I have no words. I don't know what to say. Because this bill would affect ME if I lived in that state. My 15-year-old unmarried cousin can accidentally get pregnant and have a baby no problem, but *I* would be required to get some sort of certification (possibly including a check of whether I go to church or not??) before I qualify for medical assistance to get pregnant???

Fuck you, fuckers. FUCK YOU.

Heard this on NPR on my way home yesterday and almost crashed into the car in front of me I was so angry! This makes just about as much sense to me as Florida saying that gay couples cannot adopt. Stupid fucking church bound moralists who want to impose their idiotic idea of what can be considered a "family" on someone else.

Since I'm close to Indiana (I live just north of Chicago), I'm going to see what I can do to get the hell over there and protest this.

I'm not that suprised, actually. I live in Indiana and in order to qualify to get married, the female must have a complete, for lack of a better term, inspection before the couple can apply for a marriage certificate. Not only that, you have to wait a month after you have the certificate before you get married. It also is very expsensive. Meanwhile, the male has to have absolutely no medical examination.

And that is why I got married in Tennessee.

And as someone who lives here, local Republicans give a bad name to the Republican party. I'm one, but I personally think that's a load of bullshit.

Just the fact that any state would even remotely consider such a bill is frightening. When I read the book "The Handmaid's Tale" back in the mid-'80s, I remember feeling hugely relieved that the events described in the book could never occur. Why, we were just far too enlightened a society to accept and approve of such repression!

Now I'm not so sure. I am fervently grateful that I came of age during the sexually liberal, pre-AIDS 1970's. I never, NEVER thought that all the freedoms I took for granted could someday be reversed.

I no longer agree with anything the government proposes. Anything. I despair.

I cannot believe what I just read. Possibly one of the most intrusive frightening things I have ever read. Why add more grief to people who suffer through the agony of infertility? If you haven't lived with it you can never EVER understand what it is like. The state has no business asking about religion, in fact it is ILLEGAL. Don't they realize that if people need to have infertility treatments and shoulder the burden and expense then they actually WANT children? That these people will, most likely, love and care for the children better that the teen who gets pregnant. Stupid, moranic, fuckers. Stay the hell out of things you have no right to meddle in.

Yes. God, yes. This reminds me of that proposed bill in VA last year where the fuckwit representative wanted women who had miscarriages to report them to the police. How fucking insensitive can you be?

God forbid we should try to take care of the children who are already out there living in bad situations. Hey, let's cut funding for medical care and day care for children of poor families, then let's cut more funding from the agencies that are supposed to help them, and then let's make sure only the "right" people get to reproduce!

That just doesn't sound like America. You can't tell people they cannot have children. You just can't, end of story.

Eeehh, WHAT?? WtF? Guidelines on procreation? And you have to be married??? Why does a piece of paper where you declare openly and officially that you sleep with each other has anything to do with biology and evolution (or as it happened in the case of the people who invented this bill: the degeneration of the human brain)? Doesn't the government have anything else to do? You got no other problems in Indiana? No poverty? Everybody is happy with the tax system, the safety on the streets, no crime? Nothing? There really is nothing to occupy their petty little minds or their time with something important?
p.s. I did not want to offend anybody who is married - I just don't think, the state or any other organization is supposed to have something to say in this matter - only the two people involved - whatever their gender might be - should be allowed to have a say in this.

Religion and Church activities go together how exactly??? There are a lot of ppl who have faith but don't go to church. And - WTF - does religion have to do with biology anyway? I believe in evolution and for that matter, the human (in some form) has been around for about 2 Mio years. It never needed faith to raise kids. And if you are Christian: read the bible, esp. the part where it's taken from the Torah (jewish). The new year has just started. According to the Bible the World was made 5766 years ago - the human 5766 minus 4 days now. The idea of marriage was only formed about 4000 years ago ... Not to mention, that Christianity only exists less than 2000 years.

I must admit, I'm following news like this (including all the gay arguments) with a kind of surprised and unbelieving amusement. Living in the "capital" of gay people in Europe with our main major being gay (it's a city with 4 mio inhabitants) it's hard to see you guys struggle. I'm so sorry for you! And angry at the people not letting you guys live your life as you want it. Going to post this to elke_tanzer as well - that's how annoyed I am ... :(

It's really hard for me as a Finnish person to understand that laws can be so different depending on which state you happen to live in, yet it's all happening within the boundaries of a single nation. Of course, knowing how the conservatives in your country can be, I guess it's a good thing that there is some variety... :P

I really don't understand why people make it their business, I grew up in a country where the separation of church and government did not exist and it was a nightmare. When I came here, I was happy to see that religion being great and all was a personal choice. Now, I realized that it seems like you have to fit in some type of profile in order to be "approved" for something as personal as reproduction! gimme a break!!!
What is next? having to have your house inspected before you bring your own child home from the hospital, to see if it meets their expectations?
Please! I just can't fucking believe it.

was talking about it last night with a friend - who writes on eugenics and state controlled reproduction - and well, the whole Handmaid's Tale implications were pretty disgusting/unbelievable (but then that totalitarian state was the US too, haha - o boy... gallows humor). Yes, the biggest concern of this country seems to be identified as single women going out and having tons of babies and going on welfare and draining resources, is it? o geeze...

but it seemed aimed against same sex couples and around that whole sanctity of "marriage bill" brouhaha - and 'artificial insemination.' Freda was mentioning the case of successful a ex utero term - and if women can have babies without a vagina, well, hey hey, now, men can too.

Oh dear.

Yes, the US Government owns your bodies, ladies... Next up, they'll be telling you what KIND of babies to have.

not to get too flip when people are pissed - but I read StG, the double chapter this morning, and thank you thank you, I had to go read all of LMH again on that momentum, and up to chapter 20 all in one morning. Good thing it's Fall break soon.

I'm not at all surprised. Where I come from, you have to jump hoops to be allowed to even be considered as adoptive parents, right down to filling out a 'journal' for a period of 6 months with your partner, lots of counselling sessions and a final assessment - all by a person who isn't a parent.

It hasn't quite reached the IVF program as yet here in OZ, but the whole thing doesn't surprise me at all... But in Australia, my tax dollars already fund a considerable portion of the IVF program, and I honestly do begrudge having to pay for couples who have multiple unsuccessful attempts at it. I think the Govt has reduced the number of cycles it will fund under Medicare, but seeing all this doesn't surprise me one iota.
