Tomorrow morning I'm going to San Antonio to support [livejournal.com profile] jedirita when she speaks at a press conference in opposition to Texas's proposed "Marriage Protection" amendment. (Check out her speech here.) I'm going to make posters tonight, but I'm having trouble coming up with stuff to put on them. I'm planning to make two, and these are my ideas so far:

Marriage makes families stronger

Support and protect ALL families

But I could do better, I'm sure. Any ideas? I want to keep the tone positive, and I want to be sure to frame what I say in a way that reclaims the concept of "family" as one of inclusion, rather than the narrow and hateful definition the other side uses.

Oh, and if you're within driving distance of San Antonio and would like more information, drop me a comment here. :-)

Well, there's always the hoary old "Hate is not a family value" slogan.

Yay and good for you!

There's always Laura's standby, "My marriage doesn't need protection" though I don't know if that doesn't sound combative.

Be wary of the weirdo alleged 'christian' types; back away slowly and remember they can smell fear.

Tahnks for thinking of me! But yeah, it's probably too combative. You want a poster that's designed to include the people around you; my icon is telling folks around me to STFU. :D

How about "Families are love, not sex" with 'sex' referring to gender, of course. Though that might go over the heads of many of the people present. *amused*

That is so awesome.
What a great speech, it is so well put together.
I like those two ideas you have for the signs.
Hmm,
Maybe something to do with children like...
"Children don't care about a 'traditional family' they just want a family"
Bah, nevermind...it sounded better in my head.

First of all, right on, and good luck to everyone taking such an important stand. Your ideas work well ... all I can think of is "FAMILY means LOVE." Cheesey, but brings the point home, methinks.

I wish I had a good suggestion. I rather like the "My marriage doesn't need protecting" suggestion above.

Good luck tomorrow. Fight the power!

You could always use the classic "Marriage Is Love"? ;)

Something like "Love Makes a Family" I first heard it through the Family Diversity Project. (http://www.lovemakesafamily.org/) Its a great slogan and covers many bases.

Ooh, that one is good! Short, sweet, and to the point. I vote for that one!

Neutral enough to not be combative. Good luck with your speech tomorrow.

well from a constitutional stand point there is always the "protect our pursuit of happiness" or "Limiting love is limiting our freedom."

Those are just some off the top of my head.

i send my love and support to you. Good Luck!!

"Families Matter" is one of the slogans of the campaign to defeat the amendment, so that's a good one, too.

Marriage is about Love - not Gender

We're all one big happy family

Family, it's a state of the heart

Marriage - the glue that helps ALL families stick together

Ah... my brain is mush, but I thought I'd chuck in some ideas anyway. Hope it goes well!

I think the ones you have sound wonderful and they are positive slogans that make sense, and are to the point.

Others I've seen:

Hate is not a family value
Love is never wrong
Love makes a family

Good luck tomorrow, and thanks again for always standing up for what you believe.

This is making me feel like such a complete dork, but all this family schtick is making that dogawful Barney song go through my head.

Oh a family is people and a family is love,
That's a family!
They come in all different sizes and different kinds,
But mine's just right for me, yeah, mine's just right for me!

If fucking Barney can get it, you'd think the Lege could find a clue somewhere.

coolness..

Watch your local news tonight, and maybe you get to see a clip of Rita's speech! I was the only one with a sign and all the cameras came over and took shots of it, so look for me too! :-)
