Prophecy Friday
Aug. 4th, 2007 12:27 amI went to two panels today in which a good chunk of the panel time was spent talking about the current LJ crisis. It was a good thing, though, as it felt sort of like a community meeting, with everyone tossing out ideas and banding together. It was like everyone needed a chance to get their frustrations out. We know how to wank hard in this fandom, but we seem to come together when we need to.
I made a post during Strikethrough about how this felt like the beginning of the end, and watching people start to flee LJ in the course of 48 hours makes it seem even more so. It's weid to be at a fandom event while all of this is happening, too. Usually you don't get to see a lot of otehr people reacting to a situation; they're all sort of faceless. But sitting in a room with 100 others who are all concerned makes you feel a little stronger, you know?
FTR, I have no plans to leave LJ, though I do plan to transfer journal entries over to the other journals I have when I get home from Prophecy. You can find me with this same user name at JournalFen, GreatestJournal, and InsaneJournal. I probably won't back up my LJ to JF, since that's invite only these days, but I'll put as much as I can over at the other two places. But you know, THIS is why I never bought a permanent account. After seeing fandom shift from mailing lists to LJ years ago, I just didn't think it likely that LJ would be our home forever.
The thought of fandom becoming scattered is scary. We've built a home for ourselves here on LJ, and it sucks that 6A doesn't want our business. And to be honest, how do we know GJ and IJ are going to want it? What if we work hard to move somewhere, only to have this happen again in a year or two?
But back to Prophecy stuff. Programming started today, and I went to a canon/fanon Draco panel run by
titti (and who else?); a slash panel run by
treewishes,
dementordelta, and
snapetoy (which ended up being a sort of community meeting about LJ); the keynote luncheon (which turned out to be a lot more interesting than I expected); a panel on the end of canon run by
titti,
snapetoy,
bethbethbeth, and
cordelia_v (who started it off with a fantastic lesson on the history of fandom); and then to a panel I ran. The day seemed to go by fast!
Then to a Harry/Draco meet-up (where I won art by
a_real_phony, yay!), then back to the hotel for some drabbling with a group of folks (I'll post my drabble later), and then to watch GOF with a bunch of gloriously perverted people. It's amazing how porny that scene in the graveyard is when Voldemort "touches" Harry, heh.
And now I'm exhausted, and MUST SLEEP. It's almost 2:00 am. Why am I still awake? :-P

I'm keeping my eye on that one, at the very least.

Date: 2007-08-04 12:54 pm (UTC)I'm not planning on leaving LJ either, but I am planning on posting on IJ and GJ too... And possibly make sure my rec lists don't have that many LJ links. A lot of them are now friends-locked anyway, so I'll have to change them all. So annoying. :/

Date: 2007-08-04 03:08 pm (UTC)I'm fishsanwitt and I've been reading your lj for a while. I'm a stage manager, in Manitoba and I really loved your review of 'Spring Awakening' a few months ago.
I'm just posting to let you know I'm friending you, here and on GJ and IJ. I'm fishsanwitt everywhere :)
Possible help with LJ
Date: 2007-08-04 04:08 pm (UTC)I see two options.
The hardest, but possibly the most fulfilling, is to simply build our own journaling system, or buy a Movable Type installation and run it on our own servers. That's a way to basically futureproof ourselves, and if we do it with a host that is free speech, and create local backups, we should be okay.
That being said, I do have some contact at 6A, and one of them is a VP, so I could talk to him about this issue. Anyone have any things they'd like me to ask? Or, is someone heading up this thing? That might be a piece of it. We need to show a strong, united front.

And btw, I totally LOVE your comment yesterday on the Shipping Harry panel, when Fiona was asking about your reactions to DH and you said that though you ship H/D, you totally would ship Snarry after reading that and Delta practically fell over! LOL
