Star Trek, viewing #3

I went to have lunch with DH today, and as soon as he got in the car he said, "Let's play hooky and go see Star Trek instead." I don't need to be asked twice! So that was awesome.
It was his first time seeing it, and he's a old-skool Trekker.
1. He really liked the movie, and thought it was the best ST film since Khan, and was maybe even better than that one. He said it wasn't a fair comparison since the styles of the two films are so different.
2. He loved the reboot concept, though he thinks they should end the third movie by having Kirk wake up and realize it was all a dream, LOL.
3. He thought all the characterizations were good except for that of Bones, whom he thought was lacking the affability and sensitivity of Bones in TOS. He said that was an important characteristic missing from Spock and Kirk, and Bones had it to fill out the trio. I haven't thought about TOS as much as he has, but I've been rewatching and I can see his point. Though, dude, I do love me some snarky!Bones! Maybe adding Uhura to the trio to make it a foursome (mind into the gutter there, LOL) meant they could shake up McCoy's character a bit. Or maybe Urban is just awesome like that.
4. He thought the mind-meld/exposition part was lame and lazy writing. I totally agree, but I get why they chose to do it that way. When I first saw the film, I was all "Thank you, Captain Exposition" at that part. (A porny drabble to the first person who can name the source of that reference.) I wish they'd found a better way to show, rather than tell that part, but maybe it was an excuse to get Spock Prime and Kirk doing the mind meld thing? I can roll with that. ;-)
5. He thought it was funny that Starfleet Academy is on the exact site of ILM. But Starfleet was put there well before Lucas acquired the property, right?
6. When Kirk was on Delta Vega, he was whispering in my ear, "They put him on Hoth? Where are the taun-tauns"? And I was all, "LOL, just wait."
7. He was a bit eye-rolly at the overt K/S, heh. I haven't yet told him that's not who I'm shipping...
I was able to pay attention to smaller details this time (instead of just ogling the hotness of Captain Fine and Karl Urban), and I saw the tribble! I also heard Nurse Chapel addressed by McCoy, and her "Yes, Doctor" response. Is that her in the teensy white dress in the first sickbay scene? And is R2D2 really in there somewhere, or is that just a rumor?
And dude, the lens flares are seriously FIERCE. I was cracking up laughing at them by the end.
Oh, I love that movie. So much.

Date: 2009-06-11 09:44 pm (UTC)I never really watched MST, so it's not the source I was thinking of. Heh, it maybe be a little too specific.

Date: 2009-06-11 09:33 pm (UTC)Well, I know it from Animaniacs (and it was Mr Exposition), but I have a feeling that's not where you know it from.
At the rate this film is taking over my flist, I really ought to go see it.

Date: 2009-06-11 09:48 pm (UTC)As for my Mystery Science Theater guess, when I read it in your post, I totally heard it in Crow's voice in my head. I wasn't a faithful watcher, but I've seen enough. Very funny stuff!

Date: 2009-06-12 05:20 am (UTC)Captain Exposition sounds like a Buffy reference to me, but I couldn't tell you where. ^_^
Y'know, I expected to be all over Kirk/Spock myself, just because it's so classic, but I too am enamored of Spock/Uhura. Ultimately, though, I fell so hard for Sulu it wasn't even funny, so hard it actually pulled me out of my writing slump, and I am so happy about that! So far, the only thing I've written that doesn't involve Sulu is a Pike/Kirk mirror universe fic. :D
Are you watching TOS now? I've been rewatching it and just got my hands on the remastered edition, which is lots of fun. I love being into a fandom with this much canon; I could watch half a dozen episodes a day for months and not be out! I haven't been able to wallow this much in a fandom since I started watching Buffy, and I was never into the fic there, so this is all pretty glorious -- all my fandoms have been past their "golden years" by the time I got to them, so this is the first time I've been there at the ground floor. Then again, I guess you could make an argument that Trek was long past its golden years by the time XI came around... ;)

Date: 2009-06-12 03:27 pm (UTC)Starfleet isn't _quite_ in the same place as LucasArts, but yes, they're both on the Presidio.
And yes, Starfleet was on the Presidio long before Lucas moved into their current digs, which was maybe 3 years ago.

Date: 2009-06-12 10:39 pm (UTC)I don't *see* Kirk/Spock that much. I think I'm blinded by Spock/Uhura and my fanon love of Kirk/Bones.
Yeah. The lens flares are nuts.
I keep cracking up at Kirk's combat style, which feels so rebooted old Trek to me. Lots of ass and crouching. And rolling :)
Okay, suggest #2 on dream? Scares the shit out of me. EBIL. Although you know that was their fallback if this didn't make bank.
Urban is pretty damn restrained as Bones. But we're just seeing the beginning. Sooooo.... (and yes, love the snark and the roughness - guh!)
Such a beautiful flick. Just great. And everyone's catching the fever!
