Hear me interview [livejournal.com profile] lauramcewan about vidding and being a beta reader, learn about Ass Creed, listen to me, [livejournal.com profile] wook77, [livejournal.com profile] kriken, and [livejournal.com profile] midnitemaraud_r reminisce about Lumos 2006, hear how [livejournal.com profile] djin7 and [livejournal.com profile] thistlerose survive the holiday feet season, and more. :-D

Lumos CDs!

Aug. 24th, 2006 08:48 am

I got my CDs of some Lumos sessions in the mail recently, and I've been listening to them in the car during my commute. The sound quality is really good, I have to say, though in many sessions you miss out on about a third of what was said because the voices of people in the audience weren't picked up by the mics. In some cases, the people running the panel did a good job of paraphrasing those comments and repeating questions, but in other cases, you just miss out. I think the CD of the crack panel turned out particularly well, and it was a lot of fun to listen to! I made audience members come up to the mic to ask their questions and make their comments, and I'm really glad I did, because there's very little on the CD that isn't understandable.

Overall, it's so much fun to listen to these, particularly to panels I didn't get to go to. So much fandom love, I gotta say!

And... um... there doesn't seem to be a copyright on these CDs that I can see. I have five of them: the crack panel, the slash vs. het panel, "Bridging the Gap Between Scholars and Fans in a University-level HP Course", "A Critical Look at Wizarding Education", and "Educational Theory and Practice in the HP novels". I'm just sayin'...

This is seriously the only complaint I have about Lumos. No, really. I loved Lumos, and I can overlook almost everything, because the people who organized it were volunteers, and I know for a fact that they worked their asses off. There was undoubtedly plenty of shit that went on behind the scenes that none of us heard about, and they still pulled it off. Good for them.

But still? I can't let this one go. )

I had hoped that this would be a fun panel, and it was -- for me, certainly, and it seemed for everyone else. The idea for the panel came about during The Witching Hour, actually, when I was going to lots of great panels and trying to think of something that hadn't been discussed yet but would make an interesting topic. I had just started seeing the term "crack" used a lot on my flist, and I started playing with the idea of putting together a panel discussion about it.

Frankly, I was surprised that the proposal was accepted, because I thought it might be a little to "inside" a thing for such a large symposium. And maybe that's why they put us in the smallest possible room in the Marriott? But of course, at least a quarter of the people who wanted to come were turned away at the door, so we could have gone a little bigger. On the bright side, our panel didn't get any anti-slash shit from Emerson. (On second thought, that would have been fun to watch.) Yay for the recording, though -- I can't wait to get that CD in the mail!

The makeup of the panel was originally quite different, but due to people having to cancel their trips to Lumos, in the end it was [livejournal.com profile] furiosity, [livejournal.com profile] geoviki, and [livejournal.com profile] scarah2. And they were, all three of them, amazing. I can't thank them enough for doing such a great job! They were witty and thoughtful and even occasionally brilliant, which considering the topic, is pretty damn cool.

It was so much fun that I thought I'd give those of you who didn't get to go to Lumos (or those of you who did, for that matter) join in the discussion.

But It’s Just Crack! The Role of Crack Fiction and Art in Subverting and Contributing to Fanon

My opening opinion/statement on the topic )

Following that, [livejournal.com profile] scarah2 started us off by showing some examples of crack art she had drawn the night before. [livejournal.com profile] geoviki read an excerpt from Never Mind The Bollocks, It's Draco/Harry, giving it quite a poignant introduction. [livejournal.com profile] furiosity read from My Big Phat Hogwarts, and I followed that up with an excerpt from [livejournal.com profile] phaballa's The Death of a Soul, A Blowjob Beneath a Table, and the Rain of Toads That Followed. And then we all wiped our eyes, picked our asses up from the floor, and settled in for a surprisingly meaningful discussion about crack fic.

I don't think a consensus was really reached, and I didn't expect that to happen. The original idea for the panel was to put together people whom I knew would have very different opinions on crack and get them to argue with each other. And that's pretty much what happened, with great commentary from Scarah along the way! Rather than rehash the discussion here, I thought I would try to get some of y'all involved and see what you think about crack.

Crack poll! )

Please feel free to add any comments below. Let's pretend we're all still at Lumos and talking about fun things (instead of wanking about meaningless things)!

Thanks again to the panel and to everyone who attended for making it a fantastic time. And hey -- how many panels generated their own icons (courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] coffeejunkii and [livejournal.com profile] fiona_fawkes) and FANFIC (courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] mijan)? *grins*

Due to a combination of con drop (*sniffle*) and jet lag (only a 2 hour time diff, but add in the fact that I stayed up 'til 4:00 am every night and I'm basically on Hawaii time), I find myself wide awake at 3:00 am. I just spent the last hour and a half lying in bed and staring at the ceiling, and then I gave up and got up. I'm really going to regret this tomorrow, I think.

So as long as I'm awake, I think I'll write up some of my thoughts about Lumos and the impact that going to cons has had on my enjoyment of and perspective on fandom. Cut for those of you who are sick of hearing about it. )

I guess fandom is such a comfortable place for me, and going to cons like TWH and Lumos has been a really big part of that. I know that a lot of people were frustrated by the way some things were organized, and not everyone was happy with the structure of the con. I have very little to complain about, to be honest. I have some lingering frustration about the way the Night Classes went (and seriously, if I had it to do again, I wouldn't have done it at all), but otherwise I have no major complaints about Lumos. Stuff I really loved: )

I still want to make a post or two about panels, so I'm afraid you'll have to put up with a bit more Lumos-squee from me! For now, I think I'm finally getting tired enough to go to sleep. *yawns*

I need to shed a single emo tear over the end of Lumos, because seriously? Best. Con. Ever.

I had so, so much fun, and met so many amazing people, all of whose LJ names I have forgotten. Except for [livejournal.com profile] bethbethbeth, of course. *lulz*

There shall be a bigger post-mortem post later in the week when I get my thoughts together, but for now I just want to say it was fantastic to get to spend a weekend with likeminded people, for whom overheard words like "double-headed dildo" are actually an invitation to join the conversation, who are willing to sit in the common room and discuss women's sexuality in the wizarding world, and who are friendly and welcoming to everyone, no matter who or what they ship.

Happy travels to everyone who went, and I hope to make it to Prophecy and/or Sectus!

So worth blowing off work and spending a gajillion dollars on, trust me. ^.~

[livejournal.com profile] emmagrant01: [livejournal.com profile] lazy_daze and [livejournal.com profile] longleggedgit are totally making out on the bed now. There will be photos, I think.

[livejournal.com profile] goldie: It seems this is my room that everyone's partying in, yeah. So far, I've distributed a kilogram of tim tams, got at least five minors drunk and discovered that [livejournal.com profile] spurious and [livejournal.com profile] lazy_daze have very talented mouths. ....o_O. Also, [livejournal.com profile] marksykins? You shuld be here to plot logarithms with me. ♥.

[livejournal.com profile] wendy: Y'all, it's hard to type drunk...SAM! We love you! And everyone else? WE LOVE YOU TOO! Mwah! Gah , all these people rule so much, we are th eluckiest fangirls in the world! 'Scuze me...someone just handed me a drink...BYE!

[livejournal.com profile] kriken: HI! Pleasantly buzzed for Karen's birthday - no better way to be :) Lumos is amazing so far and of course the fandom people are absolutely wonderful and awesome. And just so you know, f says "come to the crack panel." Which, of course, we will all be at, because who doesn't love some crack? Wish everyone was able to come, but there's always next year, right? BYE!!

[livejournal.com profile] emmagrant01: And security just came by and said we're on the verge of getting kicked out, so the party is moving down to the jacuzzi... :-D
emmagrant01: (Lumos slots)
Passing this on from [livejournal.com profile] geoviki: regarding the Feast at Lumos:

Feast sticker colors are IN! They are Red and Blue. Make sure you tell your friends which color to select so you can be in the same room together for both feasts. Everyone will eat in the Great Hall at least once.

It would be great if as many slashers as possible could be together, so everybody pick BLUE, okay? And feel free to pass it on.
emmagrant01: (Lumos slots)
OMG just a few days until Lumos!

This is mostly for my own reference, but also here for any friends who might be looking for me -- or anyone who hasn't yet figured out what events they're going to and wants to see what I'm doing in order to avoid me. ;-) I somehow wound up on four panels in addition to teaching in the Magical Night Classes, so it's going to be a busy weekend!

If you know of any meet-ups you think I'd be interested in that I haven't mentioned in here, please let me know. There was an awesome [livejournal.com profile] pornish_pixies meet-up at TWH, but I haven't heard if there's one planned for Lumos.

Also, we'll be recording segments for [livejournal.com profile] slashcast and handing out Slashcast buttons throughout Lumos, so be sure to ask for a button from me, [livejournal.com profile] amanuensis1, [livejournal.com profile] glockgal, [livejournal.com profile] karaz, [livejournal.com profile] kerryblaze, [livejournal.com profile] longleggedgit, or Aspen ([livejournal.com profile] cursescar).

So what am I missing?  Other get-togethers?  Also, I'm not leaving until Monday afternoon. Who else is sticking around?

ETA: Very Happy Birthdays to [livejournal.com profile] wordplay (we're the same age now, mwahaha!) and [livejournal.com profile] coffeejunkii (see you soon!). Also, a very Happy First Anniversary to [livejournal.com profile] hearts_n_roses and her lovely wife!

I'm happy to announce that I have accepted the position of Arithmancy Professor at Lumos for the Hogwarts night classes on Friday night! I have some fun things planned, so if you're inclined to learn something (instead of heading to the Strip that night), please sign up for my class! :-)

I don't know how or when you sign up for classes yet, but I'll let people know when I learn more.
emmagrant01: (Lumos 2006)
In case you haven't seen this article about the ubiquitousness of slash at TWH, check it out. Specific panels and events are mentioned, including several references to [livejournal.com profile] amanuensis1's "Yes, I'm here for the slash" buttons, and one reference to [livejournal.com profile] mijan's habit of raising her wand high in the air in panels when she wanted to speak!

I registered for Lumos!!! I have a hotel room reserved!! I'm counting the days! And I had breakfast with my darling friend [livejournal.com profile] jedirita this morning and told her all sorts of juicy tales about the con. I think I've convinced her to come to Lumos!

A week ago, I was hanging out with cool people and trying to decide which awesome panels I would go to in the morning. Waah! Where's that damned time turner?
