You know, I'm generally an upbeat, optimistic sort of person. But sometimes, a nice little dose of snarky pessimism hits the spot, especially when you're frustrated by something in life that just isn't fair and is out of your control. At moments like that, I really like to turn to the helpful products of despair.com. For example:

And I really love the fact that this is the thanks you get for buying something from them. *snerk*

My top five guilty pleasures, as seen on everyone else's LJ...

1. Spending a rainy weekend day curled up with my cat, my laptop, and a cup of coffee, completely blowing off any housework that needs to be done. If MDH is in town, bonus points for when we do this together, legs interwined under a shared blanket on the sofa, each with our own laptop. *happy sigh*

2. Those little frozen cream puffs from Costco. ZOMG those are the Best Evah! I have been known to fight the crowds at Costco and wait in the huge checkout line, just buy a box of those (and nothing else). Mmmm...

3. Watching cheesy comedy films. I know they're full of lowbrow humor, are plotness, brainless, and so on, but sometimes that's entertaining. I watched The Dukes of Hazzard last night, and my expectations for it were appropriately low -- so I wasn't disappointed. Sometimes mindless fun is good, you know?

4. Gay porn. 'Nuff said.

5. Fandom. I think this is probably true for everyone on my flist, but it still needs to be said!

This post is way overdue, and for that I apologize.

I got holiday cards from [livejournal.com profile] mayflo (what an adorable little H/D drawing!), [livejournal.com profile] sioniann (I loved the drabble!), [livejournal.com profile] lauren_b, Cori, [livejournal.com profile] taradiane, and [livejournal.com profile] prestonsbarr. Thanks to all of you! I never managed to get holiday cards done this year. Maybe I'll do valentines instead?

Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] wordplay for the awesome Kinky Friedman t-shirt!! OMG!!! *grins*

And as an extra surprise, I received the CD of the STG soundtrack created by [livejournal.com profile] princesskariboo and [livejournal.com profile] evilimp! Thank you so much!

Approximately three years ago, I posted my first slash fic, The Moonflower Festival, to the Master-Apprentice Yahoo group. That was definitely a milestone in my fandom life, but I'm also coming up on the third anniversary of this LJ. I got an invite from [livejournal.com profile] helens78 and made my first post on Christmas day, 2002. My second post was about the feedback I was getting for that fic and contains a comment about how it was pretty obvious what my favorite kink was. *grins*

That was the start of this voyage I still find myself on, and it's been SO much fun! I've met so many wonderful people, people whom I would not have gotten to know otherwise and who have become great friends. Sometime in the last week, this LJ passed 1500 watchers, which is pretty amazing to me. I don't think I'm that interesting! :-P

To celebrate this anniversary, I'm going to re-read that fic -- and try not to cringe too much, heh. If anyone else is interested, here's where you can find it:

Thanks to everyone for making these last three years a hell of a ride!

I love your writing and admire you immensely as a person. I consider myself very lucky to have been able to meet you and hang out with you, and I look forward to doing it again! (Lumos, yes?) Hope you have a great day!
emmagrant01: (A cutie)
I had a great meetup last Saturday with a bunch of HP folks I hadn't met before, and we had a blast! There was [livejournal.com profile] lazy_daze (whom I've been wanting to meet for a while and will see again at Lumos, yay!), her roommate [livejournal.com profile] baleheadbabe (who was lots of fun and is also going to Lumos), [livejournal.com profile] raelinschaos (who was so sweet and funny), [livejournal.com profile] son_of_darkness (who was completely adorable), [livejournal.com profile] nightwish_fan (who was the first to arrive and told me my accent was cute, hee), [livejournal.com profile] ias (whom I'd been hoping to have a chance to meet for a while and with whom I chatted about all sorts of academicky stuff), [livejournal.com profile] lizardspots (whom you all know is a fantastic artist but is also an incredibly sweet and lovely person), [livejournal.com profile] pitchblackrose (who joined us a little late and wow, is from Iceland!), and [livejournal.com profile] dora_the_nymph (very nice and sweet). Ack, I hope I haven't forgotten anyone!

We drank coffee and talked and laughed, and Lizard drew a stunning Harry/Cedric pic (that I am writing a fic for, stay tuned) and generally frightened the people around us. It was so much fun to meet you all! *massive hugs*

Oh, and from scanning their LJs I see they all continued to have lots of fun that day! *grins* I'm a bit jealous -- I would have loved to hang out longer, but alas, we had made plans. FWIW, that night I got to see MDH's very upper class boss get extremely drunk at a restaurant and begin making rude comments to women with boob jobs. 0_o

And Sunday in the Park with George was AWESOME, [livejournal.com profile] ias!
emmagrant01: (A cutie)
Wow, my weeks have revolved around Wednesdays for eight months, so today feels weird. However, [livejournal.com profile] smut_wednesday really helps! ;-)

Anyone in or around London want to have breakfast or coffee with me on the morning of Saturday, November 26? :-D
emmagrant01: (A cutie)
I feel selfish for even posting this, but hell -- wouldn't you want to shout about it to the world?

Thanks to everyone who contributed to THIS! It means so, so much -- more than I can express. :-D
emmagrant01: (gay marriage)
From a local TV station's web site:

+++
The results are in from Tuesday night's election, and Proposition Two passed. Effective immediately, the Texas Constiution will now define marriage as a union between one man and one woman.

Proposition Two passed by a huge margin. However, the majority of voters in Travis County voted against the amendement [sic]. [I ♥ Austin so FUCKING much!]

Here's a look at a breakdown of the numbers: 76 percent voted for Proposition Two, and 24 percent voted against.

As you can imagine Tuesday night, both sides of the issue had a lot to say.

"Ninety percent of the young people have voted against this amendment. That shows me that we got our message out," Anne Wynne with No Nonsense in November said. [Things are changing. We may have to wait for the bigots to die, but...]

"I don't know if God has spoken, but I know that when Glen Maxey says something that God is not involved in this type of issue or does not address this issue, he really clearly has about 8,000 years ago," David Contreras, Justice at the Gate, said. [Okay, what? I'm still not sure what he was trying to say. Separation of church and state mean anything to you, asshat? Oh, and Glen Maxey rocks. SO much.]
+++

*sigh*
emmagrant01: (shattered)
Okay, this day so officially SUCKS now.

Majority of Texans, I hate you. You are intolerant, hateful, ignorant bigots. The fact that you hide behind religion and cutesy children's drawings of heterosexual people holding hands does not make it less true.

*sobs*
emmagrant01: (STG)
So, I sent the last part of STG to the betas just now.

Cut for emo, wibbling, nostalgic Emma -- lalala, move along, nothing to see... )

In the meantime, I ♥ all of you so, so much. Thank you for making this experience so amazing!

Wireless at the airport is like, teh greatest thing evah, I swear. I actually enjoy having long layovers now. Gives me a chance to check LJ. :-D

There's so much negativeness going around, and I thought I would just pause to let people know what my LJ is here for.

  1. Fandom: It's my hobby, not my life, so it should be fun. When it's not fun, I take a break or heavily filter my f-list.
  2. Porn: Reading it, writing it, looking at it, talking about it, etc. This is what the internet is for, right? ;-)
  3. Politics: Occasional, depending on what's going on. I often post my own thought on issues and links to things I find interesting.
  4. People: Connecting with new friends from around the world.

What this journal is NOT for:

  1. Causing, encouraging, or participating in wank.
  2. Hurting or saying mean things about other people, anonymously or not.
  3. Being negative about people, fandom, certain fics, etc.
  4. Pretending like being in fandom is a popularity contest. *eye roll* I'm 34 years old, and I left junior high and its politics behind a LONG time ago. I have no desire to go back.

So that's me. I'm just sayin'.
emmagrant01: (Draco beautiful)
So, you know that "Ten nasty things I'd love to say" meme that was going around a few days ago? I didn't read any of them, because I swore off wank a while back. And it just isn't worth the energy to try to figure out if any of those statements were intended for me. If someone hates me, fine. It doesn't really matter in the scheme of things, you know?

Instead, here are ten positive things I'd love to say about people. )

Feel free to pass this one on. ♥ all of you.
emmagrant01: (embarrassed)
Why does my gmail notifier tell me I have -2 new emails? What, -2 (mod 11)? Does it know I like math, or something?

I have a new bumper sticker on my car, purchased from http://www.unemployeddemocrats.com/. So much good stuff there! My husband has started teasing me that I'll never be on a jury now. Heh.

Some thoughts about gay porn, cut for obvious reasons. )

And on a completely different note, I'm meeting [livejournal.com profile] charlotteschaos for sushi tonight! Woohoo! Sushi for slashers!
emmagrant01: (hand of glory)
So I'm watching Red Dawn on TV. I remember seeing that film in the theater when I was about twelve, and the thing I remember about it back then was that in my kid mind, it seemed so real, like something that could really happen.

And watching it now, it looks like the fucking stupidest movie ever made. Hello, the Russians (okay, Cubans, but later the Russians) would invade a one-horse town in the middle of nowhere Wyoming, by air drop? The sheer amount of right-wing fear-mongering propaganda in this film is mind-boggling. We have to have our guns, or we can't protect ourselves from the enemy! You have to know how to kill and butcher animals, just in case you need to survive in the woods when they come for you! You should be hard on your boys -- how else will they know what it means to be men? You have to cloister and protect your daughters, or they'll be raped, or worse. And for God's sake, men don't cry!!

The dialogue is terrible, and the acting not much better. At least it's slashy. Heh. Patrick Swayze/Tom Howell OTP!!!

But you know what scares me about this? When this film came out, I really believed that shit was possible -- even likely. I was completely brainwashed. And you know, it's not that different from what's happening now, is it?

ETA: Oh, look! It's the scene where the Russians line up a bunch of American prisoners by a mass grave and shoot them while they sing America, the Beautiful! Those nasty Russians! *eye roll* "No crying!" Patrick Swayze says! "Hold it back!"

ETA 2: And the illegal aliens from Latin America were part of the evil plan!!! And no one is on our side but England! Those damn wussy French.

Hang on a sec -- that sounds kind of familiar, doesn't it? Hmmm...
emmagrant01: (Default)
When it comes to betas, I am so, so lucky. Some really amazing, thoughtful, and dedicated people have torn my fics to shreds over the last three years and pointed me in the right direction. Betaing for me can be hard work, and I want these folks to know how much I appreciate them!

So many people I had to cut! )

THANK YOU ALL!!!
emmagrant01: (Luna little)
Oh, con drop is depressing, isn't it? I had such a good time at TWH, more fun than I even expected to have. It was great to be surrounded by fen for days, and the thought of going back to the real world is… blech. No! I want to pretend I'm at Hogwarts for another week, please!

I met so many amazing people, and that deserves another post. For now, here's what I did, in case you're interested. :-)

Thursday )

Friday )

Saturday )

Sunday )

ETA: Check out the [livejournal.com profile] _witchinghour_ LJ for newsletters and pictures from TWH!

On posting photos: Lots of people took pictures at TWH and I know I showed up in them -- and I have a big favor to ask. I'd rather photos in which I'm clearly identified not be posted publicly. Under a lock is fine, but I just don't want to be so easily identifiable in a public space. With the new Blog search engines, it's hard to keep entries from being publicly available and easily searchable. Sorry to be a stick-in-the-mud about that, but I'm in the closet as a slasher, and I kinda want to keep it that way... Thanks in advance! :-)

So, Lumos! I'm planning to go. I've been asked to speak on a panel, and I'm thinking about submitting a proposal for a panel as well. I think it would be another fantastic weekend, and all in one hotel this time!
emmagrant01: (against a wall)
Happy Birthday to [livejournal.com profile] anise_anise!

I wish I had a better present for you, but all I have to offer is the entry I wrote for you for the [livejournal.com profile] hd_directory here. And the formatting is a little weird, but they promised they would fix it...

*hugs and snogs, repeatedly*
emmagrant01: (pissed off)
What the FUCK?????

I have no words. I don't know what to say. Because this bill would affect ME if I lived in that state. My 15-year-old unmarried cousin can accidentally get pregnant and have a baby no problem, but *I* would be required to get some sort of certification (possibly including a check of whether I go to church or not??) before I qualify for medical assistance to get pregnant???

Fuck you, fuckers. FUCK YOU.

That link goes to [livejournal.com profile] elke_tanzer's very informative post on the subject, with lots of links to related stories.

ETA: [livejournal.com profile] belleweather has more horrifying details here.

Salem!!

I'm really excited about The Witching Hour! It will be so much fun to see/meet other slashers. :-D

I'm currently scheduled to get in really late Thursday night, but I'm going to try my damnedest to get a earlier flight. I've managed to get off work on Thursday, and my plan is to go to the airport first thing in the morning and try to get on an earlier flight. If all goes well, I should get to Boston by 4:00 or so.

I'm staying at the Sheraton, and I know a bunch of other folks are too -- but how are we going to find each other? Is there a get-together or something going on on Thursday night that I could come and crash if I get there early enough?

Don't forget to come to the Harry/Draco round table discussion on Saturday afternoon!
