It's so interesting to scan the flist after two weeks of being away from it. The fics people are talking about are completely different, and there's something new everyone's either wanking about or bemoaning the wank of. I can't help but wonder if I really missed anything, you know? Ah, fandom.

It's also amazing how much writing one can get done when scanning the flist for an hour at a time isn't an option. I love LJ, but it can really be a bit of a time sinkhole.

On a completely different note, I just learned this morning that the US Senate soundly defeated the FMA! Frankly, I'm stunned. I really thought that was a lost battle, and I'm almost giddy that it wasn't even close. It's almost enough to give me a spark of hope for my country. :-)

Happy summer (or winter, depending)!

Oh that's fantastic! :D I'm so happy to hear that :) I wish I could say the same for my country (Australia) Although it seems that our government is trying to overturn the gay unions legislation in the ACT (The capital) >_< But yay for the US!

I know you don't know me, but it's good to see you around again.

That was in my inbox this morning. I'll be in a good mood for the rest of the day. Did you catch TDS the other night? Just one more reason to fangirl Jon Stewart.

(the link is a bit wonky this morning... I dunno if you'll be able to see it.)

Sorry, I'm getting spammy, but Comedy Central's got a great quality video. Just click here and then choose the William J. Bennett interview

Most people I had talked to were saying there was no way it would pass but I wasn't so sure. When I got the email form the HRC I was so happy I forwarded it everyone I knew.

what surprised me was there were two new senators that voted against it.

All the news articles I've read said the same thing; the senators weren't expecting it to pass, but wanted to be on the record as voting against gay marriage so they would look good for the upcoming elections.

If you are home (as in HERE) now, and you still are interested in the Boy Band Sing Along, we are going tonight! I think it's just me and my roommate, should be fun though.

Oh, that sounds like a lot of fun! MDH and I are both crazy jet-lagged, though, and we haven't seen much of each other for three weeks (we were both traveling for business). So we have a nice quiet evening at home planned.

But definitely let me know when there's something like that coming up again! The Buffy sing-along was great fun. :-)

I think they are doing the boyband next Thursday AND the week after. I'm very excited. I think my roommate might back out even, which is BOO but I am going anyway, even if I go alone!

Yay!! That's actually the first I've heard of it. I think I've actually regained a little bit of faith in my country. This is awesome. :D

I'm just so glad that part is over, you know? I was dreading seeing my country enshrine discrimination in the Constitution.

Unfortunately, they weren't really trying to pass it at all. It's just something that politicians can add to their score card so that when people want to look at records to decide who to vote for they can look at something that is controversial and that everyone has an opinion on and say "yes" or "no" to that person based on how they voted.

This is why it takes years to get anything done (if it even ever gets done). To quote the great President Andrew Shepherd from the movie The American President, "I was too busy keeping my job to do my job." I think that sums up American politics.

Well, yeah, I'm sure that's true. But quite a few Republicans switched sides to take a stand against it, which I thought was cool. It also sends a strong message to the public that we aren't going to write discrimination back into out Constitution. :-)

I just learned this morning that the US Senate soundly defeated the FMA!

I just learned it reading your post. Huzzah! I'd written my senators and representative (and got back automated "thanks for your interest...great quantity of E-mail...get back to you soon" messages from all three); but I did get a real response from Hillary Clinton who agreed with me that bigotry has no place in the Constitution.
