I read about the UCC thing. I did a stint as a secretary for a UCC church years ago and they were always very open and inclusive. I've been kind of surprised that I haven't seen Rita make a post about this though she might have done so on her other blog that I don't really frequent. This whole refusing to air spots (the political adds and now this) is more than a bit disturbing.

Hell, the whole thing is disturbing. *sigh*

I've been listening to a discussion about faith and politics on The Tavis Smiley Show on NPR this week. Early on in the discussion, the religious leaders on the show brought up the fact that "grace" is not only righteousness but also justice. That morality can be nothing without tempering both both of those forces in equal measure. They noted that the Democrats were the party of "social justice" and fell hard on that side of the moral plane, but the Republicans have hijacked the side of righteousness and put it forward as the only true feature of a moral and good member of a Christian faith totally ignoring the needs of their fellow man in favor of individual wealth. They've also asked the question if morality can be separated from religious belief and, as such, if the intent of the constitution was to truly "separate" church and state or to simply ensure that the state could not create a sponsored religion and/or give one religious doctrine undue influence in the governance of the people. It's been interesting to say the least and the fact that the major networks are doing this to the UCC is just one more reason why discussions of that sort by leaders of Christian denominations is, in my opinion, very important. Being moral in this country, or living a moral life, means different things to different people. Faith means different things to different people. And to shut down the UCC for loving everyone and wanting to share what they believe with everyone just seems wrong at best and unconstitutional at worst.

Um, yeah. I need to get on that, don't I?

Actually, I'm trying to put together a press release to go to our local newspapers today or tomorrow. (But I've got a ton of meetings today!)
