Did anyone else SEE that? Conan O'Brien asking Tom Felton about Harry/Draco fanfic and then showing two Harry/Draco manips? OH HOLY HELL.

I don't know how I feel about my OTP being hung out there for all to see. :-/

If you really want to know...

OMG I was sitting here yelling NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO CONAN WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY at the screen. DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD:

NOT COOL. D:

But... I knew EXACTLY which manips he was going to show him. Heh.

I'm just all IDEK about it. I'm old school enough that I want fandom to be something that happens in secret because I still worry about what TPTB might do. I want to protect the privacy of the people who do this, because... well, for all the reasons we've always been so protective of what we do. But of course I know it's not really a secret anymore. Slash is something that is known and even acknowledged by the mainstream in ways I could never have imagined 10 years ago.

But still, did he have to show manips???

From: [identity profile] ciel-vert.livejournal.com
Yeah like, I didn't mind the discussion of it as much? Because like you said, slash and fandom is OUT THERE now and everyone knows about it. But... that manips are for US, the fans, and yeah, it just made me uncomfortable that they were paraded out there like they were. It was weird.

From: [identity profile] emmagrant01.livejournal.com
I've never been comfortable with those manips anyway because they were made using pictures of the actors when they were 13 or 14. That just crosses a line for me, and even though they're incredible well-done, they squick me.

And the idea that THOSE are the representations of H/D shippers in the mainstream media just makes me want to hide in a hole in the ground.
From: [identity profile] tsuj.livejournal.com
Here, here! I get really pissed off and grossed out when I see them. Invading children's privacy and subverting their images for any reason is just not on. No matter how famous those children are. If I want to look at h/d imagry, I go for the many talented artists' work. (come back, little sherant, come back!)

And I too want to keep fandom for fen. My boss showed me a Time or Newsweek article about fanfic. She came away with "It's all porn." I didn't, but I didn't like the article much either.

Well, you know how scripted these things are. He knew it was coming, and reacted the way he always does when people bring up H/D to him.

It's interesting to think about how mainstream slash has become, though. I'm kind of reeling.

Actually, all the way back in 2004, the same thing happened to David Duchovny. He was on Jimmy Kimmel and promptly got some semi-explicit Mulder/Krycek manips thrown at him. He seemed more amused by it than anything else, but I still cringed when I first saw it. But that was years ago and I guess fandom is a lot more mainstream now...

Not sure about the OTP thing being out there for all to see either. Although, I suspect Tom knows H/D very well and may have laugh about it more than several times with Dan. Tom has been bombarded with it, and Dan is too geeky to not want to know about this. :)

Don't worry -- you'll be able to watch it online tomorrow.

The actors know about it and have known for a while, sure. I'm glad they're good sports about it, but still, I'm not comfortable with it being so out there. I'm imagining it coming up at work tomorrow, and not in a good way, you know?

*Nods* I understand you. I hope it will be all right for you at work tomorrow and won't cause you a problem. People know I love HP at work, but they consider it so juvenile that they don't really give it second thought...

Photo manips are, I confess, one of the areas of fandom I never feel comfortable with because the actors and actresses were so young at one point. The "classic" photo of H/D that Tom totally knows about I am all right with because it actually looks quite subtle and frankly, pretty (and I know exactly which two photos it came from), but that's more an exception than a rule.

From: [identity profile] emmagrant01.livejournal.com
Were you in fandom when that manip first appeared? I can't remember if you were or not. But anyway, it was SO controversial because the actors at the time were around 13, and to use their faces in that way was considered really inappropriate to a lot of people. It still makes me uncomfortable. Fanart is fine, but taking actual pictures of kids and manipulating them to put them in a sexual situation is not not okay with me, and it's never going to be. :-P

Tom's brother actually had one of the manips on his cell phone background for like 2 years, so it's not news to TOM, but it sure is like having someone show a naked baby picture of the ENTIRE FANDOM on national television. I admit, I cracked up, because it's not news to Tom, and he takes it in stride, and it was a great interview, but there is that niggling worry about WB and TPTB going "OMGWTF We didn't know about this make it stop!" and that would suck.

Date: 2011-07-27 04:47 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] emmagrant01.livejournal.com
Tom's been talking about H/D slash for years and has known about the existence of those particular manips for at least as long, so yeah -- it's not him I'm worried about. It's more the way all of us who write or even ship H/D have now been reduced down to one channy photo manip on a nationally televised program. Like THAT is what we are.

Slashers have always been so careful about keeping what we do on the fringe to protect ourselves from all sorts of shit. Maybe the world has changed enough that we don't have to worry so much about TPTB coming down on us. But maybe it hasn't. :-P

Gah... there's so much beautiful art of them as adults, why oh why oh why pick those fracking manips?

I hate that slash is suddenly the titillacious flavour of the month for the mainstream folks who want to get a reaction.

Although I've clearly been around far too long when my first thought was, "did he get permission to repost?"

*face!palm*

LOL! It is uncomfortable. In the Supernatural fandom, they've created EPISODES (and an entire over-the-top slash!fan character... who is HILARIOUS) making fun of fandom (in a good-hearted way), and the CW and all the actors and show PTB seem to find it endearing (if a little odd). A lot of people were really, really offended at the meta-ness and the "outing" of fandom and slash in particular and felt like Kripke (the show creator) was poking fun, but I just saw it as a We See You... and you're kinda funny kind of way.

Since Rowling knows about us and the actors also know, and can have a laugh about it rather than getting bent out of shape... then I guess that's all that matters. People who don't "get" fandom will find it odd and move along, and those of us who do get it can either cringe or laugh, too, I guess.

*pets you!* Okay, I'm spoiled; in my current fandom, one of the two lead actors ships not just the OTP of the fandom, but himself and his costar. If you showed him a manip of the characters, he'd probably squee himself stupid. Not all my fandoms have been so cool about it, though, so I know what you're getting at! There's always one person at a con who asks the actors about slash, and then you all want to hide under the table.

*hugs!*

Graham Norton did the same thing to Elijah Wood when the LotR films were done -- that time, it was similar manips of Frodo and Sam.

Besides, hasn't Tom Felton known about H/D art for years? He mentioned in an interview once that his brother used to have a manip as screensaver on his phone just to embarrass Tom ...

I think that is the first interview I saw with Tom. I saw a commercial for Conan and wasn't going to watch it. I made sure to catch the rebroadcast after your post about it.

He is very charming and pretty funny. I like that he was (mostly) a good sport about it. It was clear they discussed some of that before going on the air. Not sure if he knew the manips were going up or not but it seemed like he planned to talk about them.

Yeah...that didn't make me super uncomfortable. There was one thing squicked me WAY WAY WAY more. The guy who wanted to adopt him after having changed his name to Lucius... Yeah, please tell me that isn't the guy who goes to the HPEF cons and cosplays and has the lover who is Draco?

Not that people outside of fandom knows about that guy. But, if they did some digging, that would make fandom look way worse than a few photomanips.

That isn't to say that cosplay sex is that big of a deal. I think that squicking people is people being prudish. What I do think is a big deal is when that is taken to a level of legal name change and having it take over a person's "real life".

For me personally, photomanips tend to fall into the realm of RPS which always squicks the hell out of me when it gets within 10 feet of an actor. I feel that an actor, lending their image to a character, has to accept that their image might be used in fan stuff, like a description in fic or having a character look like them (to varying degrees) when being drawn/painted/etc.

As for TPTB, I really don't think they would want the publicity of court battles and all that if they were to take people to court, even if they had a huge problem with it. Also, I wonder about how they actually could.

As we speak, porn is being produced as "parody" with names like "This Ain't Tru Blood" that is fanfic-esque porn. So, if that is legal, where money is being made, I would wonder how much success they would have suing over fanfic. (Use of pictures and copyrighted images would likely be a whole different matter but that is besides the point)

If anyone wants to see the HUGE list of movies like that to see my point, go to any porn dvd site and look in the parody section. There are TONS. (Including a Star Trek Next Gen one. heheh)

Now, I should do work. :)

well, here in Japan media pays a lot of attention to fujoshi (rotten girls) shippers of anything yaoi, boy's love, call it what you feel like. So fujoshi are trying to be proud about it, the media interaction is quite amusing, although sometimes diminishing, sadly.

Only a matter of time the shlash is outed? Although.. yeh, of all the artwork, photomanipulation are the shiftiest, especially if the faces that are used are of underage actors, even the host might get into trouble for spreading dubious material featuring minors LOL^^;

OMGosh this is hilarious!!!
And...he brought it up himself... I don't know what to think of it... :S

But still I must say, I'd rather have 'em leave us alone. What does it matter to anyone, what we wanna make of the movies and books? It's our imagination, our fantasy and I still feel like it's kind of a private thing... Even if sharing it with ppl all around the globe, it's still nothing I would wanna discuss with Tom or Dan or really anyone of the HP-Cast.

Hell, this is weird... makes me feel like a quirky freakish...whatever... O.o"

However, it won't stop. What was that urban dictionary rule?
Rule 34: If it exists, there is porn of it. No exceptions.
If one is a famous person, you can't avoid this. Gotta deal with the fame in many ways, I guess. ^^"

I couldn't help laughing at his reaction! I bet they're all pretty well aware of the phenomenon by now though. I was listening to Mugglecast's LeakyCon coverage and Evanna Lynch (admittedly a fangirl before appearing in the movies) didn't bat an eyelid at the shipping discussions, it seemed she had something of a taste for it and has a not-so-secret crush on Dumbledore, which made me smile :-)

Still quite content in this happy world of H/D. So whatevs. :P
