This was originally posted to [livejournal.com profile] hp_centraltx, but I know many folks are avoiding communities this week, so I'm reposting it here.

I had to cancel my trip to Sectus, and one of the things I was most looking forward to there was the reading party. The idea of reading the final HP book in a room with other fans sounded so exciting. Fandom for me is so much about sharing the experience with other fans, and the idea of reading the final HP book all alone was a little depressing.

So I will be hosting a reading party at my house in Austin this weekend!

I'll be picking my book up at midnight at Book People on Sixth Street and then heading home to start reading, and I would be happy to have people over to read, whenever they want to start. You could come at 1:00 am, 8:00 am, 1:00 pm, whatever -- anytime on Saturday. I have lots of space and places for people to sit around and read. There are several bedrooms where you could go take a nap when you need to, and I'll set aside a "spoiler room" for anyone who wants to go and talk about what they've just read.

I'll fire up the home theater system for anyone who wants to take a break and watch a movie, or for those who don't plan on binge reading. ([livejournal.com profile] phaballa is bringing the DVDs of Hex, and I have a ton of other DVDs to choose from.) I have wireless, so you can bring your laptops and keep up with what's going on on LJ, even.

We'll order in food, drink coffee, and just share the experience of reading the last book together.

If you're in the area and are interested in coming anytime on Saturday, comment here and I'll send you more information.

Wow; that's an amazing notion; I wish my apartment in NYC could be set up for such a thing.

Tiny apartments have their advantages, but not so much when you want to have people over, I suppose. ;-)

Eryn and I will see ya'll at Book People, but we're skipping out on the reading party.

I think we're gonna go back to Eryn's place, get really drunk, and then open the book to random pages and read tiny segments out loud. XD

I'm glad we'll see you at BP! What time are you planning to get there?

For the wristbands, I'm coming up to Austin thursday night and staying, then we're going to get to BP by about 7 AM Friday in order to be reasonably early in the line.

Friday night, the party starts at 10, so we'll probably show up around 9 or 10, maybe earlier. Since how early you get to the party doesn't affect when you get your book I'm not really sure.

Sounds awesome, but NJ is a bit too far away. Have a great time. I'll be busy reading and probably crying that the series is over!

Sorry you had to cancel Sectus, hope everything is OK.

I'm insanely jealous of anyone that gets to go! That sounds so fun. I'll be holed up somewhere hiding from my dh and wee ones so I can read it. Very cool. :)

It's still cool to know that everyone I know will be reading the same book at approximately the same time. :-)

No doubt. :D When we ordered it online dh asked "so do you really need it saturday, because if you do we don't get free shipping". I thought it was a really stupid question...

That is an amazing idea.

If I had something bigger than a 1-bedroom apartment, I'd be tempted to do the same. As it is, I'll wish you guys a wonderful time (and spend the night awake in Montreal reading the same book!)

You still have the comfort of knowing everyone else is reading it the same time, I suppose. :-)

you must be really bummed about having to cancel Sectus. At least you are making up for it by hosting an awesome reading party. I hope it goes well and everyone has lots of fun.

I am bummed, but it's for a really good reason, so I'm getting over it. And besides, I'm still going to Prophecy in a few weeks, so I suppose I can't complain too much. ;-)

Oh that sounds like so much fun! *wishing I lived in Austin* I suppose the only thing better about my plans is that I get the book an hour earlier. :) Anyway, I hope you all have a fab time. Don't forget to join the rest of us on the interwebs when you're finished!

Do you have any idea how much I want to get on a plane and come visit you on Friday and spend the weekend reading Deathly Hallows. It sounds like you will have a blast. Enjoy!

As for me...I'm going to the Barnes and Noble book release party with my friend Kris. I've reserved 2 copies for us. After we get our books we will probably go to a Denny's, order some food and start reading.

Awww, so cool! Sounds fantastic.

For me, it'll be: going in line to buy a book (I think the sale starts at 22:00 hrs) with my friend (who's buying the book, not me - she's taking me to hold her in case she faints or something :p) and later we go to my place, where I'll be in my room and she'll be reading the book in the kitchen. And when she's finished (she reads fast, that will be over by the morning) she leaves the book on the table for me to read and sneaks out so I don't see her face, because I WOULD KNOW.

Well, that's our plan. :D

I'm sure you'll have a good time! Don't forget to take lots of photos!!

Oh my goodness I'm so terribly tempted. I'm actually going to be up in Austin do a day late birthday celebration and then going to the book release after dinner to be entertained by everyone (and myself perhaps if I get off my butt and finish my idea). It sounds fantastic.

That sounds amazing! I'm getting a little teary-eyed just reading about it. Wish I could attend.

Hurr-rarh!

I just talked to the friend I'm going up to Austin with, if you've still got room I'd love to come and dork it out. It'd be me and one other, we can bring drinks or food or such if there's anything you can think of that such a group might need.

*wibble* that sounds so amazing! if only you meant austin, california (not that there is such a place, but the idea remains the same XD)

maybe I'll have to try and get my friends to do something similar... thank you for the idea! :D
