I still haven't quite figured out what attracts me to a fandom. It's fairly unpredictable. I thought for sure I'd fall head over heels for The Avengers, but... I didn't. I enjoyed the movie, but I didn't come out of it desperate for more or wanting to ship anyone. My Tumblr dash is all Avengers all the time now, and it's a bit sad that I don't feel it too. I can enjoy the gifsets and such, but I don't feel compelled to read any of the recs that are popping up everywhere. I somehow just don't care that much about those characters.

I feel like it's blasphemy to say it, but there it is. The fannish bug just didn't bite me for that one. :-P

Same here! I love all the gifsets and chibi Avenger arts though.

ALSO BRUCE BANNER IS MY SPIRIT ANIMAL

I guess I am a little fannish? I don't usually capslock if unfannish. Don't care about fic or shipping though.

So far I'm with you. I got nuthin. I really like Tony Stark, mostly because I am a fan of Robert Downey Jr, but I've seen the two Iron Mans and didn't want to ship him with anyone. I do see the angst attraction to Loki, in the new movie. I haven't seen Thor, though, so he could be a total asshat in that, for all I know.

I saw Thor this week, after seeing the Avengers, and I adore Loki in that one. I think that in Thor he's portrayed as more of a trickster than a villain.

I loved Avengers! I came out of the theatre shipping Thor/Loki really hard, and I'm now trying to catch up with the other Avengers' movies, I love the gifsets and art, and have read some fic (Thor/Loki only), but I wouldn't exactly call it my new fandom. Not by a long shot.

I thought I'd feel a little fannish about it, but I kind of felt nothing, and that was a surprise to me. There are lots of fandoms I will happily read fic in even if I'll never write it myself, but I really feel utterly uncompelled to go looking for fic. The movie was enough, and that is SO not what I expected!

I think it's easier to get into the fandom if you've already watched all the films and are more invested in the characters but I feel the same way about Avengers as you do... it's shiny, I see the appeal but I'm pretty ambivalent.

This! Trying to look at the movie objectively, I don't think it would have had me diving for fic/art/etc. if I didn't already know a lot of background on the characters and therefore could theorize on the driving force behind their actions - especially for my OTP, Tony/Steve, which is so huge and blatant in the comics but has only the littlest bit of pre-slash connotations in the movie.

But I think we've talked about how BBC Sherlock was the same for me - loved the episodes, but no fannish inclination! It's so weird, especially when you just expect it to happen based on friends' reactions.

Funnily enough I went into the movie halfheartedly, just because [livejournal.com profile] noeon and [livejournal.com profile] bethbethbeth wanted to go see it. I am MEH about superhero movies and hadn't watched any of the previous movies building up to it.

And now I've seen The Avengers 3 times in the theater and twice in a downloaded cam version, I've watched Thor twice, Iron Man twice, Iron Man II and Captain America once each and I'm settling down this afternoon to watch the Hulk movie, which OMGWTF. *scratches head in confusion* I don't like superheroes! I don't like comic books! And yet now I'm reading the comics addictively, LOL, after years of mocking my brother and sister for their comics addiction. *hides face* We won't even mention the myriad sexual positions I've managed to put my Thor, Loki--LOKI!!!! <3 <3 <3 <3--and Iron Man figures in so far. *looks shifty*

I haven't fallen this hard for a fandom since HP, and I totally, totally did not expect it. Fandom's a funny thing, really. Sherlock did nothing for me fannishly, even though so many of my friends fell into it headfirst and even though I loved the first season, and that made me ridiculously sad. And then this crazy, insane comic book fandom that I would never have thought would have caught my interest in the slightest has totally consumed me and made me fall in love with my fannish side all over again. I'd forgotten how much utter joy squee brings with it... :D

I kind of figured it wasn't going to get me, because rather than having my bulletproof pairing kink of "two guys who are equally strong in completely different ways", it's an ensemble thing. But it's fun seeing the squee, and it's at least tangentially related to my primary fandom, so that's nice! It's not like watching everyone go nuts for H50 or something. XD

What I'm finding interesting is how many people are coming out of it with ships that were better developed in previous movies. Like, a lot of people are going nuts for Loki/Thor, and I had figured that they would have already been nuts for Loki/Thor from Thor itself. And strangely, I'm not seeing a ton of Tony/Steve! Most of the people I follow are Clint/Coulson or Clint/Coulson/Natasha, or Thor/Loki, or maybe even Tony/Bruce fans. I was expecting a lot of mashup pairings, like Thor/Steve or Clint/Tony or whatever, but it seems to be more of a "pairing cementer" than a "pairing creator", if that makes sense. At least where I hang out!

(I'm not immune to that myself! I have a thing for Steve using Tony as a substitute for Howard, and Tony being really, really unimpressed by that, and I think there's tons of grist for that in Steve and Tony's interactions. :D )

But yeah. It was great, I loved it, I enjoyed the expansion of the Marvel movieverse... I'm just not really going for the fic or writing anything there myself. Oh, well! XMFC is still nice and busy. :)

I feel the same way. I enjoyed the film for what it was, a superhero flick with a lot of over-the-top costuming, snappy lines, and fun action sequences. But it didn't grab me. I think Sherlock has so utterly consumed me that there's no room for another shiny new fandom.

However, I can thank Avengers for making me aware of Hiddleston, whose appeal I did not get at all before. It helps that he's worked with Cumberbatch, so it's a way of extending the Cumbercrush.

From: [identity profile] midnitemaraud-r.livejournal.com
It's not blasphemy. I love Sherlock, but I have very little interest in the fandom aspect of it. I feel that way about a lot of the canons I love, like Avatar TLA (though I did write a fic for remix there), Doctor Who, Torchwood, my various K-drama and K-pop loves, various anime, Star Trek (reboot and all the others), Star Wars/SW EU. I read reaction posts (to episodes, songs, etc.) and some meta, and in Trek and SW I've read a bajillion tie-in novels over the years, but I don't feel fannish about them - i.e. fic-wise - the way I wanted to devour all the Highlander, Trixie Belden, Saiyuki and Harry Potter things. And now Avengers is on that list.

It's funny though. With Avengers, I don't really have an OTP - though I do have a CA OTP: Steve/Bucky! Clearly I have a thing for BFFs. Avengers-wise, though, I'm reading ALL the things. One of my favorite stories happens to be a Tony/Pepper; Steve/Tony fic, and I don't even like S/T all that much. I'm reading het, slash, gen (LOVE the gen fic!) threesomes, minor characters from the individual movies/various Avengers movie characters, minor characters/major characters ... I'm all over the board. Haven't written anything yet (four sentences doesn't count) but maybe I'll get there. One thing I am picky about, though, is characterization, but I've always been picky there, so that's nothing new.

The fannish bug is a lot like The Claw™. You never know when or how hard it's going to strike.

I feel fannish about them... but I have only read one fic so far that I didn't x out of before I was a third of the way finished. IDK, I just haven't found the right voices yet, I guess. I also don't strongly ship anyone, which is maybe the reason for the fic disconnect. But I love the hell out of the characters/actors (ESPECIALLY Loki/Hiddles), so we'll see!

So you're not alone! :)

People are just full of squee right now, it will die down to a more reasonable roar. In the meantime I just scroll over all of the stuff that doesn't interest me. I hear you. I loved The Avengers as a movie, found it really entertaining, liked all the characters, but have thus far felt no interest in anything else fannish. Didn't have any shippy feelings about any of them. *shrugs* The GIFs and icons are cool, yes, but I really don't care to read any fic. IDEK. Maybe it's just because I have so little time to devote to fandom, and reading fic in 3 fandoms is too much as it is. :-\

I'm psyched that you'll be motivated to keep writing Sherlock fic.

I have to say that I do try fic in new fandoms as often as I can, hoping to be swept away--but I'm also one of those people who never really leaves a fandom. Or I haven't, yet. I'm still as interested in Patrick O'Brian novels as ever, I still like HP fan fic, I would still read fic for basically any book I've ever liked.

I went to see Avengers for the same reasons I watched all the old SGA episodes and rented Inception--to help the fic make more sense. I just really enjoy a good fan fic. This is the way it is when you're a fast decoder, I guess.

It's totally okay that you didn't flip for it. Different things twig people in different ways, and for me, Avengers is a culmination of years of adoring RDJ and almost a year of being O_O at Tom Hiddleston, so of course I'm swooning. But you're still enmeshed in the wonderfulness of Sherlock, and that's taking your endorphins for something totally awesome so please, please do stay with that for the duration!

Of course, if during Ascendio I can talk you into Avengers With Drinks From the Fat Tuesday Slushie Machine at CityWalk, I will do so.

I'm that way with Sherlock. Love the show, but it's not causing me to need fic or the fandom or anything.
And actually in a way neither is Avengers has my comics interests is not actually the Avengers exactly, given Steve Rogers is the only character that crosses over to my current comic obsession (sometimes Black Widow), but when I just.. I prefer the WWII setting to modern day. Though really this doesn't surprise me.

I think for me it's I know to much of the comics and too many fic writers don't so it's like trying to read HP fiction written by people who have only seen the HP movies and never read the books. That's sorta what knocked me out of NewTrek fandom too. I respect they're separate universes than what I know, but it usually means the characterizations being written aren't the ones I want to read about.

I find myself unpredictably sucked in as well - and in this case, it was into The Avengers. I had seen both Iron Man movies, Thor and Captain America all before and didn't think about them a whole lot after my viewings. But when it came to The Avengers suddenly I was sucked in, obsessed and wanted more, more, more. Oddly enough I've started reading some fanfic for it which is odd because other shows I am passionate about (Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries, etc.) I actually have no desire to read fic for. Go to a con? Yes. Read or write fic? No.
