American Idol!
Mar. 27th, 2007 07:49 pmOkay, I almost hate to admit this, but I am starting to like Sanjaya. The kids has balls, and he sure knows how to capitalize on his assets. And you know, his singing tonight wasn't half bad! It's almost like he's just at this point where he's said "Fuck it" and is going to ride this as long as he can. And I have to respect that, seriously!

Date: 2007-03-28 05:36 am (UTC)OMG the hair. I couldn't watch his hair was so distracting. I mean really what were they thinking when they did that?

Date: 2007-03-30 10:28 am (UTC)and you know he has to know about the Howard Stern "vote for Sanjaya cuz he's the worst" thing. I dont know how he can stay on the show with any dignity when he knows that people who actually have talent are being sent home because he is getting more votes because of a prank.
But ya know, every week I watch, I think Jordin's chances are getting better and better.. from the beginning I have liked her, but have thought all along that she had no chance of winning versus the powerhouses of Melinda and Lakisha... but she is really coming into her own and she is pretty much my favorite at this point.
Oh.. and Haley... I found her version of "True Colors" to be torturous.... even worse then when the other dude covered "Time After Time" -- I think we have learned that covering Cyndi Lauper is bad... stay away from Cyndi Lauper songs. (*squee* am so excited I am going to being Cyndi is concert again in June... that's twice this year)

Date: 2007-03-30 04:35 pm (UTC)What I'm finding interesting about him is that he's seemed to make a decision to give the people who are voting for him what they want -- entertainment. He knows he's not as good as the others are, but he's taking what he has (basically a pretty face and a fun personality) and doing his best with it. And it's getting to the point that rather than finding it painful to watch, I'm finding it funny and pretty damn entertaining. If he were up there cringing at himself every night, it would be different, but he's having fun. I'm not going to vote for him, but I wasn't exactly disappointed that he didn't get voted off the other night.
The people who are getting voted off before him now wouldn't have won either, so I'm honestly not that concerned about him. At this point it seems to be a contest between Melinda, LaKisha, and Jordin (and maybe Blake). And if by some slim chance Sanjaya beat out all of them and won, what that would tell me is that the voters don't take the show seriously anymore and really just see it as entertainment. And that would, in itself, be entertaining.

Date: 2007-04-02 03:56 am (UTC)I'm not sure what you mean. What else would a show where you phone in your votes be other than an opinion poll? People vote for whoever they want, for whatever reason they want, as many times as they want. Whoever gets the least votes goes. Repeat ad nauseum. What else is it but a freaky popularity contest? I guess I thought that was the whole point. Hence sites like VFTW trying to screw up the system, to point out the obvious.
Of course, you could make an argument that all of show business works that way. The artists with the best gimmicks and marketing people are often the most successful ones, rather than the ones who are the most talented. It's just the way it seems to work. Or at least, that's how I justify the career of Britney Spears...

Date: 2007-04-02 04:23 am (UTC)Sorry, I spend way to much time on the AI boards. There are those that truly believe that their votes are the only thing keeping Mr. Malakar on the show.
I figure he's there til the producers get sick of him. Howard, et al, have no affect. Other than adding to shear numbers of votes that Seacrest can crow about on the results show. I believe the whole thing is 1000% fixed, with a predetermined winner and completely spun for drama. Sure there is talent there, and it's a great opportunity for exposure, but the ending is scripted. Some of the stuff in between may be spontaneous, but the next winner has already been picked by TPTB. :)
Doesn't mean I don't watch, because I do. And spend far too much time discussing it afterwards. *looks really embarrassed.* I'm really not trying to argue... I have far too much respect for for your writing. :)
