Oh, that was great! I think what is so amazing about SW is that literally anything is possible. You want your Jedi to have two penises and a self-lubing rectum and the ability to conceive a child? No problem -- just make him a member of a species with those characteristics. My thoughts precisely. Wonder if there's one of those hanging around in a fic somewhere? *goes to look*

LOL, there must be a fic like that! ;-)

i know i usually have alot of 'howevers' with your opinions, but let me say, your anti-top/bottom categorizing ways are spot -the fuck - on. brava!

great interview.

i believe i've told you that beren's story Corruption was the first fanfic i ever read, with a Charlotte Chaos being next (the one where Snape has been inappropriate with Draco), and then LEFT MY HEART being the third... not including the sequel, Transfigurations was my next one... and I agree with you, it's one of the few stories that I tend to go back and read, even now...

it was nice getting a glimpse at one of my fave fanfic authors!

:)

PS --> about your computer.... did you do a clean install of your Operating System? UNless you have a rootKit virus (which is unlikely because they hackers nowadays don't really know how to write them), a clean install totally wipes your hard drive clean of everything and re-installs the OS. That should take care of any virus. Also, your RAM may be failing. You can get new RAM that would be cheaper than getting a new comp.

(which could also explain the memory leak in mozilla that we talked about before)

i know you said you got it looked at and fixed, but most places that do that simply reboots in safe mood, does a viral sweep, spyware sweep, and then registry cleaning... and then charges you upwards of $50 to do it... but bothRAM replacement and clean installs are more drastic measures that most places won't even ask if they can do it because most people will say no...

That was such a great interview. I loved what you said about the top/bottom issue, it was so right on.

My only criticism of the SW fandom is that it seems to have a high propensity for OTPism. People tend to read or write one pairing and aren’t really interested in venturing outside of their zone of comfort, often to the point of making disparaging comments about other pairings and the people who read and write them. This is something I haven’t found to be true in HP, perhaps because the fandom is so much bigger.

I think you're probably right about that. Back when I first came to the hp fandom, like 5 and a half years ago, there was a lot more OTPism. There were these huge ship wars where all of the R/Hr, H/Hr, and H/G people would insult each other. It got pretty vicious. That seems to have gone away a bit as hp fandom has gotten bigger.

Being a fan is something I’ve always felt compelled to hide, because it’s still regarded as a rather geeky thing by most people out there. And let’s face it -- I’m an adult who writes gay-themed erotica about characters from a children’s book. It would take quite a lot of explaining before most people wouldn’t find that a bit disturbing!

That's exactly how I feel. Almost no one in my RL knows I read fanfiction. It just seems so dorky and weird. I just don't think most people would get it.

I think the size of a fandom does have a lot to do with how welcome the fringe folks feel. If there are ten of you into a pairing, it can feel pretty lonely, but in a fandom the size of HP, the odds are there there are several hundred of you.

Thanks for reading it! :-)

Great interview Emma. It is thanks to LMH that I found and stayed in this fandom. You deserve all the accolades. And you did pretty well with the weekly updates to StG, except when pesky old RL would rear its ugly head!

And I completely agree with you on the top/bottom issue. Very well said.

Eeeep! I'm simultaneously thrilled and embarassed by the number of times you mention or quote me. Though if I was every interviewed, I'd mention and quote you a lot, too. *smoochies*

But here's what I'm shocked to learn: I haven't heard of this story "Whither Kigali"?!?!? How in the world can you have written a story that I didn't know about?

You are such a huge influence on me, you know! It's hard not to talk about my fandom experience and not mention you. :-)

Whither Kigali is here (http://community.livejournal.com/toilntrouble/11752.html). It's extremely short, barely more than a drabble, so I was really surprised that they mentioned it!

Well, I loved the interview. You are a very well spoken person, who has the ability to put into words so many great things that I also believe in. I am not kissing up to you or anything but, I surely wish I could be as articulate as you are.
The other thing that got me all happy was the fact that you mention some other long stories you are working on, there is nothing better in this world than a good long post-hogwarts story being written by the Emma.
Cheers, kisses and hugs!

Great interview. I agree wholeheartedly on the top/bottom issue, it's something that has bugged me for a long time and needed to be said.

I was also thrilled to hear you are a Transfigurations fan. I love that fic. It was the first long H/D I read and made me realize what can be done with that pairing. I think most H/D fans forever have a special place in their hearts for the first H/D epic they read.

Yes, Transfigurations was totally my gateway fic! I ♥ it so much. :-)

I loved reading what you had to say about tops and bottoms, very interesting and I couldn't agree more. One of things I like about slash is that there tends to be more equality between characters. However in some fics I've read one character tends to be described as very effiminate (and very OOC), in both their behaviour and appearance, while he other is very dominant and mascaline. It's almost like reading a het fic. (Nnot that I think all het fics present men and women in sterotypical ways.) Uhh, not sure if that made any sense, heh.

Also, wow, I would so love a copy of that book! I've thought for a while now that it would be so amazing if there was a big book of all the classic H/D fanfic stories including LMH and STG, complete with illustrations. =)

Date: 2006-04-07 03:32 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] emmagrant01.livejournal.com
I do understand what you're saying, absolutely. And I agree -- one of the cool things about slash is that the two people are completely equals, and there are no traditional gender dynamics to get in the way. It's fascinating to think about relationships in that sort of "idealized" setting.

Thanks so mcuh for reading the interview!

Eee, EmmaEmmaEmma! The book! The BOOK! That's asldkjfa;lskjdf awesome. &hearts.

And I loved what you had to say about top vs. bottom. Too often we associate the details of that sexual act with the concepts of "sub vs. dom," and they're not synonymous. Most relationships don't HAVE sub vs. dom. Except in my storyverse.
