Some random things on a Tuesday night
Jul. 26th, 2005 10:14 pm1. You can now vote in the Multi-faceted Fanfic Awards contest. Unfortunately, I haven't read most of the nominated fics, so I'm left with the decision either not to vote or to vote for the one fic in each category that I've read. And voting closes July 31, so there isn't time to read them all. Hmmm... I suppose no one ever suggested these things were fair anyway.
2. Is anyone else a little freaked out by the fact that Target's jingle for its back-to-school ads is "Baby Got Back" -- a song that proclaims the joys of anal sex? With little kids happily dancing around with their new pencils and backpacks? Maybe it's just me.
3. I thought I'd solve my problem of not having time to re-read all the HP books by buying the audio versions and listening to them on my commute. And then I looked at the price tags. OMFG!!!! 0_o So, that would be a "no". Unless I can find used versions, or something. :-P
This random update of Emma's life brought to you by White Wine: it's what's for dinner!
Edit:
I was in college when that song came out and working in after school programs with elementary kids to pay my way. It was the early 90s, and hip-hop was the big thing, so all the kids knew the songs. We were putting together a talent show, and a group of kids wanted to do a dance to this song. Needless to say, I was uncomfortable with the idea of a bunch of 8-year-olds gyrating on stage before their parents to those lyrics. So I tried to convince them other songs would be better.
Well, they were determined, and it became a big argument. Finally, in frustration, I said, "Look, the song just isn't appropriate! I'll bet you don't even know what it's about."
And one little girl said, "Oh, we know that. It's about butt-fucking!" And promptly clamped a hand over her mouth when she realized what she'd said. I think my jaw hit the floor -- I had no idea how to respond at the time. The other kids giggled for what seemed like hours, repeating "butt-fucking" over and over. Many of them seemed to understand what the term meant. I was horrified, imagining that ten sets of parents would be yelling at me the next day, wondering where their child picked up such a term.
That was one of the first times I questioned my choice of profession. And not the last, certainly. :-P

Date: 2005-07-27 03:31 am (UTC)The last round or two, the only fics there that won anyway were Snape/Hermione. This, I think, is not our usual stomping grounds.
Oh, congrats on your award you mentioned yesterday, though! Yay!

Date: 2005-07-27 05:02 am (UTC)Like wasting time making icons? I feel like showing off my collection of Lichtensteins tonight.
The curious thing about that site's awards is that many of the fics are self-nominated by the authors. And it only takes one mention to get a fic listed. But it's nice to know someone else mentioned ours. A little treat, so to speak. Some fics listed I think are very, very good, and some I wonder about. And the slash fics? I mean as much slash as I read, I should at least recognize the authors or the stories, right? More than 25% at any rate.
But it's really no big deal to me, and obviously not to you.

Date: 2005-07-27 08:15 am (UTC)Hear, hear. It isn't a popularity contest. I enjoy a wide cross sections of fics by numerous authors, and I look forward to many more years of this wonderful fandom. Now that it's drawing to a close, I hope that we can rid ourselves of some of the wannabe writers and keep the true writing fans around!

Date: 2005-07-27 01:12 pm (UTC)People like different things in fan fiction: different interpretations of characters, different settings, different levels of angst, and different kinds of storylines. And isn't it great that there's such a huge variety of fic out there, so we can all find something we like? ;-)

Date: 2005-07-27 03:55 am (UTC)And I have taped recordings up to GoF, which you could have for as long as you wanted? But the library seems like the best option, I'm sure they have them.

Date: 2005-07-27 05:49 am (UTC)That said, it's not really an appropriate song for children to perform in a school assembly. The language is crude and clearly sexually suggestive. The danger isn't that children will lose their innocence from exposure to such material, though. They will seek out and find the material whereever it is and if said material is a biology textbook, they'll smick, giggle and call it "dirty" just the same way. The danger though is adults with delusions that children are not innocent. i.e. A pedophile seeing a child mimic a suggestive dance or hearing them talk dirty and imagining the child actually wants sex. Then again, pedophiles with such inclinations really don't need anything to support their delusions ... they have them anyway. And maybe worrying that a child could inadvertedly attract a deluded pedophile is a form of attempting to "blame the victim" in a sense. It may be just that allowing children to perform such songs in adult sanctioned shows is just too darned squicky to us!

No schoolteacher can deny!
You know the next line is That when a girl walks in with an itty bitty waist--And a round thing in your face--You get sprung
And I am too tired and not clever enough to make that line okay (or at least not sound completely perverted!).
Seriously grossed out! I cant believe Target would do that!!
But your song makes me giggle!

You get hungry
Wanna take a bite
Cause you know that little mind is ripe
For learning what you're sharing
It's the reason for the rags you're wearing
...
Somebody stop me. Please.

Audio Books
Date: 2005-07-27 12:20 pm (UTC)I listen to audio books in the car all the time. I belong to audible.com, and it is $19.95 a month for 2 books (a bargain). You can download them and either burn them to CD or upload to your favorite MP 3 type device. I use my IPod, and then play it through the car stereo.

Date: 2005-07-27 01:08 pm (UTC)Re: Audio Books
Date: 2005-07-28 10:54 am (UTC)Honestly, just for information not as something I am advocating, USENET (newgroups) almost always have the all of the HP books in great quality MP3 files available for free (or available for stealing technically...). There are a bunch of alt.binary groups out there and all 18 CDs worth of HBP were available before 6 am Pacific time Saturday morning. I did actually purchase my copy of the HBP audiobook, but I'm not going to comment about the other books. The provider I use for usenet does not save any logs of uploads and downloads, they all only exist in RAM and activity by a certain person that was more than a day old would not be available--most of the time it's gone in only a few hours, so there is no danger of being reported for what you select to download. This means one's own morality about the issue is the only barrier to what you decide to download. The uploads by others seem to be available in over a month. The client (aka program) I use for usenet downloads, Unison tells me if all of the files are available before I start my downloads.
My first few reads of HPB was done via audiobook and it made the book more suspenseful because I didn't have the page structure to give me clues that a lot of dialog was coming up or that a chapter was ending. I feel that it made Harry and Dumbledore in the cave much more suspenseful because I had no clue has to how many goblets he'd have to drink. It's also great to get things done while 'reading.'

I tend to agree, but I can't help it--I *love* that song.

Date: 2005-07-27 08:01 pm (UTC)And this is why I wouldn't be good at your profession, because I'd probably say, "That's right, and there will be no butt-fucking until you're at least 11." Or something else wildly inappropriate that I would find terribly ironic and funny, but would sound horrid.
It's kind of funny though. Just goes to show you that in America, buttsecks is fine between heterosexuals and/or when there's a good beat as a backdrop.

Date: 2005-07-27 08:23 pm (UTC)I like big butts and I cannot lie---
Donkey sings it about his sweetie the dragon in Shrek, even!
And I must admit that I am partially into slash for population control reasons, save the earth by going same sex and dying back, y'know. I am pleased to know there is a whole new generation who can conceive innocently of buttsex, though of course they should not be expected to have any till they are old enough to have urges.

Date: 2005-07-27 08:39 pm (UTC)I had a friend in high school who was "saving her virginity" until marriage, but she let her boyfriend fuck her ass and somehow that didn't count. I guess you're in it for population control. She was in it for god. I'm in it because I'm a hedonist that way. ;)
