More on OOTP
Jul. 16th, 2007 08:30 pmI saw OOTP for the sixth time today, and I still love it. It may be my favorite film of the five. I saw it in IMAX 3D this time, which was interesting. The 3D wasn't as impressive as I expected it to be, for some reason.
In the last few viewings, I've noticed a few interesting little gaffes. Not canon gaffes, of course, but actual film-making-type errors.
1. Hermione mentions the OWL exams twice and pronounces it differently each time. In the scene where she's complaining about how they're not learning enough (just before the DA is formed), she pronounces it "owls". In the scene with the Trio after the kiss, when she's talking about what all Cho is worried about, she pronounces each letter: "O.W.L."
2. When Hagrid is first talking to the Trio in his hut, there is one shot where his steak is suddenly missing. It reappears in the next shot.
3. When Neville first finds the RoR, he turns toward it and you can see the prosthetics they put behind Matt's ears to make them stick out.
4. In the beginning when Dudley and Harry are running through the rain, their shirts are clearly wet, but when they get into the tunnel, their shirts are dry.
5. When Bella is behind Lucius in the DoM and says "He knows how to play", her lips aren't moving in synch with what we hear her saying.
6. During one of the scenes when Filch is putting up educational decrees, the Ravenclaw robes in the shot seem to be lined with a very light blue material. Everywhere else in the film, they're dark blue.
I could swear there were a few more, but now I can't remember them.
Other things I find interesting:
• It's hilarious that they give the temperature at the beginning in both Celsius and Fahrenheit. I don't know why that strikes me as funny, but it does.
• I love Grimmauld Place. I know a lot of people have complained that it didn't match their mental image of what it would look like, but I've been inside those sorts of houses before and it reminds me exactly of how they're laid out, especially that first narrow, claustrophbic corridor.
• Dan's acting during the scene after Arthur's attack and in the Occlumency scene is stunning. He looks so young, frail, terrified and vulnerable, and it works perfectly. The fact that he's dressed in pajamas that are too big for him just adds to that impression.
• The mysterious fat black kid from POA is all over the DA, but never has a line.
• Is Nigel taking Colin Creevey's place or something? He's a cute little kid, even if he isn't canonical.
• There's a moment in the scene with Harry and Sirius in the tapestry room where Harry's eyes flick from Sirius's eyes down to his lips and back up again. Just sayin'.
• It's interesting that Draco seems to spend most of the film glued to Pansy's side. I liked Pansy better with short hair.
• When Umbridge slaps Harry in her office, Crabbe and Goyle exchange a look of glee, but when she mentions using the cruciatus curse, they exchange a look that's almost like concern.
• Are we meant to understand that no one but Harry heard the prophecy ball when it spoke, sort of like with the sorting hat? The shot cut to the other five during the part where it would have said, "One must die at the hand of the other", and then back to Harry again for the rest of it.
• I like the fact that the RoR grew the mistletoe right over Harry's and Cho's heads. I also want it to grow over Harry and Neville when they're talking alone in the RoR a bit later on. ;-)
• Remus looked damn sexy when he apparated into the DoM. :-D

Struck me as a gratuitious pandering to American ignorance, but that's just my reaction...

Date: 2007-07-17 02:06 am (UTC)I just thought it was brilliantly done.
I'm seeing it again tomorrow, and I am going to look out for all of those mistakes you pointed out, especially the ear one, it amuses me =]
"• There's a moment in the scene with Harry and Sirius in the tapestry room where Harry's eyes flick from Sirius's eyes down to his lips and back up again. Just sayin'."
^ Haha, I'll have to watch out for that too =]
This film was so slashy! It was ridiculous. Everything was a double entendre.
One of my favorites was when Snape and Harry were together durring an Occlumency scene and then one of the first lines that was spoken was something like "We've been going at it all night!" and something slashy that followed, I just lost it.
I also found it terribly amusing when Sirius was in dog form at the train station and then he switched back into human Sirius in that room and Harry went in after him and all Sirius had on was a furry robe, haha I loved it.

Date: 2007-07-17 02:23 am (UTC)I loved the slashy moments in this, particularly the Harry/Sirius and Remus/Sirius stuff. It's been a while since I read OOTP, but in that scene in the book, didn't he wrap himself in a coat he found in the room because he was naked? I may be misremembering that...

I don't think it is the same guy. I watched closely every time.
On the other hand, Dean finally gets quite a few lines in this movie. And how he has sprouted!
I do like the little scene where the Weasley twins are comforting Nigel. It's really sweet.
By the way, what are your book plans? I haven't heard from Lisa yet, and I'm starting to get worried. I'd like to have a back-up plan in place.

i absolutely loved remus. he just looked good and, like you said, damn sexy at the DoM...

Date: 2007-07-17 03:13 am (UTC)I've heard two theories of gossip about Colin Creevy, no idea if either is correct.
1. The actor is in a punk/goth band and pictures of him goth'd out have circulated. It has been said that the filmmakers didn't want him back because of his general persona/behavior etc.
2. The actor just grew up. He looks more like Rupert in maturity now and just wasn't suitable as Colin any longer.
If either are true, it was also just decided that he was too identifiable in the role couldn't be recast so they created Nigel.

Date: 2007-07-17 03:23 am (UTC)I was also curious, did you notice that they're really playing up Ginny's magical power in this film? I mean, it seems to me as though they're making her out to be some sort of super!Ginny, magical strength wise. All her spells hit where they needed to, and were extra super duper powerful. In the DA, in the DoM... what do you think?
I also noticed a bit of foreshadowing (I think) about Draco: when the twins are leaving and doing their big escape, there's a bit when a firework is heading right towards Draco, and it leaves a "mask" of his face on the wall behind where he was standing. That mask, to me, was quite reminiscent of the D.E. masks.
So much shippiness. I was in a theater with a bunch of kids and their parents (today), but I was halfway tempted to laugh out loud at the Sirry, the R/S, the Snarry. It was *everywhere*. Loved it. :D

Date: 2007-07-17 03:33 am (UTC)I do have to say the attitude that American not knowing Celsius makes us ignorant and stupid is pretty offensive. How many can convert Celsius to Fahrenheit in their heads? It's 68˙F right now in Buffalo, what's that in Celsius? Right now! In your head! While watching a movie as you try to figure it out! ::reigns in sarcastic humor::
I also think that black kid is the same one from POA.
I want to go see it again, but I'm really saving my money for Prophecy. Maybe after I get back.

Date: 2007-07-17 03:50 am (UTC)Oooh. I didn't notice the lips thing with Harry and Sirius. I'll have to look out for that when I go see it again Friday.
I noticed the audio not syncing with the picture on screen happened a couple of times -- the time with Bella and at the end when Luna and Harry are walking through the corridor (she's hanging up signs), her lips aren't moving with one part of the speech.

Date: 2007-07-17 04:12 am (UTC)When Harry goes after Bella, and Voldie and Dumbledore appear in the corridor, Bella has her 'grand exit' - she just slides into the fireplace (I just love how she glided into it in one movement!!) and disappears (with floo network of course).
But! She didn't use floo powder.
I love Voldie's 'Huh? Oh bugger, it didn't work!!' face when he attacks Dumbledore with glass and Dumbledore shreds it into dust. :D
And I love Luciussssss! Mmmmman, Luce is sexy! How elegantly he removed that mask! Man has style! And that voice, husky voice...*drools*
One of my favorite scenes is of course battle in MoM. I was amazed and gaping at those prophecies falling from the shelves! I would be like Luna - just staring at them...like hypnotised!
Another amazing thing is how DE and Aurors moved!! Like smoke! That was awesome! That wasn't just apparation! And those kids are so obviously out of their league! They didn't know what the heck was going on!
And did you see the goat!!?? I think my friend and I were the only one laughing!
Umbridge...that woman gave me creeps. I partly hated that book because of her! Totally psychotic!
OMG, Snape!Alan Rickman was awesome! Those slashy scens..hihihi. And Luna! I loved Luna!Evanna!
What disappointed me is the scene with Sirius and Veil. It wasn't emotional as I expected it to be. I think they messed up slow-motion thing and camera position. When I was reading the book I cried, and here I just thought: 'Wait! That's it?!'
People in the cinema were applauding when Fudge came into Ministry and said: 'He's back!'. Like 'Wow, no way!' :p
I liked Dan's acting in this movie, he really improved. But I didn't like Emma. She was like she just came from marathon, all puffy and heavy breathing, overly excited.
And OMG, jeez, kissing scene. Argh. Dan has too much experience to pretend it's his first kiss *g* It lasted too long - they wanted to make it intimate, but they don't have such intimate relation for that kind of kiss. And there was no chemistry between actors.
I didn't like that they didn't put scene with mirror, no Firenze, not enough Tonks, and no rage in Dumbledore's office...well, there was a scene when Arthur was attacked, and Harry shouted at Dumbledore...I liked that!
Oh, ok, enough! Jeeez, this post is totally...frantic. I was just putting the things that crossed my mind. :D
All in all, movie was too short, they didn't put some things I really miss. One hour more would be great!
I'll leave the rest for my Lj entry, which is right now Private, so not to spoil anyone, at least for another few days. I still must gather my impressions. And I'm certainly watching the movie again and again...:D
(sorry for this longish post, but it's nice to share it with someone, and squee and rant...:D)

Date: 2007-07-17 04:34 am (UTC)I was just reading your review and found myself smiling and laughing and agreeing with a lot of the things you said. :-)
I've seen OOTP 3 times so far and I always find it funny when people laugh every single time Fudge says "He's back!" Like every single time, it's the same reaction.
Oh but: But I didn't like Emma. She was like she just came from marathon, all puffy and heavy breathing, overly excited.
I actually think that's how Hermione is in the books. Every single time Hermione gets passionate or overexcited about something, she acts like that. I always find myself thinking "Oh my, Hermione, you need to calm down a bit" heh. :-P

and i've caught a few bad edit things as well, like the fact that harry's hand is on the desk, not on the desk, on the desk in the detention scene as they cut camera angles back and forth.

Date: 2007-07-17 01:27 pm (UTC)The kid who played Creevey must have had some sort of dispute with WB. Did you see his MySpace page? It was going around a bit right before POA came out. He had the gothic/emo thing going on. Heh. So I can decide if he thought he was too cool for HP or they didn't want him.
I liked Pansy better with short hair.
I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that it's not the same girl who played Pansy in PoA. This looks like the same one that was in GoF though. I liked the first one/hair better too.
Interestingly, she was glued to Tom Felton at the UK premiere too. I don't think anyone recognized her because she wasn't signing autographs. I wasn't sure it was her (until I saw the movie) and I joked that I'd be really amused if he was dating a Pansy-look-a-like IRL.

Date: 2007-07-17 03:06 pm (UTC)Oh, is it not the same Pansy? I haven't checked the credits, but she looks enough like the other one for me not to notice the difference.

Date: 2007-07-17 02:53 pm (UTC)And I thought Grimmauld Place looked perfect, too. I was a little disappointed during the family tree scene that they didn't show his being related to the Malfoys, though--or even any mention of Regulus. I thought they might at least have a shot showing one or both of those...
