[livejournal.com profile] snapetoy posted pictures and a video of kangaroos in her yard, which probably seems utterly mundane to the Aussies on her flist, but totally amazing to me. And then I thought hey, I could post pics and a video of a weird-looking animal very common in my part of the world.

And so I present: The Armadillo.

Most commonly seen dead and squashed on the roads of Texas, these bizarre little creatures are generally nocturnal. But as you see in these pics, they are often out and about at dawn, rooting through your grass for worms and bugs. This one was in my back yard one morning last spring.

And here's video!

What are your weird animals? Got pictures?

Radioactive Turkeys

Hahaha. I don't actually have any pictures of this year's batch yet. But yes, my mother breeds fowl and keeps them in our garden for far too long. Last year she got turkeys for the first time. They were really tame and friendly, but that's not such a good feature in a bird that is enormous and gobbles terrifyingly. Every time I left the house they chased me looking like they wanted to eat me, and one morning I woke up and they were all hunched on my bedroom window ledge (on the first floor of the house!) staring in at me.

I called them 'radioactive' because they were enormous and reminded me of the freakish huge radioactive seagulls we have here in Aberdeen that I swear to god could carry a cat off if they wanted to.

Horrible, horrible birds. Their only redeeming feature is that they were so damn tasty.
