Hey, look at this! "Left My Heart" made [livejournal.com profile] fanfic_hate! I just wish the anonymous non-fan had got the title correct...

ETA: Just out of curiosity, I wonder which fandom cliches s/he thinks LMH is so riddled with? I could really use that information. Hmmm...

Ahahaha! Where is the sarcasm, the superiority, the spark? THAT'S fanon Draco she's describing! Mwahaha. Unless she thinks jumping bucktoothed impressions of Hermione is wit? Honestly, your Draco is more canon than a lot out there.

You know, you're right about that! That does sound like fanon Draco. Isn't that a bit cliched? *is confused* :-P

Hee. What I liked is that she couldn't hate it all the way because the sex was so hot. :)) I reread it last night, by the way, and OMG it SOOO is. *pants*

I'm looking forward to the rewrite and (sometime not too far out, I hope) the sequel.

Hey, thanks! BTW, did anybody jump in on your attempt to start a conversation about this on your LJ?

From: [identity profile] wordplay.livejournal.com
Not really. Heidi basically agreed with me, and Cat mentioned that she thought that slavish devotion to IC portrayals in fic was a waste of time anyway, since she tends to define anything not written by JKR as automatically out of character. She certainly has a point.

FWIW, I'm taking that as confirmation that I'm right. *is smug* You're another big P-H H/D fan, though, so I'd love to hear your thoughts on the topic. I think I'm almost done writing P-H H/D; I posted one yesterday and am mostly done with the 2nd part to Noise, and then it'll be back to pure appreciation for me. :))

I'll try to do go contribute to the discussion, then. Actually, Rita and I were thinking that the whole fanfic_hate and cliche thing would make a good Chix-Talkin-Fix topic.

The only one I can think of is flaming!queen!draco, but honestly, is it a cliche if you make it work?

For me, the question is who decides what's a cliche and what isn't? I honestly don't see the cliches in LMH. Maybe that's because I haven't read enough H/D.

Coming out of lurking around your LJ to say:
I'm afraid I can't help you with the cliches - I certainly did't see them when I rushed to my computer every week for your updates!
Sorry I never left a review (I'm horrible at leaving feedback, I know); just let me say now that I loved LMH to pieces, and I'm very much looking forward both to the edited version and the sequel!
Rose (who promises to leave reviews in the future!!)

Well, frankly I have no use for people who spread the hate anonymously. For god's sakes, grow some balls. The poster, not you.

Actually, I laughed out loud when I saw it. [livejournal.com profile] fanfic_hate is practically a rec list, so I thought it was pretty cool that my fic popped up there.

Bah. I'm finding this far more annoying that I should, but it honestly feels like a personal insult to the readers of LMH. Are the hundreds of readers who anxiously awaited the weekly update and who are now anxiously awaiting the sequel just stupid? Are we all so very uneducated that we have no appreciation for "real" literature, and we're not sophisticated enough to see the bad characterization? I think not. I still love LMH, and it will always be a fandom classic for me.

Damn the man. Save the Empire!

As I mentioned to someone above, I actually regard [livejournal.com profile] fanfic_hate as a rec list. I mean, when you scan it, most of the posts are along the lines of "Everybody loved Fic X, but I hated it!" I've found a couple of great reads that way! ;-)

And thanks!

Well, this is clearly a site right up there with fandom wank. Why people want to indulge in such juvenile behavior is beyond me.

I love the fact that everyone responding to her said your story was great.

Regarding cliches: the thing is, *everything* has been done before. What matters is how you handle it. Do you make your story believable, or do you rely on cliche as a short-cut for characterization, plot, etc? I do not think you, dear Emma, use cliches as a short-cut.

Hey, this sounds like a great topic for CTF! *grin* I've always wondered who gets to decide what's cliche and what isn't.

Actually, I was flattered when LMH showed up there. I mean, when you scan through the rest of the entries, you'll see it's in some great company! ;-)

It *would* be a good ctf topic. Do you want to raise it, or me? Can I nominate you, since I'm leaving town the day after tomorrow?

From: [identity profile] emmagrant01.livejournal.com
You're leaving? Where you going?

Oh, and I might raise it myself.

I'm going to Colorado family reunion - my mom's family, so some relatives who were not able to be at the memorial service in New York will be there. Originally I was not going to go because of the Trinidad trip, but after my aunt's death, I really want the family time. I'll be gone for a week.

Oh, yes, the family reunion! That will be good. Have fun!

Well, that anon poster couldn't drum up much support for the wank, though, so that's something. And congrats.

I think the fandom cliche is writing a great fic that receives rave reviews when the poster's fic did not. That cliche.

And you made the list too, so congrats to you! I actually think it's a bit of an honor, in a weird sort of way. :-P

Just out of curiosity, I wonder which fandom cliches s/he thinks LMH is so riddled with?

Why, the one where Harry and Draco want to shag, of course! And the one where they can hold a remotely civil conversation without eating each other in a non-sexual way...well, the sexual way, too. And the one where Draco's so totally obviously flamingly gay.

I mean, like duh!

Personally, I've yet to find anything to complain about, even in rereads. So I just pulled that out of my ear. And you rock, babe.

Date: 2004-07-28 05:19 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] emmagrant01.livejournal.com
LOL! I think I like that cliche too.

I got a huuuuuuge comment on my journal from my friend's boyfriend, because since it's not said point-blank in canon that Harry and Draco shag, SLASH IS TEH EBIL OMGWTF. And I ignored his comment because I got bored with it.

So maybe it's that cliche.

For what it's worth, I really liked your characterization of Draco AND Harry. Granted, I didn't get around to finishing the story until a few days ago, but when I did, I was glad I had!

I always say, there's OUT of character and then there's slightly-twisted-character-which-could-be-caused-by-the-viewing-angle. Former = evil, Latter = all about the good writing.

Thanks! I have occasionally heard people say they think my characters are way OOC, and hey -- why is that considered a problem? If they were IN character, would they be gay? *scratches head*

Most fanfic presents an OOC perspective, IMHO. And that's one of things I like about it!

did that make you feel popular?

I think that appearing on [livejournal.com profile] fanfic_hate
would make me feel popular. I mean, they obviously think you're important. "you hate me? you really hate me? *beam*"

As many authors could tell you, I am a bit of a professional appreciator here, and H/D are my OTP of all TIMES! I've read through some amazing dreck in the search for good H/D. Your work amazed me, thrilled me, had me rushing to my computer each week. I didn't comment due to the flood of comment, as I didn't wish to be cliche and repeat something said entirely too often. However, you have written nothing to be hated, so whatever balless wonder posted that, they are obviously confused, perhaps suffering from early senile dementia.

Well, I certainly don't labor under the delusion that any fic is going to please everyone. I'm beyond thrilled that many people liked it at all.

One of the best rec pages out there is Switchknife's: http://notquiteroyal.net/switchknife/

That should keep you busy for a while!
