Okay, this day so officially SUCKS now.

Majority of Texans, I hate you. You are intolerant, hateful, ignorant bigots. The fact that you hide behind religion and cutesy children's drawings of heterosexual people holding hands does not make it less true.

And the mayor of Houston had the balls to just get on TV and say the city voted with "compassion and integrety."

*empathizes* One of the hardest things about moving back to Georgia from Massachusetts, in spite of all the things I love and missed desperately about the South, was knowing that I was leaving a state that began performing legal same-sex marriages at just about the same time as my home state passed an constitutional amendment against it. It's always been hard to be a liberal in rural Georgia, but never so much as it is now, under this adminstration.

I figured it would pass, bah. It's Texas... I didn't really expect much. In Ohio the anti-gay marriage amendment ended up making the domestic violence laws unconstitutional. I wonder what'll happen with this thing.

If anything, we can always hope Tom Delay goes to prison for a long, long time.

I really REALLY don't understand what gives someone the right to dictate something like that...i mean, if you're comfortable in your own marriage and enjoy it, why wouldn't you want the same thing for everyone, no matter what their preference?! It makes me sad. It'll be a long long time before same-sex marriage is legalised in australia i think...it wasn't that long ago that homosexuality was illegal in one of our states :/

As an outsider, but living in a country with white christian leaders determined to drag us in the US's footsteps instead of taking it's direction from mature, morally enlightened and socially responsible nations, I'm crying for you all.

We're currently facing laws that will strip away human rights that have been inherent in our legal system since our federation. We've already had marriage declared as a possession of the christian church here, instead of the state, which it should be.

Racism, fear, terrorism, intollerance and stupidity are becoming prevalent, and any steps we were taking towards social maturity have been eroded.

I mean, do they honestly think that gay marriage will somehow undermine all that is good in the world? Wrong answer. I feel your pain, my friend. Here in Utah, a constitutional amendment was passed for tradtional marriage only PLUS nothing that resembles a civil union qualifies for any type of right that resembles marriage. This little bit of idiocy has caused common law marriages to be non-existent. The first use of the law was to revoke a protective order for a woman who had gotten the protection based upon her common law marriage status.

Why is it so hard for people to make rights available in society available to EVERYONE in society? I'm a big believer of equal rights for all, no matter what color, race, gender, lifestyle choice, etc. etc. etc. I don't understand why this is so scary to other people.

Date: 2005-11-09 05:13 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] emmagrant01.livejournal.com
That's true here as well. This pretty much demolishes common law marriages for straight people, eliminates partner benefits, and all other manner of evils. And people voted for that. They voted to HURT people.

I just don't understand.

I don't hate those texans, but i seriously think it just goes back to teaching the wrong aspect of things in our childhood. teach tolerance. teach love. teach people that respect for the choices of others is essential. We may not like it, but WE AREN'T DOING IT ARE WE? Homosexuality is not a choice, and marriage is a right that should be assured to all people. I pray that this will die, like the hate of interracial marriage. DID YOU ALL LEARN NOTHING FROM "TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD"?
