Nationwide Prop 8 protest

There was a HUGE protest rally that went on at the Castro on Friday. I had dinner reservations for a restaurant next to The Cafe and couldn't get there in time because of the huge amount of traffic. But I thought of you when I was at The Cafe, thinking that I totally have to drag you and everyone else out there the night before Azkatraz starts.

Oh, how awesome! I've just been so heartened by the protests, for some reason. I hate that there's a reason to protest, but am loving the fact that people are finally not taking this one lying down.

It is a fantastic idea, but I really wish that there was some coordination for an anti-amendment-two in Florida protest/project, or at least an acknowledgement that the Florida protests would also deal with protesting in favour of overturning Amendment Two. The Florida amendment passed by fewer votes than Prop 8 did, which means there's fewer people that need convincing to overturn Prop 2 in Florida (if one uses the amendment process). So, wibble.

I understand. Here in Texas, our amendment passed overwhlemingly two years ago, and everyone just sighed and accepted it, as if it had been inevitable all along. It was as if we all realized we were fighting for the principle, and not to really make a difference.

So I don't actually see this as being about Prop 8. Most states have anti-marriage amendments now, and maybe this would be a first step in pushing back. The thing I think is cool here is that people are finally saying "ENOUGH" and are ready to take to the streets. Finally.

I like the way you phrase it - it makes a lot of sense. And yes, definitely time to push back. The ridiculous thing about the fight in Florida is that most of my friends didn't even know it was on the ballot until they saw the sign for NO ON TWO in front of my house, and that's why they voted against it. Otherwise, they wouldn't have known about it before they went in to vote, and it was a very confusingly written amendment.

I would march with you if I could! I'll be in KC with Fi and Mijan, so my guess is I'll find myself protesting somewhere in Kansas City with many a slasher friend. *\o/* Although I'm still terribly saddened that it's had to come to this. :-(

Yes, but all these amendments being passed with nary a peep of protest afterwards was even sadder IMO. Maybe this is the start of things changing.

The nearest one to me is 4 hours away. I'd still go despite the drive, but unfortunately I already have family commitments that are going to take up most of the day. Good luck to everyone that'll be at one of the protests!
