In case any of you HP fans out there missed it, Kevin Smith's Smodcast did an episode devoted to Deathly Hallows Part 2 (it's episode 180 here), and OMG -- it's freaking hilarious!

It's basically Kevin and his friend Scott Mosier going scene by scene through the movie and riffing on everything. They seem to be stoned, which makes it even better. Though they get a lot of canon details wrong (you'll want to correct them a lot, but just go with it) and keep doing this annoying Russell Brand accent when trying to sound British, it's a crazy funny listen.

There is an astonishing amount of slash and adult-oriented content in the podcast, I have to say. Kevin Smith is just cool that way, but I almost lost it in the grocery store listening to this. Here are a few spoilers/enticements... )

Anyway, I recommend it! :-D

I saw Deathly Hallows Part 2 twice in the first 14 hours of release. I thought I'd be super emotional throughout it, but I wasn't. I came prepared with tissues, but I just got a little teary here and there, and didn't really cry at all. That didn't change on the second viewing, though there were extenuating circumstances. (See below.)

I tried to remember all the stuff I wanted to comment on, but I know there are lots of things I forgot. I may come back and edit. I'm not expecting anyone to read this, really. It's mostly for my own reference, and it's insanely long. :-)

Scene-by-scene thoughts. Spoilers herein, obviously. )

At the second viewing, I sat next to the asshole from hell, OMG. )

And now I think I'll go read what other people thought. :-)

In a little over three hours, I'm meeting [livejournal.com profile] stargategirl82 for a pre-movie drink, and then we're going to get in line to see Deathly Hallows at midnight. I'm beyond excited -- I'm feeling queasy! There are so many things I'm looking forward to. I've remained relatively unspoiled, and I look forward to being surprised as well. I've been saving all the cool behind-the-scenes stuff for after seeing it, because that just seemed more appropriate somehow.

I know the "popular" fandom opinion is not to care about the movies, because this story is about the books. I know there are plenty of people out there who will see the movie and post lengthy criticisms of it because it's not ever going to live up to the book for them. And there are people in this fandom who are rolling their eyes at all the excitement over this movie, who will say they just don't care.

But you know what? I care. I so flipping CARE. I came to this fandom because of the movies. I saw the first one and loved it and decided that maybe I would give these kids' books a try after all. I didn't actually start reading them until after the second movie, right before OOTP was released, but I had already started reading fanfic before I ever read the books, just because I enjoyed the movies that much. (Harry/Ron led very quickly to Harry/Draco, of course.) And when July 21, 2007 rolled around and I closed the book (after ripping out the Epilogue), I fucking CLUNG to the fact that there were a few more movies left. It was something to look forward to in this fandom that had come to mean so, so much to me.

So yeah, I love the DH movies. I love that they're interpretations of the books, that they condense the stories and add twists that weren't in canon. (I didn't actually like the book of OOTP very much until I saw the movie version -- after that I could read it without wanting to strangle Harry.) I love that some of the characters (like Draco and Snape) were softened considerably for the films, and I've personally enjoyed the fanfic that has resulted directly from that. I love that the movies are NOT the books and that they add to the HP universe anyway. I love them for many of the same reasons that I love fanfic and fanart.

So I know I'm going to love this movie tonight. I'm going to love every minute of it. I'm going to be full of squee and sleep-deprived when I see it again tomorrow with [livejournal.com profile] pennswoods, [livejournal.com profile] charlotteschaos, and [livejournal.com profile] phaballa (why yes, it is indeed a [livejournal.com profile] slashcast/[livejournal.com profile] snapecast movie watching meet-up!), and I know I'll cry just as hard the second time. Maybe more.

And I'm probably going to skip the posts hating on it, because this movie is going to be LOVE for me. Pure love. ♥

I'm going to see the movie at midnight on Thursday night and then again on Friday early afternoon, with two different groups of Austin-area folks. Is there anyone who hasn't made plans yet who'd like to join us for either/both showing? Comment and I'll email you the details!

I am SO not ready for the last film. I'm just not. I'm watching the extended versions being played on ABC Family here in the US, and I feel gutted right now. It's a really similar feeling to what I felt almost exactly 4 years ago. I knew then that the last film was a long way away, and it gave me something to cling to. I can't believe this is going to be it. *sniffles*

Everyone is reccing this, but in case you haven't seen it yet, you have to: The entire HP story in comic form. I cried at the end of that too.

Here, have a bit of fandom nostalgia.

EDIT: OMG THIS!!! IS SO GODDAMN BRILLIANT!! Watch now!!! It totally cheered me up! :-D
