Sometimes the best response to asshattery is to do something nice for someone. kungfooqueen, you rock. My faith in fandom, had it wavered, would have been restored by that.

Of course, I've learned by now that the asshats really are in the minority. Most of us are nice, genuine, friendly folks, and we want fandom to be fun for everyone. Thank the Force for that. :-)

arrmaitee really wasn't trying to be an asshat. He was stupid and didn't think it through, but he wasn't being DELIBERATELY cruel. He's apologized in three different venues (and gotten snarked at each time). I think it's lovely that kungfooqueen is doing this for ravingraven, but I think arrmaitee has been beaten up enough. (I know, you didn't mention him by name, but is there anyone out there who isn't aware of this particular wank by now?) He *is* a nice, genuine, friendly person, and he really did think he was doing something fun and different. He's sworn off fic exchanges, which is a bit of a shame, because he's got quite a good sense of humor and writes seriously funny crack!fic.

I don't know him, but I read the fic and followed what happened afterward. I also read his snarky post that was quickly deleted, and he seemed anything but apologetic. I don't know how anyone could read that author note and not see it as deliberately cruel and mocking. At the very least, he missed the entire point of what a fic exchange is about. If he's sworn off exchanges, that's probably for the best.

I'm sorry if you think that's unreasonable, but life is too short for me to feel like I have to deal with people who do things like that. I have no desire to. Fortunately, I doubt our paths will cross, so it won't be an issue.

The guys are cowardly asshats, and an empty apology doesn't change that.

I'm sorry, but he didn't apologize right after. He made fun of her, got wanked and then apologized. That carries no honor in it, because it's coerced. It's empty and just a way to try to avoid consequences and have nice people like you making excuses for them.

Apparently he does, since he only apologized after being treated like that. I'm sure he's a very nice guy, usually, but some people need to be told they're doing something wrong very forcefully before they recognize it. :shrugs: Nobody's perfect, but I'm glad there were consequences for him, as there are for everyone.
