A friend just wrote me to let me know someone is posting a fic on AFF called Left My Heart.

Here's the summary: "In the beginning of the Last Battle, Draco faked his own death to protect Harry. He was to go to the States until Voldemort was dead and his Death Eaters were captured. Two years later, Harry decides to go on vacation, and runs into the one."

Interesting...

Curious... Keep an eye on it, just in case.

:( That's not nice, even if the author is 13 like she says. And apparently it was deleted "for no apparent reason" and so she is reposting it. Although at a glance the first chapter is not like LMH, perhaps she thinks that stealing the idea and rewriting it means that the story becomes hers.

maybe you should comment right away and not wait.

. . . if She's 13 why the hell is she on AFF anyway?!

She seems to have used the title and the basic premise of your story, and then taken her own direction. Which she may well think is fine, but I do think it would be a good idea to say something right now. Titles do get duplicated at times, but that's not a common one, so I can't believe it's coincidence.

Well it is a song title, kinda... but I agree, at least letting her know that she's being watched might help her consider how closely she wants to keep her story to the original LMH... perhaps a request for a title change as well would be in order.

Also - if she's 13 then AFF should really delete her account.

Titles get duplicated, but title AND theme? That's a bit much.

I vote on saying something about it.

yeah, but Emma's story takes place in San Francisco, hence the title from the song "I Left My Heart In San Francisco", so if this girl goes and places the story in SF as well, then she's really showing to rip Emma off here. No place else in the US would fit that title.

Emma, this really sucks. I agree with everyone here, though -- an eye needs to be kept. Even if she changes the story, if she starts lifting dialogue and action, it's fraud.

And AFF and she's 13???

Please R/R! I worked hard on this!

This message is for AFF.NET: My story got deleted from this site for no fucking reason, so I'm posting it again. Whoever doesn't like it, too bad.

Ummm....cuz maybe she's underage...and maybe now because she's trying to swipe from you?

She must be 13. The writing itself shows that, sadly.

I'd say contact her and suggest she looks for another title as you already have a fic with the same title and also a post-war setting where Harry runs into Draco. From what she's written (none too well), she hasn't used anything from your plot - the common elements of Harry running into Draco postwar are so common in fandom as not to be significant. However two fics with the same title will cause confusion, even if the title is based on a pre-existing song. Perhaps you could give her suggestions from the titles you considered but rejected (and maybe a little beta advice while you are at it)?

What [livejournal.com profile] ias said. The postwar meeting (even in America) is pretty common, it's really the title that's the shame. So a gentle approach might get her to a) change it, and b) improve that 13 year old writing. *grin*

I question the fact that she is 13 and writting 'R' fics on AFF.net. Someone should really alert Ayla as to that an underage has an account there, to protect her butt.

Hmm I would keep reading updates and seeing if it is similiar. If it is I would proceed to have a little chat with her if I was you.

Sorry about this hun. *hugs* But never fear for yours is and will always be far superior!

Have you had a look? It's one single chapter and it's so bad it's embarrassing. I wouldn't worry about plagiarization - you need more brains than this to properly cut 'n paste.

At risk of repeating everything everyone else has said, it's hard to judge whether or not it's going to be really similar after one chapter, but I think one should keep an eye on it. Though, I would recommend asking her to change the title; it may confuse some people, who think it's yours.

*groans* I didn't even finish the chapter. I started to get a migraine.

This child's so called fics all sound eerily familiar. e.g.

A Fine Line Between Love and Hate
Draco gets kicked of his house because his dad finds out he’s gay. While thinking about a place to go, Harry Potter suddenly pops into his mind...

The first sentence in her summary sounds like a fic I read before. I probably even got that link from your QaJ post-Hogwarts rec page. The second sentence sounds like 'Welcome to the Real World'.

Seems she's combining several fics as a means to 'write' an original. Now that sounds like a 13-year old's logic. But no 13-year old should have an account on AFF.net.

I also echo everyone else's opinion on what to do with this kid.

*hugs*

Wow, now that is blatant thievery. I've been accused in the past of stealing ideas from other writers, but I was oblivious to the theft as I hadn't read the fic... and there were only 3 things that were similiar. However, in this case title and story synopsis sound so eerily familiar, it's rather icky. Of course, your Left My Heart is "the" fic ;) and I'd rec nothing else but that Left My Heart. Eagerly awaiting the sequel.

Well, I suppose this is slightly on topic, as I just came over to say that I finished reading the revised "Left My Heart" (ahem, your one, of course) last night. Definitely much tighter, more description, better explication of motivations, plot elements woven in from the beginning, all the stuff revising is supposed to do. :) I kept noticing fixes to parts that had seemed plot-hole-y before, and I definitely noticed the new elements or more developed elements that set up for the next part of the story.

And I, for one, was quite relieved and pleased to see Harry tell Draco about what had happened to Neville, even though I doubt anyone else in the word got half as worked up about that little loose end as I did.

You think? I've been considering. At least she should change the title, IMO.

Actually, you're right about that!

From: [identity profile] emmagrant01.livejournal.com
Yes, I know. That's what caught my eye: it's not exactly the same, but the title is close enough, and the fact that it's post-Hogwarts, set in the US... Yeah.

From: [identity profile] emmagrant01.livejournal.com
It is pretty bad, huh? You know, part of my issue here is that the title's the same, and people might see that and think it's my fic! :-P

From: [identity profile] emmagrant01.livejournal.com
Quite a few folks have suggested I contact her. The title issue does concern me honestly. I don;t have any real grounds on hich to insist someone change their title, but I think I should at least try to make a case. Maybe I will -- thanks!
