emmagrant01: (ROTS)
[personal profile] emmagrant01
I spent more than 12 hours yesterday doing something I'd meant to do for a long time, but somehow had never done: watching all six Star Wars movies on the same day. Cinemax has been playing them on a loop all weekend, so I started yesterday morning with ROTJ, and ended after midnight with ESB. And then got up again this morning and put the TV back on Cinemax to keep watching.

And wow, it was really, really interesting. There are so many things I now see in the OT films that look different after watching the prequels. For example: Vader's search for Luke in ESB. Why does he go after Luke's friends to lure him into a trap? He knows Luke was being trained by Obi-Wan, and for all he knows, Luke was raised by Obi in the old traditions and wouldn't have attachments to others. I'd like to think Vader was thinking of himself there -- the best way for someone to lure him into a trap would have been to go after Padme. And that's why he tortures Han, because he knows Luke will respond to seeing his friends suffer. That was exactly how Palpatine seduced Anakin, after all -- by tormenting him with fears that Padme would suffer and die. It worked for Anakin, so it seems to be a reasonable assumption that it would work for Luke. (And more than a little slashy, even though I've never really been into Han/Luke so much.)

It's also interesting how emo I get watching these films. There are so many moments that make me cry, even though I know them well enough to recite the dialogue along with the actors. When Anakin slaughters the children at the Temple, when Order 66 starts, and when Luke reaches out to Leia through the Force (in ESB), I get choked up. I get chills when Yoda says, "Your father he is" in ROTJ, and when Obi-Wan says, "Anakin is the father, isn't he?" in ROTS. I'm on the edge of my seat during all the lightsaber battles (especially in the prequels because they're so damn good), and I cheer every time the good guys win the battle. And I think ROTS is my favorite of the six, I really do. Maybe it's because it brings the whole story together, or maybe because it's so fucking angsty -- but I love it. I love how it shows us that Anakin really did become a Jedi, and that he wasn't easy to turn, but that in the end he did it for what he thought were the right reasons. And knowing that it will be Luke who redeems him someday, who will truly be the "chosen one" who will fulfill that prophecy that Anakin never could -- that makes it an amazing story. Edit: Just watched the scene at the end of ROTJ where Vader kills Palpatine, and wow -- that scene is SO much more powerful now, after knowing Anakin's story. It's somehow all the more meaningful now.

And you know, I can no longer watch that scene at the end of ROTJ, where Vader/Anakin dies, without thinking of this scene from Chasing Amy.

And while I'm at it, here's a hilarious video of Kevin Smith at Comic-Con. In the first few minutes, he slashes Spiderman, and it gets better from there. "Are you willing to suck cock for your dreams? We all gotta start somewhere. You could start on your knees."

Hm, I don't know about that. I mean, Luke was pretty much grown up when he met Obi-Wan for the first time - and was taught by him. He wasn't raised by Obi-Wan so whatever he told him at that age - Luke still grew up a normal boy, and would form attachments just like any other would.

Hmmm... I think you may have misunderstood what I wrote there. I said that Vader doesn't know how Luke was raised, and he might have assumed that Obi-Wan raised Luke himself in the same way that Luke would have been raised at the Temple. Vader didn't even know Luke existed until ANH at the earliest, so he'd have no clue where Luke had come from. He didn't know Luke had only just met Obi-Wan. He didn't even know Obi-Wan was still alive.

I'd have loved to see Harry/Peter on screen...

Kevin Smith videos are amazing! The one about Tim Burton cracked me up.

I watch the first three movies every year on New Year's Eve with my husband. We do recite the dialog. *g*

I loved TPM, but I never could see the other two more than once. The second one, we fast forwarded through a lot of. And the last one was a nice tie-in, but really too sad to watch more than once.

I loved parts of TPM, but other parts I didn't like so much. The film that got me into the SW fandom again was AOTC, actually. There are parts of that I dislike immensely (every bit of Padme/Anakin dialogue, for example), but overall, I adore the film. Oddly enough, I wasn't sure how I felt about ROTS right after I first saw it in the theater. It had to grow on me. But now, I love it. :-)

SW (the first one, circa 1977) is one of my all time favorite movies. I stood in line for hours to see it when it first came out. I have the movie poster over my fireplace. *g*

But TPM was all about Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon for me. The rest of the movie...well, it was okay, too.

those clips are insane

my friends and i have been meaning to do all 6 in a row since before ROTS came out (we were meant to watch TPM and AOTC, go see ROTS and then do the OT), and we still haven't *sigh*

this has absolutely nothing to do with star wars (although i do love star wars!) but i am going to say it here anyway. i don't exactly know why i feel the need to tell you this except that i friended you like forever ago and have read a lot of your recent fic but had never read "left my heart" until last night. for whatever reason i just couldn't get into the premise but as silly as it sounds i started to feel guilty that i hadn't read it yet because everyone is always saying how great it is and so last night i finally decided to just get over myself and give it a go. and i stayed up very late reading it all. suffice it to say, i really enjoyed it. and i saw something about the final version of "surrender the grey" not coming out until december? so by december, you mean like midnight on december 1st, right? how different is it from the one that's already posted? should i go ahead and read what's already there, or should i wait? anyhow, i'm sorry i waited so long to read it, but i'm glad i finally did and i think it's really good and all the accolades it has received are well deserved.

Thank you! I'm glad you finally decided to give LMH a try. :-)

The final version of STG is waiting for my holiday exchange fics to get done. I've revised it and my betas have given me feedback, and the next thing to do is work in their comments. It's not changing a heck of a lot. A few scenes were extended, and some characterization issues were smoothed out. I plan to have it done by Christmas.

I love Obi. I really need to watch all 6 movies in a row sometime;)

My dear, your inner geek is just raging! LOL

I just remember having this revelation during The Clone Wars, when all the parts of the first 3 movies fell into place and it all made sense. It was a very Star Wars geek moment.

When the very first movie came out the debate amongst all the gay boys was who was hotter; Luke or Han.

Oh, man -- it's amazing. The scene at the beginning of ANH when Luke and Obi are talking in Obi's house is just full of little moments that read completely differently. For example, there's this look on Obi's face after he watches the message from Leia where he sits back and strokes his beard, and then looks at Luke, and it's like the wheels are turning in his head. Yoda said at the end of ROTS that they would remain hidden until the time was right, and that was the moment Obi decided the time was right to come out of hiding, at long last. I had tears streaming down my cheeks, I tell you.

Oh, and Vader is constantly going on about the power and sanctity of the Force in ANH, something that really stands out to me now in a way it didn't before. I guess I see him as Anakin now, and every time I look at him, everything I know about Anakin is in my mind. He's not just an evil guy anymore; he's a character I have a lot of feeling for.

Gah. I could go on and on.

I...am severely disturbed by your icon. It may take me a while to recover.

On the other hand, damn if I don't love Kevin Smith something fierce. he's one of the people I started loving because my brother loved him, and when I was younger, I wanted to be like him, with the quick wit and the older...ness. Anyway, I still love the filthy smarmy bastard because he's just so real. A man who can rag on his own film as well as he can is amazing.

This is probably why my roommate thinks I am in love with half of Hollywood. Well, that and my intense appreciation for the pretty.

I believe that guy's in Denmark somewhere, lol.

What I want to know is--- what happens to the QAJ universe now? Y'know, I stole the Plo Koon from there and had him fall for Quinlan. Come back to the GFFA, Emma. You know you want to.

From: [identity profile] emmagrant01.livejournal.com
Mmm, Quinlan! I have SW fics I'd love to write, but the problem is only about four people would actually want to read them. I would love to write between-the-trilogies stuff, especially with Ferus Olin and Obi-Wan. Ferus/Han has certainly crossed my mind. Maybe some young Luke/Biggs... ;-)
