WTF, Idol voters??? WTF? Sanjaya's going to fucking win, isn't he? *tears hair out*

If Chris R. had been voted off, it would have been a huge Fuck You to the judges. He's not my favorite, but still, he SO did not deserve to be the second lowest vote-getter.

I didn't have any particular affinity for Stephanie, but seriously, she didn't deserve to go before Sanjaya.

*sigh*

This is the first year I've watched. Is it always this bad?

The year with Scott was pretty bad. But there was a conspiracy that some anti-AI people had, apparently. They were voting multiple times for the worst ones. Kept 'em in for a while. But nearer to the end, they couldn't keep up.

I've been watching regularly since season 3 and it seems like each year there is one contestant that for whatever reason (certainly not singing ability) keeps getting enough votes to continue on for a lot longer than they should.

There is shit like this every year. Like the person above me said, Season 4 was awful with Scott. VoteForTheWorst.com was supporting him, and now they're supporting Sanjaya.

No, he won't win. They producers won't let him.

They vote off the boring before they vote off the bad, because you actually vote FOR instead of voting OFF, so the first people who go are the ones that people just forgot to vote for. If someone really sucks and gets a tongue lashing from Simon, their fans get motivated to vote for them. So it really works more like a progressive election. Singer Q who has a very similar fan base to Singer M might be in the bottom three a few times, then once Singer M goes, Singer Q gets a bump as all those fans move over.

So all that said, there are lots of teenage girls and grandmothers who always vote for these dear little teenage boys whether they can sing or not; that part DOES happen every single year, that some young man who seems very nice but cannot sing lingers much longer than he 'should.' Peter Noone was right last night—it's NOT a singing contest; it's a performance contest. But in that, it's such a perfect replication of what actually happens on the pop charts, which is judged in the same way.

Last night Sanjaya was terrible, but being terrible is more memorable than being just sort of fine—not awesome, but not sucking. It is the bland that need to worry, which is why Simon always brings that up. If you're just eh, then no one votes for you except your hard core fans, and you fall down to the bottom. Last night Stephanie wasn't that great, and being diva #4 with an ascendant diva #3 in Jordin was just unsustainable (which is also why Sabrina didn't make it in the first place). Haley and Gina have totally different fans so they weren't as affected. Chris's problem was that he sang a song no one has heard of, and was very nice, but low energy immediately following Haley running around half naked. So people forgot, and they didn't vote.

I bet anything that Phil was the secret member of the bottom three that they just didn't reveal.

That makes sense, really. It's just all so bizarre. If I step back and think about it from a sociological perspective (as you suggest), I think I might find the whole thing a lot more enjoyable. After all, the really talented folks on the show seem to do well post-Idol, regardless of what happened on the show.

Well, it doesn't matter if Sanjaya wins because he's never going to make it. My brother watches the show religiously haha and last year, a guy named Chris Daughtry got eliminated during the top 5 or something. And he still got a record contract and he's the highest record selling idol of last year. I don't think the person who actually won American Idol last year sold nearly as much. I think voters get lazy and think that their favorites will be safe because they're so popular so they don't vote. *sigh*

Also, I've heard that the majority of Sanjaya's fans are 12 year olds so all they need is a phone and they're voting like crazy. They probably think he's really cute or something.

But if Sanjaya doesn't go soon I think the remaining contestants will push him off a bridge or something. Did you see the look on all their faces, especially Chris Sligh, when they realized he was safe again? Notice how no one patted him on the back or said congratulations? Yeah, even the contestants want him gone.

Yeah, that made me spit out my coffee. Guess how old my daughter is? Guess who she voted for a couple weeks ago?

But, to be fair to her, she really just thinks he's cute and adorable (which he is), but she doesn't believe he should still be in the competition. In fact, that one week she voted for him, it was only because she kept trying to get through to vote for someone else, and only could get the busy signal. Sanjaya's line was the only one she could get through on.

The thing is, when the lines open for voting, it is bedtime at our house. I'll only allow a certain amount of time for her to sit there trying to vote! Early on, when you like more than one contestant, if you simply can't get through on their line, you'll vote for someone else. I'm wondering just how prevalent that is. If that's a problem that a lot of people experience, then there are folks getting votes who really don't deserve them.

it's not usually quite this bad, though I don't pay a whole lot of attention until it gets down to fewer people. The problem is that everyone votes for their fav and not "vote off the person who really bombed", so the votes get split several ways and it's all wonky and stuff...

This is the first year I've watched. Is it always this bad?

Well, I didn't start watching until Season Four (Carrie Underwood, et al), but I'd say no, it totally isn't always this bad. I don't think I've ever been this irritated with the voting before. I wish we could vote people off, rather than voting to keep them on. I actually stopped voting after the first year I watched it because I hate their voting system so much.

Plus, there's also vote for the worst (http://www.votefortheworst.com/), and they're putting all their support behind Sanjaya. They were apparently even talking about it on Howard Stern's show, so it's gotten non Internet publicity this year. I checked out the site after the travesty that was last week's results show, and their object was to get him into the Top 10 so that he would go on the Idols Tour this summer. Now that that's been achieved, hopefully they'll chill out and he'll go home next week. Or not, ugh. (http://www.votefortheworst.com/node/208)

And I so agree with you wrt Chris R. He wasn't amazing, but he should have been far away from the bottom two. Frankly, I was expecting Phil to be there again this week.

Don't worry, he won't win. He will probably last until about the middle however. There's been a contestant like Sanjaya every season: bad singer but *something* that's a hook. As others have indicated, the boring always go before the bad. And Sanjaya was just so entertaining this week. It really was hilarious. I feel bad for Stephanie but she didn't stand out.

This is only my second year watching... but their was an equally akward and talentless "cute teenager" on last year that people dubbed "chicken-little"...

I think Stephanie's problem was she tried to really oversing every song... too much Beyoncification... it just distracts from the song. -- I really though Haley would have been gone by now, but suprisingly she has gotten better... I really liked Gina, but I prety much think she hasn't been that good the past few weeks.. pity.

The bald army guy that looks like an elfen cancer patient needs to go....

If it really were just talent and stage presence that were the only issues, it would be a close race between Jordin, Lakisha, and Melinda.... I like Blake's style, but I just dont think his voice is that strong.
