Is God punishing Florida for the 2000 election?
(Note: This is a joke, people! It probably isn't even remotely accurate. Apologies in advance if any Floridians are offended.)

ACLU Ad on Patriot Act Plays Fast & Loose With Facts

Airlines Ordered to Turn Over Passenger Data -- "There are many people who are still going to find themselves in no-fly hell"
(Personal note: *I* am on the no-fly list, actually. Whenever I fly, the counter agent has to call TSA so they can "approve" me getting on the plane or not. Luckily, I haven't been denied boarding -- yet. I have no idea how I got on that list, nor how to get off. Think it can't happen to you too? Heh.)

So what exactly did Cat Stevens do, anyway?

Put Away Your Hankies...a message from Michael Moore

The Pentagon doesn't want you to vote overseas

Thanks for the Michael Moore link - it cheered me up a bit. I've been worried.

No-fly list? What list is this? I didn't know that it existed! All I know is that almost everytime I fly, instead of merrily going through security, I have to get the complete check. Open bags and all. Bah.

someone in trollprincess's last post mentioned that the-artist-formerly-known-as-cat-stevens regularly gave money to hamas and also publicly said salman rushdie should be killed.

Airline security is one of the reasons (other than lack of money, that is) I hesitate coming over to the US. I'm not that sure all the information gathered is necessary and it also worries me who it is passed to. The airline security, of course, but I've understood it can be given to a third party and hello, but this IS my privacy being sold around. Though I have no idea if I'd end up on the list (the criteria seems vague), I'd rather be grounded here than thousands of kilometres away.

Wow. You're the first other person I know who's on the no-fly list and has to get verbal permission to be cleared to go on planes. I also occasionally get extra-searching and have to have long and philosophical conversations with TSA agents and local law enforcement about my current and former travel plans before I'm allowed to get on a plane and eat bad peanuts in hope of actually going somewhere.

At least I *know* what I did to get so much loving attention. I wonder if in your case it has to do with ahving the same name as a porn star?

Thanks. I needed that Michael Moore statement.

(I do whine a lot. I know. Comes with being the youngest of three girls.)

I think it's that I have the same name as someone who did something. Every time I check in for a flight, the counter agent has to call TSA and have a long chat on the phone with someone before I get cleared. I get extra attention when I go through security, too. Last week I had to get into a "sniffing" machine, and that was one of the weirdest experiences I've ever had! :-P

In regards to this particular article The Pentagon doesn't want you to vote overseas the information is slightly off. The DoD, I believe, is responsible for registering soldiers and probably American civilians it employs overseas. The State Department, in the form of Embassies and consulates, is responsible for getting information on how to register to vote out to the Americans that are working in their country.

Go or call the American Embassy or Consulate, ask for the Consular section and then ask them how to do it. They have the forms you need to register to vote and they also have the Federal Write in Ballots if your ballot doesn't make it in time. (A much more realistic problem than not getting access to the site)
