Grandma: "Have you got all the Harry Potter books?"
Me: "Yes, I even have several copies of each. American editions, special editions, the British editions..."
Grandma: "Oh, wow! You can read British?"
Me: "Ummm... Yeah."
Grandma: "Can you speak it too?"
Me: "I can, actually."
Grandma: "You're so smart! What other languages can you speak?"
Me: ... 0_o

I love her to death, but really? Seriously, this is the stock I come from?

FTR, she realized her mistake a few minutes later...

I love screwing with phone reps in the States whenever I have to call businesses there. My surname has a "z" in it, so. >.>

When I lived in Arizona, my address was on Avenida Azahar. I can't tell you how many times I would give my address to someone on the phone and they'd ask, "Is that a street or a road or an avenue?" I always had to explain that one. :-P

I've been asked that too, once or twice; but by people who knew precisely what they were saying, so it doesn't count. On the other hand I've had people come up to me as I was reading one of my French editions and ask if I could read French. (No, I'm just looking at the pictures. Oh, wait: there aren't any!)

I wish I could give my Grandma the benefit of the doubt there, but she also thinks Mexican is a language. ;-)

Awwww....bless Grandma's heart! Hehe, being bilingual is a good thing when you're writing Harry Potter.

I lived in New Mexico for a year and you wouldn't believe how many people 'back home' thought I had moved to Mexico. "I didn't know you spoke Spanish!"

Hahaha.

Around our house we actually like to collect the HP books in whatever languages we're learning, because, well... I like them and I already know what the words are supposed to say, so they are pretty good for brushing up on your foreign languages. So we have, I think, Russian, Spanish, French, Latin, and Ancient Greek. It's fun.

I just like the fact that there are Latin and ancient Greek editions.

LOL...nice one Grandmum. Meanwhilst, a former boss had once said to an Austrian client: "Well, Hans, he obviously can't speak Austrian like you and I [sic]."
