Apparently the British use of the word "rubber" comes first, because you rub with it. Then it got applied to the material, and from there, to certain objects made out of rubber.

You know, it took me a minute of staring and going down to read the comments to work out what was so funny. Then I remembered my US slang. LOL

Reminds me of the time a couple of British tourists wandered into the card shop I was working in, and asked if we had any "Novelty rubbers. You know, for the kids."

I thought my strait-laced co-worker was going to have a stroke until I explained.

Weelllllll one of my US friends didn't understand why we guffawed at her mention of a "fanny bag". It means something altogether ruder to us.

I'm still trying to come up with an alternate word for 'fanny pack' for just this reason. :D

Hip pouch! Then again, it kind of sounds like you're a slightly off-kilter kangaroo, doesn't it? Hmm.

It's a bumbag here in Australia, too.

And when I first saw the pic of the rubber ducky rubber, it took me a couple minutes to twig to why it was amusing. It's just a rubber! Nothing odd about that!

OK, the thing you need to understand for this is that a "dud root" is Aussie slang for someone who isn't so good in bed.

[livejournal.com profile] annella was visiting [livejournal.com profile] moonflower_rose in Melbourne a couple of years back. They got the tram into the city in the morning, but couldn't get one back at night because the tram route was closed for the night by then.

So [livejournal.com profile] annella accused the tram line of being a dud route, not knowing the aforementioned Aussie slang. Rosie of course died laughing, and promptly told me the story and I also died laughing.

The only people who have ever found this funny have been fellow Aussies. Explaining it seems to take away the humour, because the Kiwis and Brits I was living with at the time didn't find it half so amusing as Rosie and I did.

(Incidentally, this same bit of slang means we find Canada's Olympic uniforms from a few years back HILARIOUS. I mean, they had ROOTS written in huge letters across their chests!)

LOL! Oh, one of the best things about being an English speaker is how many awesome variations of the language there are, and how many funny things can come up in comparison. Thanks! :-)

I've heard it called a "bum bag" by my British friends who were completely appalled at my use of the phrase "fanny pack."

I have the worst mental image of rubber ducky printed condoms now. If only I had a fandom where they'd be appropriate. XD

I did spend a few moments trying to figure out just how the condom was packaged to look like the duck before I remembered we were talking about two nations divided by a common language and saw the eraser.
