Awww, my comment didn't seem to post over there, so I'll have to try to remember what I said.

First thing, who the hell is Tom Felton?

Second thing. Now, I consider myself to be an open-minded person, but I just really have to say I HATE third-person present tense! Bleaugh!!! Ick!!! You're right. I was probably better off not knowing.

Dearest, if you *must* write in pervie third-person present tense, then go ahead. Just so long as it doesn't interfere with the production of QAJ, which while it is in present tense, at least has the decency to do it in first person.

But you really should have your head examined. :D

PS With regard to your JF icon -- I stand by my earlier statement. You are *SO* very much way more cuter than the other Emma Grant.

First thing, who the hell is Tom Felton?

Ah, well... he's the actor who plays Draco Malfoy. See, it started as a Harry/Draco thing. Yeah.

I HATE third-person present tense!

Really? Why? I haven't got much of an opinion on it, I suppose. The reason why I chose it was that a lot of the RPS I've read is written in that style, so I figured I'd give it a shot. *shrugs*

Actually, isn't "Slacker" written that way? Hmmm...

Just so long as it doesn't interfere with the production of QAJ, which while it is in present tense, at least has the decency to do it in first person.

*snort* I absolutely love the fact that QAJ is all in first person present tense! It's so interesting for me, as a writer, to tell a story in that way. I'm not sure anyone else has written so much that way before. Oh, and speaking of, there may be a draft coming your way tonight!

You are *SO* very much way more cuter than the other Emma Grant.

*blush* Awww, gee... When I made a naked icon of myself, I really didn't expect to get compliments about it. I thought it was funny, mostly!

Back to work...

I kinda figured Tom Felton must be Draco, knowing your sick, twisted mind. But I wasn't sure. Maybe he might have been Neville. Hey, does anyone write any Harry/Neville? *SIGH* Neville. My hero!

As to why I hate 3rd pers present -- it's just so jarring. It seems to stand out. For some reason I notice it less when it's in first person. But whenever I've read 3rd pers present, it always bothers me. I think "The God of Small Things" was also written in present tense, which was one of the reasons why I struggled with that book.

And maybe lots of RPS is written that way because of the Evil Influence of Ruth and Hilary? It drove me nuts in "Slacker." I really don't think anything whatsoever is gained by using it, and it only disrupts my ability to get into the story. But other people may see it differently. Really, though, why write that way? Other than to be different?

Hmm. Maybe we should start another discussion on MA.

*grin* Oh, yeah, sick and twisted -- that's me, all right!

Yeah, I *have* read some Harry/Neville, but I can't seem to remember where. It's fairly rare, I think. Neville certainly came into his own in OotP, didn't he?

Hmmm... good question. I guess I don't have any reason *not* to. One of the things I like about it is that it feels very in-the-moment, the same way that first person present feels. In this ficlet, I wanted to capture that sense of awkwardness that I imagined the character would feel in that situation. I thought 3rd person present did the job effectively.

Now that I think about it, it might not work so well in something longish. I mean, you can't be "in the moment" for long without it feeling a bit weird. In first person, that doesn't seem to be a problem, though.

Sounds like a good topic for a discussion to me!

Hey, does this count as my first flame? *grin*

Hey, don't forget, this is the guy that stood up to all three of them in "Sorcerer's Stone." AND he won Gryffyndor the house cup for it! I've always loved Neville. I thought it was so cool that he had the same birthday as Harry, and he might have been the hero instead. I foresee that Neville will do Great Things in future books. Dear old Neville. I always knew he had it in him.

Hey, does this count as my first flame? *grin*

Who, me? When I said how your ass is so much cuter than TOEG (The Other Emma Grant)? Though I suppose I *did* call your use of the present tense "pervie..." (Come to think of it, is that spelled right? Or should it be "pervy?" But then, isn't it a mark of a true flame that it employs bad spelling?)

But then, isn't it a mark of a true flame that it employs bad spelling?

*laughing* It sure is on the HP lists, let me tell you. Of course, most of those writers, I swear, are still in high school.

Remember when you said that HP is the SW for the generation born after 1980? I really think you're right about that!

I was re-reading this ficlet this morning, and I realized that I *switched* from 3rd person present to 3rd person past about halfway through! :^P I never noticed it yesterday! Where is my brain?

Anyway, I decided to change the whole thing to past tense, as that seemed easier than converting the second half to present tense. And now I'm curious -- what do you think, since I've eliminated the annoyance factor?
