I'm slowly converting my longer fics into eBooks, so that people can download them and keep them in an easy-to-use format.  eBooks are just electronic versions of books, basically. To read an eBook on your computer or PDA, you just need to download an eBook reader such as Microsoft Reader, which can be downloaded for free from here. (ETA: [livejournal.com profile] tsosh also recommends Foxit reader, which is a smaller program -- though does that just work with PDF files? These are LIT files, so I'm not sure. I haven't tried.) A cool feature MS Reader is that it includes a voice reader that will read your eBooks to you. So if you've ever wondered what Steven Hawkings would sound like reading porn, here's your chance. Whenever possible, I've included art with the fics and have created covers for the different formats.

If you're interested in downloading some of my fics, please go to my eBook directory here.  :-D

If you're interested in learning how to convert your own fics into this format, let me know and I'll throw together a little how-to post.  It's not hard at all, especially if you already have your fics in MS word files.  And I'd like to have porn for my PDA, so it would be cool to see more people do this!

Yeah, I'd like to learn. I'm not really popular enough to need to know, but it would still be interesting.

Perfect timing!

I've been gathering up long fics to load on the PDA for the trip to Vegas this week and this was one I wanted.

Do you have Surrender the Grey archived somewhere in one long document?

Thanks!

STG: Not yet! I'm almost done with revisions, and then it will go off to betas, and then the final version should be ready to be posted September 1. I'm almost finished with it. :-P

That's a wonderful idea!

if you've ever wondered what Steven Hawkings would sound like reading porn - LOL. That's exactly what it sounds like.

BTW - for people who doesn't like Microsoft or Adobe Acrobat reader - Foxit Reader (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php) is also good, and more importantly, small program.

I have no idea. But they're .lit files, which I think require MS reader. If your PDA runs windows, you probably already have it.

Actually, as far as I know, MS Reader only works with Pocket PCs, not Palm PDAs. There´s a neat software that lets you convert .lit files to almost any format. I´m currently using the 30-day trial to convert some files and it works great. It can be downloaded at: http://www.processtext.com/abclit.html

You may want to post the link for people who uses Palm devices or computers that run something that isn´t Windows. Or, if you want, I could mail you the converted files, to the format you want, and you can post them.

The sad thing is that eBook reader isn't compatible with my PDA, but I've already fics on it in plain html, which works just as well for me.

From: [identity profile] emmagrant01.livejournal.com
Yeah, html works too. I think all PDAs that run Windows come with MS Reader. I haven't read fics on my PDA before, but I'm hoping to start soon. :-)

There was a time when Microsoft was 'experimenting' with their mobile version of Windows, and OEM companies were allowed to develop their own inhouse reader, and my 2 year old PDA has some stupid reader on it that won't read Adobe eBooks, or microsloth eBooks, which totally makes it entirely useless in that respect. Grrr, arrgh! Still, it plays a mean game of Bejewelled, which is all that matters in the waiting lounge and on the plane!

Don't use a Windows only propriatary format! The makes it impossible for Macintosh and Linux users (like myself) to enjoy you works in this form. Also, what if 1000 years from now all existant copies of your work, except these ebooks, have vanished, and no one knows how to read them because Microsoft never released the specifications? That would be tragic loss to humanity! Think of the children...

Did I prompt this just a little? Anyway, yayyy! I convert most people's fics into eBooks myself, but it's always nice to see authors doing it to their own specifications!

Yes, actually. And people have been asking me for ages to post some fics in a download-friendly format, so I sort of put the two together. :-)

Yes, it's a bit of a pain -- especially if you're going from html.

html is a pain

It is horrible from html. My recommendation: far easier and faster from MSWord (.doc) though. The plug-in can be downloaded from their site, I'm shure you have it already. I usually use Arial 14 because it's easy to read.

been there, done that

LOL ... I've actually converted LMH ages ago in .lit-format in order to be able to re-read it on the train. But of course it's far better if you do it yourself as an author. Looking forward to the final version of the second part - I've made a .lit-file out of your draft before. It kept me awake for a boring ride over a few hours. :)

BAH! You and your ebooks!

Any idea (and I haven't read through comments so forgive me if this has been answered, just point me the right way? If there's a mac version of said program?

However my secret, I copied and pasted all of LMH in May because I have limited internet when I'm not at school and I wanted a good (re)read. For personal use only, I assure you. Anyhow, the formating and so forth in an ebook has got to be better than a sloppy cut and paste job, lol. :-)
