Drop everything and go read Salvation & Sacrament by [livejournal.com profile] abbycadabra, right now. It's a gorgeous post-Hogwarts H/D, and I PROMISE it will take your breath away. I had the wonderful privilege of betaing this fic, and I gotta tell ya, Abby is fucking amazing.

Go. Read. STG will be here when you get back. Looking much less shiny, I'm sure. But still. GO! What are you waiting for?

I will read, but AUGH! How can YOU, a TRAVELER, have permitted the gross inaccuracies about Africa which she describes in her opening paragraphs? I know, I know: there I go getting distracted by minor details again, but Africa is my favorite continent and sheesh. Other people Britpick; I Africa pick. Or something.

Other than that, though, it's good so far. :P

Don't yell at me! I've only been in southern Africa. What she described was really close to my own experiences in Zimbabwe and Botswana. I can only guess about what northern Arfica looks like.

One more thing -- keep in mind that she's decribing Harry's perception there in that first paragraph. And from the start, we see that Harry has a pretty warped view of the world.

True. Like his totally wacky itinerary. Not to mention his whole "Let's shove obscene amounts of money at random people" mission. Clearly this boy is a few sandwiches short of a picnic.

LOL! I love reading this discussion, almost as much as I love that you still gave the fic a chance, despite the intially closed-off description of Africa. Thanks for that. :)

Well, if Emma recommends it, then I'm going to read it! What a messed-up Harry - and I could *totally* see Canon!Harry ending up like that. Not that JKR would have the guts to do it, but he's definitely got a Messiah complex going on. And the way he's constantly alienating even the people closest too him. He could end up like...like Michael Jackson Eep!

But whatever happened to Draco? I like to think he went back to that cliff and found the wad of money, then bought a beach house just like Harry said, maybe in the Seychelles. And invites Neville to live with him. :P

Let us take a vow right now to never wish that upon another person ever, real or fictional. ;)

As for Draco, I like your idea. But not so much with the Neville, for if he can't have Harry, and Ron's dead, it will always be Blaise for him... Oh, but he was probably already dead, too, what with that death eater business. *ponders* I guess Neville really is the only one. I had, however, entertained the thought of having Draco just end up back at Harry's London flat, waiting for him, unknowing. The tragedy was almost too good to pass up, but somehow I managed...

That's exactly what I was expecting to happen. I don't know if I could have handled it without sniffling like an idiot, though. And theoretically you could always write a little response from Draco's perspective to get your tragedy. ^.~

Sad stories aren't my cup of tea, but this was pretty.

Ah, it was her preliminary description of dividing Africa in half, with one half desert and the other have tropics. That is so NOT Zimbabwe or Botswana, for example. It's not Africa. But...okay, I'm calming down now.

It *was* a good story. But I really wish someone had smacked Harry for his condescension in handing out all that money. But then, I guess Draco *did* smack him. Go Draco! And then Harry dies in Peru. Sad ending! Yay!

But that was the whole point -- no one could. Harry is the Hero, and he does good automatically, in his own mind. Remus sort of waved his hands at it, but Harry just had this uber-British colonial attitude about the whole thing. He thought *he* could tell who was deserving and who wasn't, and he thought he was really helping people. The only person who told him he was wrong was Draco, and Harry didn't believe him until it was too late.

I just love the way Harry is so very flawed in this fic, and how Draco is the only person who sees it, the only person who could help Harry understand how to be happy. And Harry pushes him away. the angst!!!

Oh I know, and it is an all-too logical trajectory of canon!Harry. *shudders* Not to mention the fact that I've known people who thought they were virtuous for shoving money at poor people. It's going to be really interesting to see how JKR deals with Harry in the next book. Actually, in this story Harry's not too different from Anakin - "I'm going to save people from dying!" Good intentions can still lead to the Dark Side, young man.

I marked it in MY FAVORITES first. 0___0 I don't think I'm alert enough to read it right now...[12 am here] Though the STG did perk me up *ROFL*.

Based on the comments and what I've browsed so far [couldn't help myself] --- I think I will definitely be weepy at the least. Pensive too because my country has its own share of social and political maelstroms. [waves AngstAddict flag] Tomorrow will be something to look forward to [as always :D]

Thank you so much for your recs! I might have been stuck recycling fics [quite enjoyable actually] if you and your team weren't so patient enough to point us in the direction of works such as these. <3
