But... why does the HP fandom insist on having competition between ships? Why can't we all just read whatever the hell pairings we want? I don't think I'll ever understand.

It was supposed to be a joke, I'm pretty sure! A tongue in cheek post after watching all the het shippers tearing each other's hair out for the last month.

But yes, the comic cracked me up :) We aren't remotely canon which is why I think we came out of HBP looking the prettiest *does a pretty twirl*- everyone else was pulling their hair out and all I remember from HDers was..."omg Draco!"

Yeah, and that's just insane. Personally, I prefer subtext; why bother with fanfiction if everything you want is in canon?

But then, there was one Remus/Sirius group that temporarily lost its mind--"OMG I can't read R/S anymore because JKR killed it!!!" Luckily, they seemed to regain their sanity reasonably soon. I couldn't figure out why they were all claiming R/S was canon, anyway--there was certainly subtext, but it was never explicitly stated.

People are very, very strange.

True, and that's so much more than any other slash pairing will ever get in this series. JKR isn't stupid, but I really think the subtext was intentionally left ambiguous. ;-)

I've read Harry/Hermione fics that I really enjoyed. But that's completely separate from canon, you know? Most of the pairings I read will never, ever be canon. And it doesn't actually matter, because there's so much to read! The idea that the books are the be-all end-all of HP is ridiculous.
