For those that don't know, yes, it is an Americanism, named after the infamous shorts that Daisy Duke wore on The Dukes Of Hazard. However, I'm here to tell you that my cousin Marlo told me that I was wearing Daisy Dikes before they became fashionable, cause I had a fabulous ass back then, and wore my shorts a sneeze away from illegal.
Your comment prompted me to go check the dates myself. I thought I remembered the last couple seasons in 1st run, but based on the dates that's unlikely given just how young I was when it went off air. So, changed my answer since apparently I saw it entirely in reruns. >_
I have to confess, however, that Cluegirl had to explain it to me - right before she had to explain "bear". I suspect I've seen re-runs (a few) and not the original broadcast - well, it would have to have been, because those few episodes were seen in Australia.
I'm old enough to have seen the original, my brother and I used to watch it as kids, although it could have been repeats, but not to remember Daisy Duke, she didn't stand out for me at all. Still know the term though.
Why isn't this poll pandering to MY issue--how it drives me crazy to see them referred to as "Dazzey Dukes" because I would pronounce that "DAZ-ee" and not "DAY-zee"? Pander to my issues, darnit! :D
I vaguely remember a hip-hop booty video in which it was spelled some version of "Dazzey." At the time I assumed it was a ghetto/ebonics thing, but the copyright workaround theory makes sense.
TNT used to Dukes of Hazard the reruns ALL THE TIME! I was even flipping through channels at my parents' last month and saw a reunion movie from the late 90s.
When the show was in the original run I was old enough to know what it was, and that Daisy was wearing some short shorts, but not aware enough to realize the symbolism of a couple of fellas driving around in a confederate flag emblazoned car...
*look at the girl with the daisy dukes ON, hey girl you got it goin' ON*
The ones who have mentioned Dukes of Hazard are all right. Watch an episode of the show and you'll see where the name belongs. Also considering the Duke brothers had a cousin named Daisy.. hence the namesake. :)

Yes, we saw the origial. My mom in particular was very fond of the show. Go figure.
For years, my sisters and I had a favorite game: we would cast the movie version of "Dukes of Hazzard." (Of course, then they actually went and made a movie. Which I haven't seen.) We would do the blockbuster version, the Royal Shakespeare Version, the comedy version, etc. We played the game with a couple of other shows, like "The A Team," but "Dukes" somehow was the best. It's a really fun game!
I started out confident in my knowing exactly what Daisy Dukes are ... but the poll questions kind of threw a seed of doubt in my mind, as they sort of implied something other than a pair of short shorts. I started to wonder if it hadn't been a derogatory phrase from the 1930s or something, and it just so happened that later on we changed it to mean Daisy's apparel ...
See what happens when you try to read too much in to things? Sheesh.
