Amidst all the bad news, I already see people on my f-list talking about moving to Canada.

PLEASE DON'T LEAVE ME!!!

We need all the liberals we can get in this country! We have an awful lot to fight for, and so many people who need us not to abandon them. In fact, why not move to Texas, where you're really needed? ;-)

Besides, lots of people are pissed at the shrub at the moment. Today's numbers (from this site) show we're not alone:

Bush Job Approval as of September 4, 2005
Strongly Approve 23%
Somewhat Approve 22%
Somewhat Disapprove 14%
Strongly Disapprove 40%

And it's only a matter of time, remember.

1233 Days Left!

There is a countdown clock here, but I can't manage to get it to show up in this post.

We can't leave. We can't flee. Someone has to fix this, and it will be us.

Er...no. I can't see it (re: clock). I dunno, every country has its problems. Don't get me wrong, Canada is lovely, and if you truly want to move here, fine, but yeah.

leaving the country because you hate the president is stupid. AND it does nothing to help the regugees inthe south. It would be much more helpfull if everyone who whines about leaving hte country would donate 20 dollars and go give blood. THAT might actually be usefull.

LJ automatically eats Java/scripts (like the code for the clock) before entries are posted coz they could have password miners, etc. I think they're working on a way to allow some scripts in the future though.

Gah, I hate Bush so much. Our Prime Minister John Howard is so far up Bush's ass that it makes me sick. (As you may or may not know, I'm Australian)
Let the countdown begin!

Yes, and if this continues? He could very well be kicked out of office. Seeing as how he's doing a miserable job...

At least that's what I'm trying to convince myself.

Even people who do decide to leave shouldn't give up. I live in the UK because it's just where life put me, but last election I did everything I could to help out, and in fact managed to make sure two other expats voted in the election when otherwise they wouldn't've managed.

I mean, I agree that just leaving is silly, but deciding that you can no longer stand to be surrounded by other Americans is no excuse for not continuing to do what you can from wherever you end up.

They're always threatening to leave, and they never do. Like I said after the election, if these people really want to make themselves useful to the Democratic cause, they should leave Massachusetts and California and move the swing states, like Ohio.

That said, I'm fed up enough with the rampant government bashing, opportunistically and cynically using a disaster that no government in power would possibly have responded to properly, that I'm half-tempted to pick up stakes myself.

Why are they talking about Canada? It's too damn cold there! Go to Australia with gorgeous beaches, gorgeous people, gorgeous accents, gay friendly politics, and national health care. *snicker*

Seriously, however, my husband and I have been talking about moving for two years. Politics is only 1/3 of the situation. So, if I leave you Emma, you can blame the fact that I can get up at sunrise, walk 100 meters to white sand, and watch beautiful gay men run in speedos on a beach all year. *drools*

Hey, now! We have the nice beaches (in the summer), the attractive people (in the cities), the neat accents (on the east coast), the gay friendly politics (offer void in Alberta) and the national health care (although provincial governments may fuck this up individually)...

Hey, you know, the grass is always greener to people in crisis. ^_^ Canada also has beautiful forests and majestic mountains. Lots of people would argue that while it may be cold you've also got loads of water where Australia has a lot of desert and when the population gets over 50 million they're going to have issues. When global warming speeds up and the caps melt Canada's going to be prime real estate!

Everywhere has it's good and bad points. You have to pick based on what's important to you. Australia has a lot of the things on my short list, and and on my husband's plus it's a short flight to get to Hong Kong to do business. *shrugs*

I just find it amusing that the first place people in America mention when they start doing the "this place sucks I'm getting out!" thing is Canada. There are lots of places to go, people. In Central and South American you can live like a king on your US savings account (we know loads of people in Panama now) as long as you don't mind the drugs and somewhat unstable governance. You can always go to Europe and pick your spot but each country has it's own problems like language barriers (and it's much harder to get work sponsorship in EU countries). You have to learn whole new alphabets in Russia, the Middle East, China, Japan and the like (in addition to all the other challenges). If you're just spouting off, or thinking about moving just because of politics, then IMHO you've got your priorities a bit backward. Choose a place to live because you want to live there, not because you don't like the President. I may think he's a jackass but every four years there's another chance to get rid of him and they only last a maximum of 10 years or two terms.

So, sorry if the comment seemed to put down Canada. I just figured I'd point out in a bit of a sarcastic way that Americans have more than one option for flight. ^_^ Besides, I don't think you lovely folk want that many of us up there. We're uptight! *laughs*

Australia is WAY more gay friendly (at least in the neck of the woods I spend time in) than the United States. While your current admin is so far up Bush's backside that it's kind of strange there are still far more rights and privileges than over here. I've seen more open displays of affection between homosexuals in Brisbane in a week than I have in SF in two. And no one batted an eye. It was rather nice. If two men so much as hold hands where I live (much less sit on a blanket together for a picnic) they get beat up.

Perhaps it's just Queensland but the support network for artists, writers, medical care, and gay friendly (or perhaps better put 'what you do isn't my business, mate' philosophy) climate are just part of the reasons my husband and I will be joining our friends that live there.

I'm certainly not someone that thinks the grass is greener - everywhere has drawbacks. Even where I live has it's own positives - housing is reasonable, taxes are moderate, and if you are a racing fan there's the Indy 500/Brickyard/US Grand Prix etc. However, I'm happy to have trade-offs for the things I find important.

You know what they say over here - "Love it or leave it." *shrugs* Let's just say I don't love it.

Well I suppose its gay friendly, except for the politics side of it. Havent been to Brisbane for two years, sicne i live just an hour norht of Sydney, i spend most of my time there. We have same great gay night spots, but still in Sydney you see your gay haters. *sigh*

I deamdn a perfect society somewhere in the world like right now.

Don't worry. If they move here they'll find different problems.Anyone who wants to move here because of politics would change their mind after they do a bit of research...Canada is not exactly a "mover and shaker".

1233 days, is it? Well, at least there's an end in sight...but I worry about the public's short-term memory. People are angry now but will they stay angry enough to make real change in 2008?

I live in Europe and never miss an opportunity to vote (whether or not my absentee ballot gets counted, I don't know) but the voter turn-out rate at home is still pretty abysmal. I suspect the whole "culture war" is going to crop up again as a major issue in the next campaign, too.And with the Supreme Court possibly looking very scary by then, I will do whatever I can to make a difference wherever I am.

honestly, things are going downhill so rappidly, that he's just going to continue to piss more and mroe people off, so yes, people will still be mighty angry in 2008. well, they will at this rate, anyway.

I am so grateful...

... That I discovered your fic, because friending you for that reason has given me so much more. I so enjoy the things you share, and your opinions, what you beleive in and stand up for. When my RL friends are whining through their drama, I can count on you for intelligent thoughts, and interesting ideas.

I too am not going anywhere. Every election I try to get my freaky friends out to vote. I make a little progress every time. They often don't see the point, when what most of us seem to think doesn't sway those sworn to represent us, but I always say that when history recounts this time, at least we won't be counted with the "good" Nazis.

Actually... I wouldn't mind if some people came here where I live in Houston, Texas to freaking help out. We're so overrun everywhere it's only a matter of time until there's an interstate war or something. Some of the refugees are killing and stealing from the people who are bringing them food and water, trust me, I've seen it. I'd love some help down here because it's costing me money.

I said this when Bush won... It's not Bush as President that scared me because he'll be gone. It's the people that put him in office and the people that didn't go out and vote. Even after Bush is gone, they'll still be here voting people like him into office. That is what scares me the most. Now all that being said... I will never move out of this country. I'll keep shouting my beliefs to the highest mountain, hoping that maybe the younger generation that are still impressionable will help change things.

If only his ratings where like this for the election. He is running this country like a bad business in to the ground. He knows nothing and nether do any of his 'people'. All The news people do is cover shit up and then people yell at the few places that don't for only looking at the glass 1/2 empty on the thing Bush has done.

Fuck i hate this government the whole world's screwed the way it acts.
