Star Trek flailing
May. 13th, 2009 03:00 pmHave just seen Star Trek. Hired a babysitter so I could go in the middle of the day by myself and revel in the slashy goodness. Holy shit, people. Holy fuck. I need me some Kirk/Spock fic STAT. Preferably something written in the last couple of weeks. Surely there are a few hundred new comms by now. Recs? Anyone?
OMFG, wasn't it brilliant how they made the film AU from ST:TOS, so that the entire future is wide open? I mean, seriously, is that not the most brilliant thing they could have done? Now there can be all new fics, books, movies, and fics -- did I mention fics? -- none of which have to follow the TOS canon! Or, they could just rewrite it all, given the newly rewritten history! You don't really even have to know much about the TOS-verse in order to read and write it! Mwahaha! The old-timers are either going to love that or hate it, but I am just in awe of the brilliance of that move on the part of the film's writers.
And holy shit, the slashy potential! Sure, they threw that whole Spock/Uhura thing in there to take the edge off, but by the end of the film, Spock and Kirk only had eyes for each other. Old!Spock practically said so much to Young!Spock at the end. He was all, "You neeeeed each other."
Oh, yes. They sure do. And hell, throw Uhura into the mix too. Why not?
And holy shit, that last scene, whenEric Chris Pine's Kirk walked onto the bridge, he had utterly morphed into Shatner's Kirk. It was fantastic. I got chills.
I have been waiting a long time for this film, because I knew it would give me just the kick in the ass I needed to get back into fandom. Consider my ass well and truly kicked! Woot!

Date: 2009-05-14 02:26 am (UTC)It was awesome! I knew it would be. I squeed like a mad squeeing thing when Simon Pegg finally showed up. And Sulu! Of course, John Cho is just THAT hot, baby! Rrrowrr. And while K/S will always be classic, I am SO down with the Spock/Uhura. And Karl Urban was totally channeling DeForrest Kelley.

Date: 2009-05-15 03:08 am (UTC)I think Emma and I have both always enjoyed Star Trek. I don't see me writing fanfic anytime soon, but I've enjoyed ST since shortly before Next Trek started up.

Date: 2009-05-14 03:38 am (UTC)Huh, that is a pretty awesome way to think about it and makes me like the movie a little bit more. (I have huge problems with time travel and I'm insanely sick of it in anything--books, movies, TV)
And yeah, the Spock/Kirk aspect of the movie made me giggle in glee.

Date: 2009-05-14 03:39 am (UTC)I loved the fact they made an entire AU -- fanfic writers should take note of the brilliance of the way it was done as well.

Date: 2009-05-14 07:34 am (UTC)and yes, utterly brilliant to use the history, but alter it enough to allow anything to go. really inspired.
i thought all the boys got their characters spot on. made them their own but had enough of the original boys' takes involved to have no doubt who they were. awesomesauce.
and for me, i had to go with a bit of kirk/mccoy. i mean the man almost risked his career just to bring kirk on board with him.
this is totally gonna revive the franchise with a vengence.

Date: 2009-05-14 03:40 pm (UTC)As for recs, I haven't been reading much K/S simply because I've been too overwhelmed by the awesomeness that is Sulu. :D :D :D :D :D I've been writing, for the first time in a couple of years, and over on Dreamwidth, I belong to Singularity (a fic comm for rebootverse, welcoming anything from movie-fic to stuff that would be different across all the other parts of the Star Trek Universe -- what would Picard's life have been like if he didn't have the example of Kirk to look up to, at least not in the same way?, and so on), and I started Sulu Is My Captain, for fic/art/meta involving Sulu, classic or reboot. Let me know if you want a Dreamwidth invite, btw! ^_^

Date: 2009-05-14 05:08 pm (UTC)Thanks for the links, and I would love a Dreamwidth invite! I haven't written in 18 months, and I'm starting to think about it again. I need to immerse myself in this fandom a little more (and maybe go back and watch a bunch of ST:TOS to remind myself), but it's going to happen! It's so exciting!

Date: 2009-05-14 07:30 pm (UTC)For the most part, I did like it, though! I was just a little disappointed in some aspects, but that's cause I'm a silly old Trekkie. :P

Date: 2009-05-18 04:31 pm (UTC)I would love to get to a point where I feel comfortable writing fic, and I hope I can do it without being taken down 18 pegs by the people who know the universe 20 times better than I do, yanno? The ST universe is pretty huge and intimidating!
