In case you don't have access to US News and World Report, here is a link to last week's article about the impact of the Harry Potter books on kids. It cites a lot of anecdotal evidence about how reading the HP books has positively impacted the reading skills of many children. There are also a couple of mentions of teachers using fan fiction as a tool to help build kids' writing skills, which I found interesting. (Back in my day, we had to write fan fiction on our own time!)

You know you have a dirty mind when you read a sentence like this:

"Although the Harry books grow more complex with each installment, the series structure gives kids a basis of knowledge to work from--like what Hogwarts is all about and that Draco Malfoy kind of sucks."

...and your thoughts go off on another tangent entirely... Heh. ;-)

Oh and boy how well Draco Malfoy kind of sucks!!!!

(excuse my icon...you'll have to imagine, Draco re-paying Harry's kindness afterwards---don't have a 'Malfoy sucks icon'--what's that? Photoshop calling?)

Don't suppose you'd like to make me a "Draco sucks" icon, would you? :-P

I used some random pic. I lightened the 'suckers' hair. It looks a bit cheesy, hence the reason that it's a one second view.

Take 'em, share 'em, delete 'em...whatever.

Speaking of interesting topics in this particular magazine:

This recent HP article has a quote from LJ's very own [livejournal.com profile] wintermoon3 (next to the last paragraph - Ms. Ryan)

If anyone is making "Draco sucks" buttons, I'll take one! heh ;D

My whole mind is dipped in filth anyway. How about Greyback's remark about "eating children" *slaps forehead* Away PWP demons, away!

I have this theory, that Greyback is the Wizarding World's version of a pedophile. And you should write that fic. *nudge nudge*

Hmmm...how about Greyback/Neville? They don't come any more innocent than Neville waving his cherry wood wand around. XD

Would wand-play be involved?

Neville/Greyback would work. You could probably make it work.

Well wand play of a sort. Heh.

We did that in my senior English class. I spent the first semester writing almost nothing but H/D slash and kept getting comments like "Excellent!" and "Give more detail." I always new that woman was a closet pervert.

I had my college developmental writing students edit fanfiction last year, but I'm planning to have them write some this fall semester - and I am known for using Harry Potter in my syllabus!

Nice interpretable sentence indeed!! *g*

I've been offer a job as an English teacher and if I ever get to teach, I was sorta planning to use HP books as teaching material as well *lol* That'd be fun ;)

oh you should! I use it in my classes, and even have info on my website about it www.mtsu.edu/~ckr2c

I'd love to add links to whatever you do, and hear from you if you get any ideas from my site... I'm really hoping it can let teachers and administration know how useful "pop culture" can be.

Whoa! Sounds like a fantastic plan!

I'm still not sure if I get the job but I'd love to keep in touch with you just in case I do! Thank you for contacting me! I really treasure this sort of information that I'll be needing! I'll definitely take a look at your site :)

I still don't have a homepage of my own, but am planning on making one. As of now, I only have fandom LJ *lol* But look what it got me ;) Fandom definitely rocks! *hugs*

I had an English teacher assign what was essentially fanfic writing to us in 1980 - 9th grade, Julius Caesar. The problem was that we didn't get to pick the topic - boys got to write what Cassius was thinking during the murder, girls had to write what Caesar's wife was thinking. During the murder. Despite the fact that she wasn't even there.

Heh, indeed.
I'm now picturing Harry and Draco hiding in a safehouse somewhere, fooling around.
Draco licks Harry's cock halfheartedly.
A frustrated Harry yells "Hey! What do you call that?"
"Didn't you read? I only 'kind of suck.'"
