Hey you Americans, Planned Parenthood is running a campaign to test pharmacies to see if they'll let women buy emergency contraception (EC), which is available over-the-counter. As you probably know, some pharmacies refuse to carry EC because they think it's a form of abortion -- which it isn't (proving how little these asshats know about human reproduction and when embryos implant in the uterus), but even if it were, abortion is still legal.

If you volunteer to help out, they'll give you specific instructions to follow and you will pick a pharmacy (or several, if you want) in your area to test. You'll basically go to the pharmacy and try to buy emergency contraception (EC), then report how it went back to PP. If you have any trouble, PP is going to take action to pressure that pharmacy to make EC available. They're targeting stores like Wal-Mart that have been problematic in the past. (Note that you don't actually have to purchase EC, which is kind of expensive -- the goal is to see if you could buy it.)

To sign up, go HERE. I'm signed up to test four pharmacies at Wal-Marts and Targets close to my house. Come join the fun!

You, American people, are making the world stare in your direction, gaping, and it is usually about something profoundly stupid. No offence. Take the whole abortion/EC issue. I mean, seriously. One would think that the government of one of the great powers of the day would have more serious stuff to bicker over than the right of abortion, and just leave the women decide for themselves.

This is ridiculous. I'm a doctor, but no, I won't treat you, because you are smoking and I think this is a vile habit. Next!

I signed up for a Target Pharmacy near my house. I only signed up for one, cos I don't know how to drive so getting around can be a pain in the ass for me. Thanks for letting us know about this. :)

Awesome! After looking over the materials, it seems like you can probably do it over the phone. Hmmm...

So... you can do this even if you have no money? Because I'd love to help, but I'm afraid they'd be all, "sure! That's $xx!" and I'd have to be "um.. well that was a test. Sorry!"

Yeah, pretty much. Or you can do it over the phone, I think, and act like you're going to com in to get it.

How old do you need to be? It doesn't say on the signup page, but it probably is a reasonable factor... Am I right in thinking that you DO NOT need parental consent to buy EC?

It says in there somewhere that you have to be 18, and that they might ID you. So if you're under 18, you'd probably have to get a parent to go with you. I don't know that for sure, so I'd suggest you email PP (at the address on the web page linked above) and ask.

I could dress up in drag and go to Wal-Mart and try to purchase some. Just to give you a mental image think Devine/Harvey Fierstein in Hairspray, BIG red hair, leopard print top with matching wrap, a fux fur leopard print handbag and simple black pumps.

Yes Anna Minerva-MacGonnagal is truly a vision

Errrm... the whole concept of mpreg escapes me. I just don't get the fascination with it. I'm of the gay man/lesbian let's make a baby mind set.

A few weeks ago it was with great relief that I found out I was more than able to purchase EC from my local Walgreens. Thank goodness. It was like $45.00, but still cheaper than raising a child or getting an abortion!

I don't know if I can sign up due to time restrictions, etc., but I can certainly fond out of my Target carries EC. I'll just go ask the pharmacist at work tonight. I bet I can even find out if there's a corporate policy about it.

I had a nice chat with one of our pharmacists on Sunday. Apparently, all Targets should stock EC. Target does allow pharmacists with religious objections to refuse to dispense certain meds as long as there is someone else available to fill the prescription, but that doesn't apply to EC. It's not a prescription med, just an OTC that's not kept on the shelves. Someone who thinks EC is a chemical abortion can ask a tech to get it for a guest, or grab any passing team member for that matter. EC is no different than the diabetic supplies or ephedrine products that are kept back there, so anybody can get it if ti came down to that. There's not any reason a woman shouldn't be able to get EC at any Target, so yay for that.

Ah, good to know! Apparently PP is targeting Target (*snerk*) because people have reported having trouble in some stores.
