1. You can now vote in the Multi-faceted Fanfic Awards contest. Unfortunately, I haven't read most of the nominated fics, so I'm left with the decision either not to vote or to vote for the one fic in each category that I've read. And voting closes July 31, so there isn't time to read them all. Hmmm... I suppose no one ever suggested these things were fair anyway.

2. Is anyone else a little freaked out by the fact that Target's jingle for its back-to-school ads is "Baby Got Back" -- a song that proclaims the joys of anal sex? With little kids happily dancing around with their new pencils and backpacks? Maybe it's just me.

3. I thought I'd solve my problem of not having time to re-read all the HP books by buying the audio versions and listening to them on my commute. And then I looked at the price tags. OMFG!!!! 0_o So, that would be a "no". Unless I can find used versions, or something. :-P

This random update of Emma's life brought to you by White Wine: it's what's for dinner!

Edit:

I was in college when that song came out and working in after school programs with elementary kids to pay my way. It was the early 90s, and hip-hop was the big thing, so all the kids knew the songs. We were putting together a talent show, and a group of kids wanted to do a dance to this song. Needless to say, I was uncomfortable with the idea of a bunch of 8-year-olds gyrating on stage before their parents to those lyrics. So I tried to convince them other songs would be better.

Well, they were determined, and it became a big argument. Finally, in frustration, I said, "Look, the song just isn't appropriate! I'll bet you don't even know what it's about."

And one little girl said, "Oh, we know that. It's about butt-fucking!" And promptly clamped a hand over her mouth when she realized what she'd said. I think my jaw hit the floor -- I had no idea how to respond at the time. The other kids giggled for what seemed like hours, repeating "butt-fucking" over and over. Many of them seemed to understand what the term meant. I was horrified, imagining that ten sets of parents would be yelling at me the next day, wondering where their child picked up such a term.

That was one of the first times I questioned my choice of profession. And not the last, certainly. :-P
