Hang in there!
Sep. 4th, 2005 09:10 amAmidst all the bad news, I already see people on my f-list talking about moving to Canada.
PLEASE DON'T LEAVE ME!!!
We need all the liberals we can get in this country! We have an awful lot to fight for, and so many people who need us not to abandon them. In fact, why not move to Texas, where you're really needed? ;-)
Besides, lots of people are pissed at the shrub at the moment. Today's numbers (from this site) show we're not alone:
Bush Job Approval as of September 4, 2005
Strongly Approve 23%
Somewhat Approve 22%
Somewhat Disapprove 14%
Strongly Disapprove 40%
And it's only a matter of time, remember.
1233 Days Left!
There is a countdown clock here, but I can't manage to get it to show up in this post.

Date: 2005-09-04 03:45 pm (UTC)I mean, I agree that just leaving is silly, but deciding that you can no longer stand to be surrounded by other Americans is no excuse for not continuing to do what you can from wherever you end up.

Date: 2005-09-04 03:55 pm (UTC)That said, I'm fed up enough with the rampant government bashing, opportunistically and cynically using a disaster that no government in power would possibly have responded to properly, that I'm half-tempted to pick up stakes myself.

Date: 2005-09-04 05:16 pm (UTC)Seriously, however, my husband and I have been talking about moving for two years. Politics is only 1/3 of the situation. So, if I leave you Emma, you can blame the fact that I can get up at sunrise, walk 100 meters to white sand, and watch beautiful gay men run in speedos on a beach all year. *drools*

Date: 2005-09-04 05:54 pm (UTC)I live in Europe and never miss an opportunity to vote (whether or not my absentee ballot gets counted, I don't know) but the voter turn-out rate at home is still pretty abysmal. I suspect the whole "culture war" is going to crop up again as a major issue in the next campaign, too.And with the Supreme Court possibly looking very scary by then, I will do whatever I can to make a difference wherever I am.
I am so grateful...
Date: 2005-09-04 06:28 pm (UTC)I too am not going anywhere. Every election I try to get my freaky friends out to vote. I make a little progress every time. They often don't see the point, when what most of us seem to think doesn't sway those sworn to represent us, but I always say that when history recounts this time, at least we won't be counted with the "good" Nazis.

Date: 2005-09-04 07:48 pm (UTC)Hey, now! We have the nice beaches (in the summer), the attractive people (in the cities), the neat accents (on the east coast), the gay friendly politics (offer void in Alberta) and the national health care (although provincial governments may fuck this up individually)...

Date: 2005-09-04 08:03 pm (UTC)Hey, you know, the grass is always greener to people in crisis. ^_^ Canada also has beautiful forests and majestic mountains. Lots of people would argue that while it may be cold you've also got loads of water where Australia has a lot of desert and when the population gets over 50 million they're going to have issues. When global warming speeds up and the caps melt Canada's going to be prime real estate!
Everywhere has it's good and bad points. You have to pick based on what's important to you. Australia has a lot of the things on my short list, and and on my husband's plus it's a short flight to get to Hong Kong to do business. *shrugs*
I just find it amusing that the first place people in America mention when they start doing the "this place sucks I'm getting out!" thing is Canada. There are lots of places to go, people. In Central and South American you can live like a king on your US savings account (we know loads of people in Panama now) as long as you don't mind the drugs and somewhat unstable governance. You can always go to Europe and pick your spot but each country has it's own problems like language barriers (and it's much harder to get work sponsorship in EU countries). You have to learn whole new alphabets in Russia, the Middle East, China, Japan and the like (in addition to all the other challenges). If you're just spouting off, or thinking about moving just because of politics, then IMHO you've got your priorities a bit backward. Choose a place to live because you want to live there, not because you don't like the President. I may think he's a jackass but every four years there's another chance to get rid of him and they only last a maximum of 10 years or two terms.
So, sorry if the comment seemed to put down Canada. I just figured I'd point out in a bit of a sarcastic way that Americans have more than one option for flight. ^_^ Besides, I don't think you lovely folk want that many of us up there. We're uptight! *laughs*

Date: 2005-09-05 05:52 am (UTC)Perhaps it's just Queensland but the support network for artists, writers, medical care, and gay friendly (or perhaps better put 'what you do isn't my business, mate' philosophy) climate are just part of the reasons my husband and I will be joining our friends that live there.
I'm certainly not someone that thinks the grass is greener - everywhere has drawbacks. Even where I live has it's own positives - housing is reasonable, taxes are moderate, and if you are a racing fan there's the Indy 500/Brickyard/US Grand Prix etc. However, I'm happy to have trade-offs for the things I find important.
You know what they say over here - "Love it or leave it." *shrugs* Let's just say I don't love it.
