Student who failed exam: "It would really be helpful if we could have reviews before the exam."

Me: "Um, well, we actually had two reviews. One we went over in class and the other had all the complete solutions online."

Student: "No, I mean like a review FOR the test."

Me: "..."

Student: "Like the same problems that are going to be on the test, so I can practice."

Me: "WHAT? Are you fucking serious?!? Why don't I just give you the answers in advance so you can simply copy them down? Would that enable you to continue not studying? Or hell, I'll just give you an A for showing up!" (ON THE INSIDE.)

Me, really: "No, that's not going to happen."

Student, WHO IS GOING TO BE A TEACHER: *rolls eyes and stomps away*

My life's work, it is cut out for me. *sigh*

This makes me sad for the students of America. *sigh* I've actually seen something like this happen just a few weeks ago. And I attend a pretty good university-- pitiful, really.

OMFG... this is the fucking entitlement mentality that kills me. I saw the same sort of thing when I was teaching, and I always told my kids that I would NOT just give them the answers, but I WOULD help them learn how to use their resources correctly to figure the answers out for themselves. *sigh* I'm sorry you had to deal with that. *hugs*

I remember two teacher at the college I work discussing much the same thing - students who complained that there were questions in the exam that they hadn't covered in class and that wasn't fair.

Wot? You mean the students need to actually study for the exam? o.O

Grrrrr... that nonsense pisses me off like nobody's business, especially when I see the how much effort others are putting into their studies and professional development so that they can be good teachers.

Actually, I think it is very unfair of you not to sit the exam for them - you can't expect the poor dears to do it all for themselves!

I fear for that person's future students.

BTW, did I tell you that I now have THREE kids who proclaim, "I love math!"?

In 9th grade biology we temporarily had a teacher that pretty much gave people the answers if they got stuck on questions, rather than making them figure it out, I always hated that and was relieved when we got a real teacher a couple months later.

One of my accounting profs in college would give us a mock test a week before each of our three major tests to study with. The tests were all the same number and types of questions as would be on the real tests, it was basically just the math that would be different when it came time to write the real test. I always thought he was being more than fair, and really appreciated it. I can't even imagine having the kind of hubris that student of yours must have.

(The icon is of course aimed at your student.)

I used to have a teacher who makes test that way: he copies the homework questions, and plugs in different values for the numbers. Voila! Test questions!

The only minor problem is: the homework questions are from our textbook... and he doesn't know how to do the harder questions. So he relies on the more science-oriented students to supply the answer key for the homework's ...

And eventually, one of the student's exam becomes the his answer key for the exam (guess who). She gets an automatic 100%! (but may have screwed the rest of the class over if she is wrong. :) )

(No, it doesn't make me like him or respect him. He knows it and complains about it on front of the whole class... O_o )

I had an algebra teacher who did that. "Here are the questions on the test. Let's practice doing them." Then she would change the numbers. 2x+5y=20 would change to 3x+6y=30 on the test and some students would complain that it wasn't EXACTLY the same problem. Seriously.

Though I did get my only A in algebra thanks to her. >.>

Aw man, that reminds me of grad school, where everyone seemingly had the answers to the final but me. I guess your student should talk to my ex-classmates to learn how they did it.

I just... there is no logic to that train of thought. You're not learning if you're just repeating verbatim - and if you're not there to learn, then what are you paying all that tuition for?

Though I suppose this shows that logic didn't just fail at my company, it's failing all OVER the place :\

I just had a student ask me what he could do to make sure he does better (than a D) on his next quiz. All the quizes I give are directly from the textbook so as to force my students to do the bloody reading, for the love of God.

He didn't like it very much when I said "I don't know, read the book?"

I have had (college math) teachers do something much like what your student asked for--the test questions were the exact same problems as on the test, but with different numbers in them. This is an Algebra class one level before college level, btw.

Oh, and the exams were open-book. WHAT.

I'm not sure I actually learned anything. I totally failed first term college algebra.

What I never understood was how many people still did poorly when the teacher DID review the day prior to the test, using EXACTLY the same questions that would be on the test; especially when it was multiple choice to boot.

Um... no. WTF. Also, this reminds me of the students my roommate is teaching now. They really think everything comes to them that easily.

Sorry, but I know when I was in school, you definitely had to work for good marks.

Education, why you fail?

And this is why the American education system (is assuming this is in the US) is such a mess. If they were properly taught from the get-go, questions like that would not need to be asked. Honestly, it boggles the mind that students like this expect a free ride.

When I was an undergrad it amazed me the number of people in my classes who felt that if they had to do the least amount of work they were being wronged in some inconceivable way.
