I'm sorry. I wish this country would stop moving backwards and start moving forward. I wish people would just be happy and stop trying to force their beliefs on everyone else. I hate that I live in a conservative society where we can not even look past the end of our noses to see the bigger picture.

Hi,
I usally lurk your journal because I love your writing. I never comment because I'm weird and shy, but anyways things like this get me so riled up. It amazes me that a country who prides itself on being the land of the free can pass laws that just seem mean spirited and restrict the rights of other people. Why do we care what other people do behind closed doors? I don't understand why a country like Spain, with all that Catholic influence,can legalize same sex marriage while our country tries to make it impossible. Being from the Bay Area I have been lucky enough to not have experienced as much ickiness being from a kind of liberal bubble. Hopefully in the future we can reverse all the damage that is being done right now.

Right there with you. I went out of my way to vote today and look how much good it did.

You know what, though, I think a lot of it was that people didn't know they were voting on that today. I have a nice large group of friends here in Houston that are all for homosexual marriage and I was the only one that knew about it. I got this little pamphlet in the mail and I happened to look at it and saw that it was coming, so I told everyone, but if I had just thrown it away (like I usually do with pamphlets addressed to 'resident'), then none of them would have known, either.

...And there goes my good mood :( My college is in Lancaster, PA, also known as the heart of Pennsyltucky, and the Dems just scored a major victory by voting out the Republican bastard that's been in office for the past twenty years. It was a clean sweep - Democrats in every position from mayor to council to school board - and I've been flying high all night, thinking all our efforts had finally paid off. However, you've just reminded me of the awful situation in the rest of the country. *sigh* One step forward, two steps back.

Don't give up, though! If liberals can be elected in Pennsyltucky, there's still hope for the rest of this backwards, fucked-up nation to pull its head out of its ass!

I honestly don't think that it's a majority of Texans. It was just a majority of Texans that vote. The Right has done one thing very well and that is energize its grassroots supporters. Most liberals are laidback people, stereotypical but true. They don't vote in these "in between" elections.

I'd like to see the Democrats do the same thing. Then, stupid shit like this wouldn't get passed. I'm not saying Democrats are perfect because they're not. They're the lesser of two evils and its time they got their asses in gear.

I'd love to see a gay couple challenge this the whole way up to the Supreme Court.

Now I haven't read through all of the comments, but didn't Texas vote to ban ALL marriages?

HJR6 states:

"(b) This state or a political subdivision of this state may

I might have somewhat different political views than you, dear, but I certainly understand what it feels like to be forced into a bad political situation because of bigots that vote.

I am not for gay marriage, but neither am I fully against, if that makes sense.

I am right-wing - but right-wing semi-liberal, not right-wing conservative, and they've won the latest election and things seem pretty badly here.

well.. maybe you already know it, maybe it enrages you even more, and maybe it cheers you up a little :\

01) Being gay is not natural.
Real Americans always reject unnatural things like eyeglasses, polyester, and air conditioning.

02) Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall.

03) Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract.

04) Straight marriage has been around a long time and hasn't changed at all; women are still property, blacks still can't marry whites, and divorce is still illegal.

05) Straight marriage will be less meaningful if gay marriage were allowed; the sanctity of Britany Spears' 55-hour just-for-fun marriage would be destroyed.

06) Straight marriages are valid because they produce children. Gay couples, infertile couples, and old people shouldn't be allowed to marry because our orphanages aren't full yet, and the world needs more children.

07) Obviously gay parents will raise gay children, since straight parents only raise straight children.

08) Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire country. That's why we have only one religion in America.

09) Children can never succeed without a male and a female role model at home. That's why we as a society expressly forbid single parents to raise children.

10) Gay marriage will change the foundation of society; we could never adapt to new social norms. Just like we haven't adapted to cars, the service-sector economy, or longer life spans.


keep in mind that there are countries out there, that allow gay marriage.. and hope for the next generation and that dumbness is not necessarily heritable :\

I saw that on my MSN alerts and wanted to cry. I didn't think it'd pass, but I hoped that people would see that it's not just banning same-sex marriage. It invalidates common law marriages and any union that the legislature decides doesn't qualify as a "marriage." It's going to mean a lot of negative consequences--even for the people that voted for it--and as it's a proposal to ammend the state constitution, it won't go away quickly. Argh! *tears hair out*

I love Texas. I love many Texans. I do not love this kind of shit.

*sighs* I was hoping for some good news this morning. I had to listen to my father make homophobic statements yesterday after a trip to the zoo as it was. (He's an ex-Marine and he's from Texas/Oklahoma...go figure.)

Here's the sad facts though. I'm bisexual, well more pansexual seeing as I don't consider myself male or female really (more female than male, but really a mixture of the two). No, he doesn't know, but he's going to find out someday why I am not very open with him and why I can't stand for him to make such statements. It was all I could do to not cry in the car ride on the way home. And I'm almost 25 with a child of my own now. I've never been able to come out to my parents and it has caused a lot of problems as I actively avoided dating women for fear of being disowned. I've tried too hard to be 100% straight and it's getting to a bad point now. At least I'm with someone who understands (he's bi too and my dad would kill him if he found out).

At any rate, I understand the mentality in Texas. I don't like it and I just can't figure out why it exists, but I understand it. I was raised with it and it really hurts to be on the receiving end of the hatred.

I voted yesterday. So did my friend in Austin. She said it's especially discouraging for her since Austin is generally very liberal and yet it's pocketed in this spectacularly conservative state. Both of us knew it was futile but we at least attempted to make our voices heard. I really don't understand how people can tell other working, tax paying citizens, um sorry no, can't get married, you have the butt sex, piss off. I don't understand what business it is of people what goes on behind closed doors in someones house.
