There's now a lovely list of well-known HP smut writers posted on the journal!

And there's also the adorably wanky theblacklist community, which is quickly becoming a list of the kinkiest smut written in many fandoms.

Unfortunately, they did leave a lot of people off that list--cybele_san, miraminx, somniesperus and icarusancalion spring to mind, not to mention the whole SB/RL crowd. I suspect it's someone with a vendetta against a certain group. I wish people would stop commenting there; maybe whoever it is will give up and go away. The whole thing is totally stupid. IMHO, of course. [g]

It seems pretty obvious -- to me, at least -- that blacklisting people whose work you don't approve of is absolutely the wrong way to go about it. If this person had instead created a "recommendations" list of writers/artists whose work is child-friendly (and whose NC-17 stuff, if any, is password-protected), then that would have been a much more positive way to go about it. She still would have gotten flamed by a few people, but it wouldn't have turned into what it is now.

I mean, come on! The worst way to try to get people to do something is to tell them you're going to publicly announce that they're evil because they don't do it. It's human nature to react by saying, "You can't tell me what to do!" and then to do it more, just to prove you can.

Boycotting is an economic protest strategy. It doesn't even make sense to boycott in this case! Ironically, she's drawing a great deal of attention to exactly the sites she wants people to avoid, and that attention is not coming from the people she expected.

What you said. I'm just not feeling that articulate about it. It's just about the most futile thing I've ever seen; I'm only hoping tomorrow it dies down enough that it's not in 2/3 of the posts on my friends list.

I'm also annoyed because I went through a lot of trouble to get miraminx's web site listed under all the parental control sites we could find, like Net Nanny, SafeSurf and IRCA (ICRA? I can never remember). And here's this idiot coming along and saying, no, it has to be password-protected, because we need to take the control out of the parents' hands. But I refuse to argue with anyone who's stupid enough to do this.

Password protection is pretty futile, IMO. Registering, like you did, is really the only way to keep underage kids from getting to your site. You can put up a warnings page (which I do, btw), but kids can still go right in. You can't keep passwords from falling into the hands of pre-teens who are determined to get them.

If parents are just letting their kids surf the 'net with no filtering software, the kids are much more likely to accidentally encounter hard-core pictures than they are to read 60k of fanfic with an explicit sex scene at the end.

You're right that arguing with someone like that is pointless. It'll all be old news by this time next week, anyway!
