emmagrant01: (Spock: Bitch please)

The more I think about this film, the more disappointed I am.

Here are links to great fan commentaries picking apart exactly what a clusterfuck this film is. I'll probably add to this list as I come across new ones. Feel free to suggest more!

SPOILERS, obviously:

Well... I liked it, of course, but I didn't love it. And I expected to, so...  Hmmm.

Maybe not quite the right time of year for that reference, BUT. Apparently an old fic of mine from the Star Trek fandom (The Hands-On Approach) won some awards in the Jim and Bones Rec Olympics! So exciting! There are quite a few familiar names on what looks to be a fantastic rec list for the Jim/Bones shippers out there.

And ooh, look at my lovely medals. *polishes them*

Silver in the Aliens Made Them Do It category:

Gold in the Best Use of Hand Porn category:

It's always nice to know that fics I wrote years ago in a fandom I'm not currently active in are being read and enjoyed, so thank you to whoever nominated my fic! :-)

I just spent my commute mentally working out a Zach/Benedict on-the-ST-set fic. I don't even KNOW where that came from. My brain has apparently already decided that whoever Benedict plays in the next ST film, he will be slashed with Spock. Like, without even consulting me. Just BAM, here is your new pairing. :-P

It also wants some Spock/Sherlock crossover smut. That must exist. *considers where to look for it*

My brain, it scares me sometimes.

But you know, one of the awesome things about fandom is that I know I'm not alone in this crazy descent into obsessiveness over something new and shiny. Before I found online fandom 10 years ago, this kind of thing would suck me under and I felt so alone. I had no outlet, no one I could explain the feelings to. It was crazy being trapped in my own head like that for weeks on end, the outside world a little hazy and foreign, and I both loved and hated it. Knowing that there are other people out there who get this feeling is such a tremendous relief. It keeps me afloat, it really does. And it's SO much more fun!! *snuggles fandom*

On a related note, is there some super-secret way to watch Sherlock live from North America that I just haven't figured out? Not that I mind waiting a bit to get a copy, but if there IS a way, I thought I should ask.

So this happened today. And a couple of heretofore unrelated fandoms exploded in squee.

The comments on this post are made of awesome. And the gifs! OMG the gifs!

I thought my days of dressing up for a midnight movie release were over. Apparently not! But who to ship? How can we possibly decide???
emmagrant01: (Kirk/McCoy OTP)
I owe someone a Star Trek fic, so I've been re-reading some of my favorite fics to wrap my head back around the fandom. One of my favorite tropes for Kirk/McCoy is when cadet!Kirk and cadet!McCoy go to Vegas, get wasted, and wake up naked together -- and married. What I love about that trope is the way that writers take it for granted that in the future, marriage between people of the same sex is totally normal and nothing to comment on.

This is something I really enjoy about the ST universe in general. I love that canonically slutty Kirk is assumed to be omnisexual. I love that sexual orientation is generally something considered to be a sliding scale in this futuristic world. (At least, this is true in the limited set of fics I've read, so please be gentle if you think I'm wrong!)

Anyway, in light of everything that happened in the last few days, I've been indulging in some Vegas K/M fic, and re-read one of my favorites of this trope, The One With the Romulan Ale by [livejournal.com profile] dancinbutterfly. An excerpt:

“Jesus, Jim. We got married. How fucking stupid are we?”

“I don’t know. It’s Vegas. You get impulsive. I don’t know that it’s stupid. I think we’re both too smart to be stupid.”

“We’re gonna have to get a divorce.” McCoy groans, rubbing his aching head. “I’m going to be twice divorced in two years. I’m going to be that guy — ex for each sex — like on some goddamn soap.

“We are?” Jim looks at him, a little stunned. “Why? Did I or did I not just give you the best damn head you ever had?”

I'll leave it there to encourage you to read the fic for yourself if you haven't already, but what I wanted to point out here is the bolded bit, which is probably one of my favorite lines in a fic ever. That line communicates so very much about this universe, about how things have changed from the time we live in (and also how they haven't). She says it all in that one line, and it's perfect.

I love fandom so fucking much!

Oh, and if there's an LJ comm out there dedicated to Academy years fic, could someone point me to it? TIA!
emmagrant01: (ST come see)
DH and I just finished watching our way through all of TOS on DVD. Dude, I have now seen all episodes of Original Trek. Crazy!

I was constantly amazed at the number of fic tropes I saw. I mean seriously: pon farr, bodyswap, transporter-makes-doubles, sex pollen, drunk!virus, time travel, stuck-on-ice-planets, life-or-death scenarios left and right, aliens-made-them-do-it, you name it. No wonder this series oversaw the birth of large-scale slash! XD

Now I have some writing to do. Woot!
emmagrant01: (Kirk: Pon Farr)
This post by [livejournal.com profile] sithdragn totally cracked me up. Apparently Diamond Image Toys makes a special Kirk/Spock pon farr action figure set! LOLOLOL!!

So whose idea was that, I wonder?

I think I need to get one... .>.>

Cura Te Ipsum by [livejournal.com profile] lindmere, Kirk/McCoy, NC-17.

Holy shit, but this is good writing. The characterizations, the universe-building, the details, and OMG the smoking-hot sex -- all of it is amazing. About halfway through this fic I realized this was the Kirk/McCoy fic I've been waiting to read. Gorgeous.
emmagrant01: (ST: Chair!sex)
I'm in the mood for seriously porny PWPs, preferably Kirk/McCoy, but I also like Kirk/Spock, Sulu/Chekov, and Spock/Uhura. What is the hottest, porniest thing you've read lately? Rec meeee, please!!!
emmagrant01: (baby Spock)
This is, I believe, the first piece of gen fic I have ever written. Ever. And interestingly enough, it's probably the most deeply personal fic I've ever written. Go figure.

Title: Baby Boy

Length: ~700 words

Note: Inspired by this ADORABLE portrait of Baby Spock by [livejournal.com profile] lizardspots. Information about Spock’s origins from a post I now cannot find, argh. It was a summary of the pro-fic novel Spock's World, which described Spock's origins as a literal test-tube baby. Will update with the link when I find it...

I should be getting ready for the summer school classes I am teaching, people, not writing porn. But that art! It totally did me in. I couldn't stop thinking about it. And this? Is the result. I think my students might forgive me...

Holy fucking hell. How many of my kinks does this piece of fanart hit? Like, IDK, 12???

[livejournal.com profile] cathybites, you rock!

Okay, there will probably be some fic about this one...
emmagrant01: (Kirk: Milkshake NC-17)
I've been in big-F Fandom for 7 years now (OMG), and I'm really enjoying rolling around in all the shiny new-ish-ness that is ST:XI. Not new in that the characters have been slashed by people since before I was born, but new to most of the folks on my flist who are reading and writing it after watching the film. I've never managed to come into a fandom in the beginning before (and I do consider the reboot a new beginning), and so I'm really enjoying this moment.

Some thoughts on this fandom, in no particular order. Lots of navel-gazing. )
emmagrant01: (Kirk: Pon Farr)
I have joined the 21st century and posted my Star Trek recs on del.icio.us here. I should have done that a long time ago, but I guess better late than never, eh? It looks like it's going to be super easy to keep up with.

Link me to your recs pages? :-D

Out of curiosity, I did a search on myself to see if any of my fics had been bookmarked by other people. Interestingly enough, my recent ST fics had a lot more bookmarks than my HP fics!
emmagrant01: (K/M slash)
Title: Something Like This
Author: Emma Grant
Fandom: ST XI
Pairing: Kirk/McCoy
Rating: NC-17
Length: ~1500 words
Summary: Set in the Academy years. Kirk promised McCoy he’d get him laid for his birthday. And Jim Kirk doesn’t break a promise.
Note: Written for this gorgeous piece of art by [livejournal.com profile] myrafur.

I told you, Bones, you’re gettin’ laid. Even if it takes all night. )
emmagrant01: (K/M slash)
I went to have lunch with DH today, and as soon as he got in the car he said, "Let's play hooky and go see Star Trek instead." I don't need to be asked twice! So that was awesome.

It was his first time seeing it, and he's a old-skool Trekker. Some of his thoughts here, cut in case you still need to cut for ST XI spoilers. )

Oh, I love that movie. So much.
