Not that I'm complaining, but did I blink and miss the moment when the right-wingers lost their collective grip on American politics?

Federal Marriage Amendment defeated in the House today (it was defeated in the Senate back in June, but now it's really dead).

Senate OKs expansion of stem cell research today, though the Shrub plans to veto it, despite the overwhelming majority by which it passed.

It gives you hope that they can 'attempt' to do something right (killing the Federal Marriage Amendment anyway)... though it's beyond me how it made it that far anyway.

I know -- I really don't understand why there was even an attempt to write discrimination into our constitution in this day and age. :-P

I have noticed that the media has kept very quiet about this issue. I think thet were told not to draw attention to it so that they could sneak it by the american public. Luckily our legislature is still doing their job and protecting us from crap like that. I was shocked when nobody even mentioned it back in June! They didn't want to rile anybody up because they knew that if they made a big argument over it, they would lose. In the end, people will always vote to preserve freedom and not limit it.

And that really gives me so much hope!

Funny, I've never heard of heat making people more rational. So you're suggesting that maybe global warming is a good thing? ;-)

Actually, I think the heat just makes them SO irrational that they wind up being the opposite of irrational...ergo, they are temporarily rational. ;)

I don't know why people bitch about global warming. After all, everyone goes to the beach for vacation. ;)

I think they're in shock over their "leader" doing grossly stupid things to European leaders like this:

i don't think anything shocks us about him anymore, unfortunately.

'altho' the G8 shit is providing plenty of fodder for laughs, tho.

'is this [mic] on?'

yes, mr. president -- it is.

Why doesn't that man have a handler?

I hadn't seen that but given but I guess it shouldn't be surprising.

Bush has a real problem with respect. He refuses to even call anyone by their proper name, much less use their title; he gets pissy when the press dare question him; and he talks down to the American people in general.

I think the other world leaders should start calling him Georgie and see how he likes it.

About the marriage amendment: indeed it's dead, as it should be. Even the most 'average bear' American sees through it; these Senators and congressmen and women don't really care about same-sex marriage - they don't stand for anything, least of all 'traditional family (values)'. They hop on the bandwagon and take the conservative (popular) side on hot button issues as an election year ploy.

And, yeah, he's crowing about a veto - I hope we get the 2/3 to override the veto, if it comes to that.

Yeah baby! This is good news! Veeeery good news!

The thing is, no matter how the repubs. attempt to repress it, the world is accepting gay marriage. They will eventually have to accept it, no matter what. May as well be sooner than later. And if it pisses off that yokel that currently resides in the White House, then all the more reason to be for it!

And don't even get me started on stem cell research. The thing that I don't understand is, there are stem cells in umbilical cords. Considering how many children are born every year in the States and Canada alone, the "taking something alive and making it dead" statement would be rendered a moot point.

Ahh those right wingers. What a group of wicky wacky folks!

I was actually watching a bit of the Senate proceedings for the stem cell research. From what I saw before my brother stole the remote, most of the republicans actually were for it, except a few like this one guy from Kansas who got his argument torn to pieces by the next guy who spoke. I was very happy.

Sorry to leave an off-topic comment, but I understand you're looking for an artist for your crack panel?

I got a heads up from [livejournal.com profile] furiosity. Some of my work is here and here:

I would be interested in discussing this with you. :D
