This is a totally random poll of people in fandom. I'm not doing anything with these results -- I'm just curious about people's backgrounds and experiences in fandom. :-)

But is it different from polygamy?

ummm, yes.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polygamy

Polygamy is the practice of marriage to more than one spouse simultaneously (as opposed to monogamy where each person has only one spouse at a time). Like monogamy, the term is often used in a de facto sense, applying regardless of whether the relationships are recognised by the state. I would add that most bigamy and polygamy is not known by the spouses of the polygamist/bigamist. It's like having double or triple secret lives, separate families that know nothing of each other's existence. It is also quite illegal to be married to more than one person at a time in most countries and cultures.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polyamory

Polyamory is the practice of having more than one loving relationship at the same time, with the full knowledge and consent of all partners involved. The relationships are long-term, intimate, and usually (but not necessarily) sexual. For example, a man and a woman are married. The woman also has another committed relationship with a man or woman not their spouse, but their spouse is fully aware of it and accepting of this. Occasionally, all three people are in one relationship with each other.

No, I was talking about polgamous societies. In monogamous societies, that's just cheating. :)

Thanks for explaining the differences & providing the links. :)

If you mean polyamory, it's not cheating. Everyone in the relationship knows about each other and they voluntarily participate. But if you meant bigamy, it's pretty much more than cheating. I'd be more than displeased to find my husband had a whole secret family and didn't ever mention it to me.

I meant: in monogamous societies, having secret second marriages and/or families is cheating. *sweats*

Sorry for the misunderstanding. I always forget to clarify. *facepalm*
