Date: 2004-11-17 10:50 am (UTC)It's like, when you first learn about straightforward, heterosexual sex, however young you are, there's this sort of disgust/awe/horror thing going through your mind. You put WHAT WHERE?!? There's a fascination there that draws you to know as much about it as you possibly can (this actually even extends farther back even to kissing. I remember listening to a preschool teacher having to dissuade her students just about every five minutes from starting up conversations about 'kiss on the lips'.)
But eventually straightforward sex becomes a theory you get used to. After all it's everywhere, you can't avoid it, everyone else seems to have no problem with it for the most part so why should you? (Also eventually the 'don't knock it till you've tried it' factor kicks in, too.)
Then somewhere around early teenagerhood, I suppose, the same thing happens with the idea of oral sex. The reaction (You put WHAT WHERE?!?) doesn't change, only the 'what' and the 'where'.
I think a lot of people's introductions to slash must work in pretty much the same way. Horror, awe, and just that little niggling bit of interest that eventually grows until you stay up late nights just to finish a damn story, or compulsively refreshing your friend's list just to see if
C'mon, I'm sure that's not just me...
But rimming... it doesn't matter how long you live with the idea. No one talks about it for the most part, most of the people you might talk to about it outside of the confines of a bedroom give the knee-jerk reaction of disgust, so there's no way to become immune to the slight dirtiness... but then again, having already gotten used to so many other things, the proportion of curiosity to disgust gets a little more even...
Then again, there's the fact that for many people performing rimming or being rimmed, at first there's an element of humiliation that most other sexual practices just don't normally evoke (as in the fic you rec'd above... which was particularly delightful, by the way.)
Basically, it just can't help but push all the buttons of particularly twisted individuals such as you and myself.

Date: 2004-11-17 02:47 pm (UTC)I'll never forget the first time I ever heard the term (or the concept) of rimming: when I was 15, I used to ride my bike up to a used bookstore that had an adult section. I'd sneak in, grab a few books, then stow them inside a copy of something else and read. I found I had a special liking for gay porn (what a shock, huh?), and it was in the context of reading a kinky little bondage scene in a book of lesbian erotica that I first read about rimming. And I was like, whoa. It was disgusting and yet totally hot. It would be two more years before I became sexually active, but that idea was definitely in my head, associated with a long list of weird things people did in bed.
Yet, I never asked anyone to do it to me. In fact, I didn't ask for stuff in bed very often. I was pretty shy about it all, so I tended to let guys take charge. I was probably 19 or 20 the first time I experienced rimming myself. A guy was going down on me, and then he just licked a little lower, and I went oh my god. That Neville/Draco rimming fic I recently wrote was pretty much about that moment, in fact. Write what you know, as they say.
The first time I did it to someone else, it totally turned me on, and that's about when I realized sex was a much more complicated thing than I'd ever thought it was before. This is one of the great things about slash, IMO: it's opened my eyes to the incredible variety of things people get sexual pleasure from. I was never particularly judgmental about sexual behavior, but I'm so open-minded about it now that it freaks my husband out ! :-D
So yes, it does push my buttons, and I think it's exactly that weird combination of disgust and pleasure and guilt that does it. It is a bit humiliating to admit you enjoy someone sticking their tongue up your butt, or that you like sticking your tongue up other people's butts too. It's such a relief to be able to write about the details of why it's so cool in fanfic, though, you know?
So, yeah: it's a weird thing to be turned on by. I'm weirding myself out just writing this. Thank god for pseudonyms! :-P (*)

Date: 2004-11-17 03:34 pm (UTC)Anyhoo, I think the appeal all stems from the fact that rimming is considered taboo. Anything taboo is appealing to people though very few would admit to it. One wants to find out exactly why something is deemed off-limits.

Date: 2004-11-17 02:30 pm (UTC)For me, in most of the fics I've read that contained rimming, the appeal is in the reaction of the person being rimmed...the way they totally forget themselves, which, at least to this degree, I've never noticed while reading about any other form of sexual practise.
I also love the battle between the feeling of disgust and embarassment at the thought of it and the intense feeling of pleasure on the other.
So, no worries, dear - you're definitely not alone :)
