If you live in Texas, you probably know that TWO so-called "Defense of Marriage" ammendments have been proposed for our state constitution. Texas is a conservative state, so imagine the impact of these amendments NOT being passed here! Wouldn't you love to see that?

If you go here you can read the amendments and get contact information for your state representatives so that you can ask them to oppose the ammendments. If the state legislature doesn't act, they're likely to go on the ballot in November -- and we only have to look at blue states like Oregon to see what the likely result will be.

We have to fight this, y'all! (And feel free to pass the word on.)

Ugh. I've just recently escaped Texas myself; my hometown is Houston and I've only relocated in the last two months from it. Louisiana was the first to pass an anti-gay marriage act, and I find it rather disgusting and somewhat surprising that absolutely none of us have learned a damn thing from our own history.

I, fortunately, have. All I have to do is look at my generation and see how accepted homosexuality is to know all I have to do is outlive the outdated farts passing the laws to see my rights come to fruition. ;p

It's pretty sad that sometimes we have to wait for enough people to die before things change. And in the meantime, they continue to warp the minds of their children and grandchildren.

The obvious comparison here is racism. Although you'd have to be an idiot not to admit that racism is still abound, it's now fortunately within the minority and actually frowned upon by the majority. While some young minds will be warped by the prejuduces of their parents, not all will. Gradually, I hope the disease of homophobia will be swept to the back of the room much like racism now is. Not invisible, unfortunately, but at the very least not in the forefront of the minds of those who control our law-making policies.

And now I sound like an idealistic twat. *laughs* Ah well. I'm in college; I guess I get to. ;)

Good luck! I'll be cheering for ya! It's so refreshing knowing that other people get as outraged as I do...

I hadn't realized you're in Texas too. Travis County is the only one in the state that acknowledges formal commitments of the homosexual variety.
"
Rickoff and Bexar County District Attorney Susan Reed asked Cornyn
whether the county had an obligation to serve as a repository for
sworn statements "that the two individuals share in each other's lives
in a committed relationship and that they agree to be jointly
responsible for each other's financial responsibilities."

For several years, agreements to that effect have been filed in Travis
County – apparently the only Texas county that has accepted them. Many
of the filers were Austin city employees, who sought to legally record
the instruments in order to secure health insurance benefits for their
gay or lesbian partners.

The Travis County clerk was unavailable for comment Friday. Subordinates declined comment and could not verify how many of the
affidavits are on file.

I used to live in Bexar County, when I was a student at UTSA. ;) Isn't that where the Lawrence v. Texas case "crime" was actually committed? That might have something to do with Travis County's leniancy.

I do. Need me to storm the capitol? Actually, one night a friend and I headed to the capitol building and took some rather naughty pictures ;) I blame her.
