Star Trek, viewing #3

I went to have lunch with DH today, and as soon as he got in the car he said, "Let's play hooky and go see Star Trek instead." I don't need to be asked twice! So that was awesome.
It was his first time seeing it, and he's a old-skool Trekker.
1. He really liked the movie, and thought it was the best ST film since Khan, and was maybe even better than that one. He said it wasn't a fair comparison since the styles of the two films are so different.
2. He loved the reboot concept, though he thinks they should end the third movie by having Kirk wake up and realize it was all a dream, LOL.
3. He thought all the characterizations were good except for that of Bones, whom he thought was lacking the affability and sensitivity of Bones in TOS. He said that was an important characteristic missing from Spock and Kirk, and Bones had it to fill out the trio. I haven't thought about TOS as much as he has, but I've been rewatching and I can see his point. Though, dude, I do love me some snarky!Bones! Maybe adding Uhura to the trio to make it a foursome (mind into the gutter there, LOL) meant they could shake up McCoy's character a bit. Or maybe Urban is just awesome like that.
4. He thought the mind-meld/exposition part was lame and lazy writing. I totally agree, but I get why they chose to do it that way. When I first saw the film, I was all "Thank you, Captain Exposition" at that part. (A porny drabble to the first person who can name the source of that reference.) I wish they'd found a better way to show, rather than tell that part, but maybe it was an excuse to get Spock Prime and Kirk doing the mind meld thing? I can roll with that. ;-)
5. He thought it was funny that Starfleet Academy is on the exact site of ILM. But Starfleet was put there well before Lucas acquired the property, right?
6. When Kirk was on Delta Vega, he was whispering in my ear, "They put him on Hoth? Where are the taun-tauns"? And I was all, "LOL, just wait."
7. He was a bit eye-rolly at the overt K/S, heh. I haven't yet told him that's not who I'm shipping...
I was able to pay attention to smaller details this time (instead of just ogling the hotness of Captain Fine and Karl Urban), and I saw the tribble! I also heard Nurse Chapel addressed by McCoy, and her "Yes, Doctor" response. Is that her in the teensy white dress in the first sickbay scene? And is R2D2 really in there somewhere, or is that just a rumor?
And dude, the lens flares are seriously FIERCE. I was cracking up laughing at them by the end.
Oh, I love that movie. So much.
