DashCon

So. Wow.

Surely by now you've heard about the surreal meltdown of the Tumblr con called DashCon in Chicago over the weekend. So I was there, along with many friends, and it was quite an experience.

I was invited to be a special guest over a year ago, and I was really flattered. TBH I might not have attended the con otherwise, because I generally enjoy smaller single-fandom cons more than big, multi-fandom things -- as this one was being marketed to be. I should note at this point that I was never offered any kind of comps. Apparently other special guests were flown out and had their rooms paid for and everything, but I was not offered any of that. I paid my own way -- which is totally fine, I should say. A couple of months ago more friends from [livejournal.com profile] threepatch decided to go, and we asked DashCon if TPP could be listed on the special guest page like the Baker Street Babes (and I) were. We were declined, something we were later grateful for.

This is gonna get long, so I'll cut. )

NOTE: I will probably continue editing and adding stuff to this post as I think about more.

So, it seems I am going to the Sherlock Convention in Seattle in a few weeks. :-D :-D :-D

Woot! Anyone else planning to go?

Passion-Lube-Barrel

If you’re going to WinCon in Dallas this weekend, [livejournal.com profile] chaeche and I will be modding a panel about lube on Saturday afternoon. Come join us for some cracky fun!

Lube Across Fandom: As anyone who’s ever ventured into the depths of ff.net knows, slash writers have extremely creative approaches to lubrication in porny fic. In this panel, we’ll discuss popular lube tropes across many fandoms, from magical lube spells to using (literally) whatever is available. Which fandom originated the concept of the self-lubing ass?  What pairings hold the record for the most bizarre substances they’ve put in each other’s butts? Come prepared to discuss your favorite ways to lube up your favorite characters in this definitely NSFW panel.

Lubricus!

emmagrant01: (Lubricus 2012)
I haven't been this sleep-deprived since I had an infant, but I'll do my best to write something about this lovely weekend.

First up, I need to thank my fellow [livejournal.com profile] lubricus concom members, who all worked so hard to bring this together. [livejournal.com profile] chaeche is our fearless leader, without whom none of this wonderfulness would be possible. Her leadership, experience, ability to delegate, and legal/business savvy were totally indispensable. [livejournal.com profile] samwise_sam gets shit done, and had fun doing it. She rocked registration, took on the craft fair with just two weeks to go, and was a continual source of fun and humor at the con. [livejournal.com profile] pennswoods helped design the look of the con last year, and we did our best to replicate everything without her there this year. She organized the art on display and set up the format for the art gallery that [livejournal.com profile] djin7 took on and totally rocked. [livejournal.com profile] treewishes had to cancel her trip to the con at the last minute, but she completely rocked as my programming co-chair. She took on the big job of scheduling panels and confirming with mods while I was out of the country in June. We missed the presence of [livejournal.com profile] springfrost this year, who is the web mistress and general artistic/web wizard of the concom. We got to see [livejournal.com profile] stupid_drawings briefly, and really appreciate her help!

Others who deserve massive thanks are:

[livejournal.com profile] tripperfunster, whose art for the program cover was fantastic, but who will likely be remembered most for her cock drawing that she literally whipped out upon arrival at the hotel, then took down to the front desk of the hotel (!) to have them make copies. Tripper was also my roomie for the con, and I think I laughed more at 2:00 am than I have in a long time!

[livejournal.com profile] dacro stepped up to help out in any way she could, always with her fantastic sense of humor. She was responsible for the hilarious quote wall, among many other things.

[livejournal.com profile] elenauial kept the con suite running, which we really appreciate! Thank you so much for all your help, and for bringing your sweet little boy along too. :-)

I spent most of the con running around and stressed out, and I didn't get to talk to many people I'd hoped to. Still, I had a blast! Here are some of my favorite memories from the con:

The cock decorating contest was a last-minute idea. The icebreaker activity was going to be run by Tree, and when she learned she couldn't come (with just days to go), we all brainstormed what to do instead. The idea of decorating penises came up, and I emailed Tripper to ask if she could draw something for us to use. We bought supplies at Michaels on Wednesday night and then let the attendees loose on the activity. I was STUNNED by the creativity everyone put into their cocks. Seriously, it was amazing! You can see the results of the cock decorating contest here. We'll be posting individual shots on Tumblr for Penis Fridays, so stay tuned for that. ;-)

Bedtime stories was an idea that came out of last year's con, and it was also a highlight. It's fun to sit around with other slash fans and hear snippets from everyone's favorite stories. We've often described Lubricus as a fandom pajama party, and that night it felt exactly like one!

I didn't have time to participate in any of the crafting, but I love the fact that crafting is a big part of this con. There was the big Craftapalooza night that started it off, and then the craft supplies remained out for the rest of the con. The paper wands people made were truly jaw-dropping, and there were so many other fantastic things produced.

I didn't have time to attend all the programming sessions I wanted to, but all the ones I went to were fantastic. As usual, Tripper's panel was a highlight. She read badfic, and it was gloriously funny. I will never be able to think about Hedwig or Flitwick quite the same way again!

The Blue Ball was a lot of fun. I dressed up as Slash Girl and [livejournal.com profile] chaeche dressed as my cohort in slash, Plot bunny. We (with help from [livejournal.com profile] dacro) wrote cracky plot bunnies on slips of paper, and during the Ball, [livejournal.com profile] chaeche hopped around, bit people, and then handed them a plot bunny. Everyone who got one was supposed to write or draw something for it, and many people did! I think we'll be posting the art for that on [livejournal.com profile] lubricus and on Tumblr. Some of the ficlets are already being posted, as I see from my flist. I still have to write mine, which was H/D with surprise daddy!kink. :-o

The Morning After breakfast and the subsequent Dead Squid panel went really well. As always, we got lots of good feedback from everyone. One thing that was very heartening to me was that most of the attendees love the HP-centric format of the con and want it to stay that way. There are lots of big HP fandom cons and there are lots of small multi-fandom slash cons, but there aren't any other small HP slash cons. It's a particular niche, and I love it. I love that we can be raunchy and porny. I love that we literally had penises all over the walls, that we even decorated our cardboard Hogwarts with cocks, that we gave away sex toys as door prizes and lube samples were in every bag. I love that this corner of the HP fandom, which unashamedly loves its porn, has a place to go.

So thanks to everyone who made the con happen, to everyone who ran a panel, led an activity or a meet-up, or who stepped up to help us clean or set up. This is absolutely a con by fans and for fans, and I'm incredibly fucking proud of that. ♥

Ascendio

Jul. 15th, 2012 09:45 pm
emmagrant01: (Default)
So, Ascendio was fantastic, and I'm really feeling nostalgic tonight. It's the end of an era, you know? If you've ever been to one of the HPEF cons, you know that it was a really unique kind of con. The cons were large and included people from across the Harry Potter fandom, and were fan-run. There are lots of small fan-run cons and big industry-run cons, but I'm not aware of any other large cons that were so focused on the fans of a single fandom and the things they create.

The Ascendio staff did a fantastic job of making sure that every subgroup of the fandom felt welcome, IMO. The programming was well-organized and scheduled in ways that made sense (props to [livejournal.com profile] femmequixotic and [livejournal.com profile] nqdonne). All of the panels I attended or participated in were fantastic, and having a slash track meant that there was almost a mini slash con inside the larger con.

There was a distinct multi-fannish feel to Ascendio (thanks in large part to [livejournal.com profile] noeon, I understand) that I haven't seen at an HP con before. People talked about the Avengers and Sherlock just as freely as HP. Though we were all clearly there because HP is our home fandom, we also celebrated the new fandoms we love and obsess over, and it was SO much fun. It was fascinating to see the shift visually through the costumes people wore. In the past, most of the cosplay tended to be HP-centric, but at this con, people wore costumes from a large variety of fandoms. I'm still amazed by the woman who wore a replica of Princess Dianna's wedding dress!

Cons are always about the people, of course, and this one felt like a reunion in a lot of ways. I roomed with [livejournal.com profile] chaeche in the Sherlock suite, which was AMAZINGLY decorated by [livejournal.com profile] pennswoods -- I think she took pictures of the room, and I'll link to those when they're posted. I got to be on panels with [livejournal.com profile] femmequixotic, [livejournal.com profile] bookshop, [livejournal.com profile] pir8fancier, [livejournal.com profile] noeon, [livejournal.com profile] starlitshore, [livejournal.com profile] sugareey, and others (I know I'm leaving people out and I'm so sorry!). I got to see friends old and new: [livejournal.com profile] drinkingcocoa, [livejournal.com profile] geoviki, [livejournal.com profile] meri_oddities, [livejournal.com profile] goseaward, [livejournal.com profile] pinkfinity, [livejournal.com profile] lampblack, [livejournal.com profile] novembersnow, [livejournal.com profile] stormwynd, [livejournal.com profile] foxestacado, [livejournal.com profile] sassy_cissa, [livejournal.com profile] potteresque_ire, [livejournal.com profile] jlh, [livejournal.com profile] gatewaygirl and and and... shit, there are faces whose LJ names I can't match up and I'm exhausted and will have to edit them in later. So sorry if I left you off!

I've always felt sadness at the end of a con, but this is the first time I've cried when saying goodbye to people. Seriously, there were so many tearful hugs this morning, and the emotion caught me by surprise. I think that everyone felt it, that feeling of it being a sort of end of an era for the HP fandom. Not that it's over or that there won't be other cons -- hello, [livejournal.com profile] lubricus is in just a few weeks! But it definitely felt like we're all scattering now, that there may not be another con like this where so many people whose home base is the HP fandom get together and celebrate our collective creativity and geekiness. I know I'll see people at [livejournal.com profile] lubricus next month and then at WinCon in October, but there's no "see you next year". And yeah, I'm a little sad about that. *sniffle*

Ascendio!

Going to Ascendio in Orlando this summer? Me too!

Here's where you can find me:

1. In the Sherlock Suite at the Portofino hotel! That's right, [livejournal.com profile] chaeche and I are hosting a Sherlock suite. Look for more information about the location on [livejournal.com profile] ascendiolock and on the message boards at the con.

2. On Friday afternoon, I should be on a panel called How Fandom has Shaped Social Media Spaces (and Vice Versa), organized by [livejournal.com profile] pinkfinity. I say should because I'm flying in on Friday and if my flight is delayed I may not make it.

3. On Friday night there will be a Sherlock meet-up from 7-8. Stay tuned to [livejournal.com profile] ascendiolock for more information!

4. On Saturday afternoon, I'll be on a panel organized by [livejournal.com profile] femmequixotic with [livejournal.com profile] pir8fancier, [livejournal.com profile] noeon, [livejournal.com profile] starlitshore called Slash Dragons and Bromances: The Queering of Modern Media. We're talking about lots of fandoms, I think, so this should be very cool!

5. On Saturday night, [livejournal.com profile] noeon and I are running a panel called Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Writing Sex Scenes* (But Were Afraid to Ask). We have a lot of fun topics for discussion planned and it will be two hours of NSFW fun. Come and enjoy!

6: At some point there will be a Harry/Draco meet-up, and I hope to be there. As soon as I find out when and where it is!

This will be my first overnight trip away from my son, and I'm SO looking forward to it! I've taken him (and a husband or babysitter) to four cons, and I'm seriously ready to go to one and not have to worry about anyone but myself. I may not sleep. And I will drink A LOT. :-D

Also, [livejournal.com profile] chaeche and I will be hosting a Sherlock suite at Ascendio! [livejournal.com profile] pennswoods has plans to help us turn it into 221B, so it should be a fantastic hangout spot for Sherlock fans at the con. Friend/join the comm for more info on Sherlockian activities that are being planned for those of us who'll be there to slash in many fandoms. :-D

Even if you can't come to [livejournal.com profile] lubricus this summer, you can help us make it fun and support our slashing! We have two fundraisers going on this spring: the awesome HP Slash Colouring/Book and the SOS Auction, in which you can offer and bid on cool things.

See this post for more information and links to both projects.

Also, new [livejournal.com profile] slashcast coming Thursday!

Caahhhnnn!

Con Drop sucks. *sigh*

[livejournal.com profile] lubricus2011 was AWESOME!! It was one of the best cons I've ever been involved with, and it was SO much fun! I got to see old friends again, meet new ones, and hang out with slashers pretty much constantly, and seriously, what is better than that? :-D

Here are just a few examples of the awesomeness that occurred at Lubricus. )

Anyway, tl;dr summary: Lubricus was AWESOME!!!

Attendees, be sure to check out the friending post (which is flocked) on [livejournal.com profile] lubricus2011.

My son fell asleep in the car on the way home from the airport, and I think I'm going to go join him now...

Is anyone thinking of going to Aeternitas in New Hampshire next spring? I'm really intrigued by the idea of a small con that fills an entire hotel, heh -- no Muggles! And it's even in a place that has a chance of being cool enough that you could run around in house robes and not risk heat stroke!

But I would only go if a bunch of people I know (read: slashers) are going too. Registration opens in about a week, and it's limited to 475 people. I'll probably go ahead and register anyway, because it's cheap ($90). The rooms are cheap too. Actually, the whole thing looks fairly reasonable, comparatively speaking. (I may even try to organize that Slashers' Common Room...)

I guess this is a sort of informal poll to see who is thinking about registering. Who's in?

Please feel free to pass this on to others who might be interested, even if you aren't!
emmagrant01: (Default)
So, Infinitus is over. I'm hanging out in my hotel room in Orlando. BG is watching "Bob the Builder" on his little DVD player, hopefully about to be lulled to sleep by talking construction equipment. I've had some time to reflect on the last few days; aided by a morning of explaining the concept of slash to BG's nanny (who came along to hang out with him by the hotel pool while I did con stuff), and I'm going to try to write something coherent about it here.

This was my sixth Harry Potter con, and I can't help but wonder if it will be my last. )

Overall, I had fun. I'm just not sure it's how I will have my fandom fun in the future. I'd love to hear others' perspectives on Infinitus!

Oh, and I now have a fannish FB, for those who are so inclined. You can find it via my email address, emmagrant01 at gmail. :-)

I can't believe I managed to attend TWO cons this year. I doubted I'd make it to even one, considering that I have a small baby. But my wonderful husband decided to come along and hang out in the hotel room and take care of BG, and that made it possible for me to attend quite a few con events.

It wasn't the same as it used to be, of course -- no late nights (no nights at all, really), no drunken pool parties, no hanging out with people for hours on end and drabbling, drawbling or just plain talking fandom. I don't think I got my registration fee's worth, but it was still great to see friends.

On to the con )

Terminus!

Just came back from the H/D meetup, which was made of awesome. And the con still hasn't even started! BG did really well at the meetup, and was sweet and smiley. He's a pretty easygoing little dude these days, which is nice.

[livejournal.com profile] nqdonne and I are giving out Azkatraz goodies while we are here, including what's under the cut. If you're at the con, just ask one of us for one!

Check it out... )

Thanks to the sheer wonderfulness of MDH, who is quite possibly the best hubby ever, I AM GOING TO TERMINUS! OMG!!

Portus!

Jul. 13th, 2008 09:51 pm
emmagrant01: (Portus)
I just got back from Portus today. This was my fourth HP con (fifth if you count Wrockstock, which... I don't), and it was a very different experience from the other three.

This was mostly because I took my baby with me: In the past, going to cons has been an experience of completely immersing myself in fandom for several days, but I couldn't do that this time. Having BG with me meant that I was a mom first and a fandomer second, and that changed the experience for me in an interesting way. I was always watching the clock or waiting for Mr. Grant to call me to say BG was hungry again. I had to be ready to leave a panel or an event at a moment's notice, and many things I could only attend half of. (And wouldn't you know this would be the weekend that BG would decide he didn't want a bottle? If it wasn't The Boobie, he was Not Interested. And alas, Mr. Grant does not possess said Boobie.)

So I experienced the con in bits and pieces. )
