emmagrant01: (gay marriage)

From a political action list I'm on:

For the first time in U.S. history, both houses of a state legislature passed a bill allowing civil marriage for same sex couples. Now California could set the standard in the battle for equal rights for all Americans. But Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is planning to single-handedly halt the expansion of basic civil rights to everyone in California.

Signing the Civil Marriage and Religious Freedom Protection Act into law would move California forward on the right side of history by affording the same rights to all Californians, regardless of sexual orientation. And it would set an example for the entire nation! But Governor Schwarzenegger has said that he will veto the Civil Marriage and Religious Freedom Protection Act passed by both houses of the California State Legislature.

Don't let Schwarzenegger veto the bill! Click the link below to tell Schwarzenegger to sign the Civil Marriage and Religious Freedom Protection Act.

I want my letter to start, "Dear Tool" and end with, "this is completely obvious and retarded. Give them the right so so we can go back to raking your party over the coals."

1) I'm so there for gay marriage. I voted for it back in was it 2000? I don't remember. It didn't pass.

2) Arnie relaly wants to get re-elected, my gut feeling is that he's going to veto it.

I totally think that gay marriage should be legalized, but in some sick sick way, I almost understand why he would veto it. in, 2000, I think, it was voted on and the public voted against recognizing gay marriages from other states, so he feels like this would go against the state citizens wishes.

However, I feel that if something is constitutional or unconstitutional, it really doesn't matter what public opinion is. I mean, if we suddenly polled Mississipi and said "do you think slavery should be legalized?" and 65% said "you betcha!" that doesn't mean we should change the law acordingly.

So, yeah, that's me babbling. I'm still happy to live in CA now instead of KS!!!

He's not going to sign it. He's already said he's going to veto it, and he has his reasons. He's trying to shore up support on the right, which he's recently lost to broken campaign promises. One problem is that in 2000 we had Proposition 22, when Californians voted not to recognize same-sex marriages from other states. Makes it harder to justify legislating against the apparent "will of the people", you know?

It's too bad, really, since Schwarzenegger's made it clear he personally doesn't oppose same-sex unions. He's pandering to the wrong part of his constituency, if you ask me. We lefties up here in northern CA didn't really dislike him at first, it's things like the cuts to education funding and this veto that are pissing us off. Nobody liked his predecessor; he really had a chance to be very popular across the state, which he's currently squandering.

Well, anyway, his official position is that gay marriage should happen via popular vote or court action. Which it will, soon enough. I can't say I'm worried that it won't.

Duly forwarded, although since I'm Canadian, it likely won't matter a bit. Still, you've gotta do what you can.

Today Massachusetts (how the hell do you spell that anyway?) voted against de-legalizing gay marriage in their legislature. It became legal there last year, I think, and this was the first big attempt to reverse that policy. The fact that it failed makes me want to thumb my nose and go neener neener neener to folks who are so afraid of catching the gay if "those people" are given the same protections and legal standings as everyone else.
