Let's hear it for those "activist judges"! :-D

Same-Sex Couples Must Be Allowed To Marry In New York, Court Rules

Excerpt: In a 62-page decision issued this morning in New York City, State Supreme Court Justice Doris Ling-Cohan said that the New York State Constitution guarantees basic freedoms to lesbian and gay people – and that those rights are violated when same-sex couples are not allowed to marry. The ruling said the state Constitution requires same-sex couples to have equal access to marriage, and that the couples represented by Lambda Legal must be given marriage licenses.

ETA: And on the stupidity front, yet another battle is brewing.

Conflicts over curriculum intensify: Liberals, conservatives go to court as materials or activities in schools fail to meet their expectations.

Excerpt: Meanwhile, in Georgia's Cobb County, a campaign by parents convinced the school board to require a warning sticker on biology textbooks stating that "evolution is a theory, not a fact" and imploring students to consider the books' contents "with an open mind." The ACLU sued, and a court ordered the stickers removed. Ken Miller, who co-authored the biology textbook used in Cobb County, called the sticker a failed attempt at compromise. The sticker, he said, "is factually incorrect, it is scientifically misleading and it is very poor educational policy."

Woo-hoo! Let's just hope that the 30-day waiting period passes without an appeal by the city/state (cannot remember which).

The sad thing is that I live near Cobb county, that's what you get when you live in the Bible Belt here in the south. *sighs*

On a related note, I wrote a draft of an essay in defense of "tolerance" today, in reference to the SpongeBob and PBS thing. They want to take the "public" out of our public schools and public TV!!!! I also really want to write something about the administration's advocacy of torture and violation of basic human rights and the Geneva convention, but I'm still too upset about it to come up with anything coherent.

I checked out the AI site, but they didn't have much on the torture issue. ACLU talked about what they're doing, but I'd really like to find some kind of movement that takes this up, especially with the second anniversary of the war coming up. There is a meeting in SA tonight, where I'm planning to bring this up.

Sorry to be rambling... But hey, you should check out the ACLU's page on gay rights. Outlines their strategy. Worth looking at.

I grew up in Cobb County (graduated five years ago), and I don't ever remember it being a big deal. The teaching curriculum seemed rather liberal at the time, although I'm not sure if I wouldn't think so now. Also, my parents weren't really involved in such things, as they actually have open minds and aren't blinded by religion.

Bloody hell! You know, if they want stickers that say evolution is a just a theory on all their textbooks, that's fine by me!

I'm all for that!

As long as they put that same sticker on the bible.

On count one--:DDDD

I wish I had happy news as well. Unfortunately, I was listening to my NPR station, and a buisness in my state, they've been offering same-sex couples benifits, and offering the constitutional amendment (which still makes me want to be ill when I think that it passed in my state) a general screw-you. So, some homophobes bigots idiots homophobic bigoted idiots are sueing them, coz, y'know, giving those icky sinners benifits and whatever? So not on! *sigh* People just--I just don't understand them sometimes.
